Easy as pie?

Question Posted Friday March 11 2005, 7:42 pm

I want to make a pie for my friends on pi day, because it's funny and dorky and this monday (3/14!) but I've never made a pie before. What's the easiest pie to make?

PUMKIN PIE

Ingredients:
1/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
2 or 3 eggs
1 1/2 c. evaporated milk
2 c. pumpkin puree

Steps:
1. Put an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F.

2. Put eggs into a food processor or large mixing bowl and whisk well.

3. Add pumpkin, evaporated milk, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and salt, and mix. Set aside.

4. Warm the pie crust in the oven until it is hot to the touch.

5. Pour the pumpkin filling into the warmed pie crust and bake about 35 to 40 minutes, or until filling is set but still a bit quivery, like gelatin, when lightly nudged.

6. Cool pie on a rack and refrigerate. Serve either cold, at room temperature or slightly warmed.

Warnings:
If the pie cooks too much, it may crack.

Pumpkin pies do not freeze well.

Pumpkin pie is best served within a day of baking, because the crust will begin to soften after baking.

The crust is the hardest part of making pie.

So, I'd reccomend making a pie with a no-bake crust. You can buy pre-made graham cracker crusts at the grocery store.

Then fill it with some sort of pudding or fruity jello filling. I think you'd be able to find some easy recipes online from either Jello, Cool-whip, or Phillidelphia cream cheese.

The two easiest kinds of pie are pudding pies and berry pies. Unless you're good with making other pastries, don't try to make a crust. Get one at the store. For berry pies, get a plain crust, if your going to make a pudding pie, try a graham cracker crust (or chocolate graham cracker crust - yum!).

The instructions below for pudding pie looked ok. Remember to follow the boxes directions for pie filling - it's less milk than for pudding.

For a berry pie, you pretty much get a can of cherry, blueberry, or whatever pie filling and dump it in the crust before putting it in the oven. There are instructions on the side of the can usually. The pie crust will tell you how long to cook the crust for. For strawberry pie, you buy fresh strawberries, cut them up, and mix them into purchased strawberry glaze.

Apple pie is considered difficult. Pumpkin pie isn't difficult, but it's more work.

Pudding pie is extremely easy. By a whole bunch of pudding cups and a pie crust thats pre made { the pie crust pre made the pudding is already in the cups} put the pudding in the crust and make it smooth on top then get whip cream and put it all on top of the pie put it in the fridge with a plastic cover for like an hour and thats it!

Moop answered Friday March 11 2005, 8:22 pm:
I think to think that all pies are equal in terms of difficulty (ensuring that only basic crusts are used). If you want one of those neat pies with the criss-crossed tops it's probably harder to make, but I would make a regular pie (of any flavor) and cut the symbol for pi in the upper crust.
