Ha
1.count things.(although this could start a disorder if you do it to much, happened to me)
2.look around, find random words you see and put them in alphebetical order ( this also improves your memory)
3.talk to the people your ringing up, ask them how their life is going, OR find something in the news thats debatable, and ask them their oppinion on it, thats always fun
4.change your accent evertime a new customer comes up
5.talk to other workers
6.play the alphabet game with food products around you. [ Melaur1001's advice column | Ask Melaur1001 A Question ]
BeautifulMadness answered Tuesday February 8 2005, 2:34 pm: Hmm...that's a hard one!
I guess you could listen to music with one earphone in? Or if you are in to excersizing or whatever you could tap and stretch your legs under the desk. You could make cheesy comments to as many people as you can and see who laughs? Or make a big mark on your face (if you're really desperate) and see if anyone points it out? You could read magazines under the desk or keep a pen and paper to hand and doodle, write messages to your friends, or write shopping lists for you to buy stuff when you get out of work (i.e. the bets item from everyone's shopping so you can go out and buy all the yummy stuff :P). If you prefer having lots of customers, then scan stuff quickly and people will get to know you do that and more will come to you and you will see and talk to more customers in a day. If you like having less customers, then be slow about it. If someone takes a long time to pack and you have scanned everything, you could help them pack...?
Are your till screen things computers? Or just tills? If they're computers then you could surf the net or chat to other friends at work.
Hope that helped a little!
Blessed Be,

chaos answered Tuesday February 8 2005, 1:49 pm: Things I used to do while being a cashier:
Straightening up/fronting your aisle.
Familiarizing yourself with what is on sale/coupons to help the customer get the best deal.
You have a phone? You could do the "Attention K-mart Shoppers" thing on what is on sale. My bosses used to dig that.
Racing myself to see how long it took me to clear the line.
Asking if I can put back the returns. This usually meant it didn't take as long to go home if I worked in the evening.
Asking the manager if there is anything I can help with. Eventually I got to do some write offs and stocking.
Do the best job you can so that maybe you won't have to be a cashier forever. If you like to stay busy, find a job that helps you do that. Interview for any new openings you are interested in. The easiest way to get a new job is to have a job. [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]
rainbowcherrie answered Tuesday February 8 2005, 12:52 pm: Okay well when I'm sitting through a boring tutor period or something I do the following things:
Listen to music on my mp3 player or walkman or the radio, finish any homework or work I have to do, draw, read and text or call people.
This might sound slightly strange but why not start a little sewing project and sew something. You could do embroidery, you can buy kits fairly cheaply and they are usually quite easy to do.
Use your imagination and be creative, maybe you could get a friend to come in for half an hour or so to chat to you for a while? I hope at least one of those ideas was of any use to you. [ rainbowcherrie's advice column | Ask rainbowcherrie A Question ]
