Question Posted Thursday February 17 2005, 3:52 pm

I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to post these type of questions on this site... but... what they heck...this is actually an english-y type question... you see, I was just wondering... there's this quote that I heard and liked the sound of, but I dont really understand it... maybe some adults in here (or some really smart teens) could explain it to me please... *batts eyelashes*?? anyway, the quote is... "All is fair in love and war" please answer... i know this is a boring question; i rate high!!!

I could give my interpretation, but people have already done that. So I'll give you the expert's interpretation, based on its origin and its use in popular culture.

ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR -- "The rules of fair play do not apply in love and war. The proverb has been traced back to John Lyly's 'Euphues' (1578). First attested in the United States in 'Horse-Shoe Robinson' (1835). The proverb is found in varying forms. The proverb is frequently used to justify cheating." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman ( Random House, N.Y., 1996).

hey! Well I heard this quote so many times "All is fair in love and war"...my teacher said something like that to us. I'm in advanced english, really no difference! But what I think the quote is trying to tell us, is that love and war is similar in some ways. but also different. Love, you get hurt(physically, and mentally), gain respect, self-esteem...so much more, and in war, you get hurt(mentally, and mostly physically), you gain respect and pride(depends if it is for the right reasons). You win some and you also lose some. In either ways you get something out of it. the outcome of the situation can be a positive or a negative outcome. But mostly you learn how to deal with it. so it's fair! This is just my opinion on this quote. but if you really do know what it is, then please tell, like what do u think it is in your own word? best wishes on finding the meaning. but it's deep down, there's really no right answer, it's just what you feel or think. Hope i helped, take care!

it means exactly what it says all is fair in love in war which is basicall saying anything goes hence the all is fair so in love you can do whatever you want to try and get someone and the same thing the only diffrence is in war it would be killing someone and love it would be getting them hope i helped

One interpretation is that you can't cheat in a war and you can't cheat in love (i.e. you can't hit your opponent when their back is turned/you can't be a 'player').
Hope that helped!!

that is a quote if thats wat ur wondering..but i think you're asking what it means..basically i thin it means that everything goes no matter if you are in love oer if you are in a war fighting with someone. there are no boundaries or rules, everything goes.
