Question Posted Sunday March 6 2005, 12:54 am

Bad posture runs in my family. My mom's shoulder is one higher than the other, and she constantly slouches. Ive noticed over the past year, i have been becoming the same way. I cant even stand up or sit up straight because it hurts. My shoulders are slouched, and ive already gone to the doctor to get it checked out. They said i dont have scoliosis (spelled it wrong), but how am i supposed to improve my posture if it hurts?

Yoga is good, also special shoes.

Sketchers Shape Ups. They're costly, but worth it. My wife spends 8 hours a day standing on hard tile floors, both posture and general back pain from standing on hard surfaces were a problem.

She comes home, and she isn't in pain anymore. These shoes, at least for posture and back pain, work absolutely wonderfully apparently. The review and my wife agree. Give them a look.

It takes core muscles to sit up straight and repeated slouching is making those muscles weaker because you aren't using them. It hurts because by sitting up straight you are forcing your back and abdomin muscles to work when you aren't using them often. It's strenuous. It would be like someone who has never done running in their life trying to run a 13 mile marathon without training. The last answer is correct. Yoga. Yoga helps strengthen your back and core muscles. You can also begin doing core exercises on your own. Once you begin to strengthen those muscles it will not hurt to sit up straight. It takes practice and a lot of reminder.

I've had the same problem for years. When I first went to the doctor I was sent for a dexus scan which revealed a condition called osteo pinea...basically low calcium levels in my bones. However I have found that my posture has improved immensely through practicing yoga as it eases any pain I have had from slouching and relaxes my muscles (esp those around the spine and neck). I wouldn't worry too much with regard to diagnoses etc. as long as you find something practical which helps. In conclusion I would highly reccommend the yoga for posture and general well being. After a few sessions you won't notice the pain.

More than likely your body is use to slouching, and you can make it to where you dont slouch as much by forcing your self to sit up straight, It prolly does hurt but you'll just have to make your self do it, if you want to have good posture.

I have a bad back. In 10th grade, I was taken out of school for a year because I could not sit for more than 15 minutes. I went to a lot of doctors and they never diagnosed me or anything. Doctors these days are just a laugh. My best advice would have to be not to push it too hard don't try correcting your posture soo much that it ends up hurting something else and don't out too much restraint on your back. I was once put in a back brace because of a doctor and ended up my back was swelling and couldn't because of the brace. Just try to do a little each day but definately don't over do it because it's herdity and there's not much you can do with that. Try doing some athletic things..my sister got out of having a bad back like all of us by doing sports. Good luck!

well if you want to have good posture that bad you might have to deal with the pain...ever hear the saying "beauty is pain" every day when you come home from school put a book on top of your head and walk around with it on there for a couple minutes each day. thats all i could think of...

You can try Physical Therapy. If your parents will pay for it. Other than that, I'm not sure what else you could do.

Shortie answered Sunday March 6 2005, 10:57 am:
dear bad posture,
maybe you should try another doctor? either that try a chyropractor. they can help a lot! but think about it, why do you want good posture? do people make fun of you? or do you jsut want to be like everyone else. just think of it this way, we are humans, and humans are not perfect, they crack their knuckles, they eat way too much junk food, and in your case, you have bad posture. its not your fault and it doesn't always have to be a bad thing.

This is common, everyday work for a Chiropractor. They specialize in reducing & relieving back pain. If you're wanting to get your problems fixed, don't go to your normal doctor. Go see a bone & joint specialist.

I think eventually it there won't be any pain. Just keep on trying to get good posture. Maybe you have knots in your back or something. Go to one of those back doctors (it starts with a C) and have them look at your back.

♥ Always,
Maria
