i used to be good at basketball until certain circumstances in my life forced me to give it up for a long period of time.
i'm in love with it again; but unfortunately i am badly out of practice. still decent, but not great.
is it possible (please look at the age*) for me to improve, and regain my old skill? obviously i am going to practice- but will simply practicing do it?
i understand that this is all very general, but please just tell me what you know.
also, any general tips on how to get better at basketball (exercises, etc) would be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Here is a drill that can help. Lay ups will help but also you dribble the ball up (your drive-way or a court) with w-e hand and then you dribble back down with the opposite hand.. that really helps for you to become a better ball handler... if you have any more questions about basketball juss ask me b/c i play on a team! or any questions just ask!!
Good luck~ (remember practice makes perfect!)
Little_Miss_Cant_Be_Wrong answered Monday March 7 2005, 10:29 pm: Of course you can be great at basketball again! Where there is a will, there is a way! You are certainly young enough to get right back where you left off, and to improve immensely from there. I don't know specifics about basketball technique training, but to excel in any sport, you need to be in great shape. In addition to practicing dribbling and shooting, work out on a consistent basis. Arms, abs, legs, back...they are all important. Also work in some cardio excercise and build up some good stamina. Do you have friends that play basketball well? Ask them to practice with you, it is always more motivating to work with someone, and it will help inspire you to be the best you can be. Don't give up, you need to truly believe you can do it. Half the battle is confidence in yourself. I was having some trouble a while ago wondering if I was doing the right thing as an athlete, and I had no confidence that I could do it, and was having trouble keeping focused. I read a great book and it put it all into perspective. I really believe that as an athlete, the mental aspect of your training is extremely important. I would highly reccommend this book... it's called 'In Pursuit of Excellence' and it is written by Terry Orlick. Honestly, it will make a difference. Try it.
As for improving your basketball technique, I wish I could be of more help in that department. But if you've done it before, you can do it again. Maybe ask some of the guys on your school's basketball team if they would mind helping you out. Or, go watch some of their practices and see what kind of drills and excercises they do, and learn from that. Hope that helped a little bit, good luck! *ashlee* answered Friday March 4 2005, 8:55 pm: i just want to quote you on "is it possible (please look at the age*) for me to improve, and regain my old skill?" then you said that your 16. I REPEAT 16. its not like youre 80. you can do anything you want right now. im sorry but i cant believe you asked that question, its almost like you think that once youve tried something, that unless you stick with it youll never be able to do it again because youll grow incapable from age. i hope that i interpreted your question very wrong. Ditzzy answered Friday March 4 2005, 8:42 pm: of coarse!!!you can still get be the greatest, its almost the same of what im doing.
But to help you with your shots you should stand about a foot away from the hoop (any angle)and shoot untill you get at least 2 in , then move another foot away and do the same(2 shots), keep doing this untill u get as far from the hoop as you want to be.
oh and also try to run a little bit before you start practicing so u get your heart pumping and during your practice it would be easy for you to move around... ahh i think i typed too much , but i hope i helped [ Ditzzy's advice column | Ask Ditzzy A Question ]
CraziForRey619 answered Friday March 4 2005, 8:17 pm: I think you should keep practicing by yourself. Try different techiniques you use to be good at, but aren't so good at now, and work on them until you get to where you want to be. There really isn't a quick way to get great at something, unless you try hard. Besta Luck [ CraziForRey619's advice column | Ask CraziForRey619 A Question ]
