Dinner

Question Posted Monday January 24 2005, 9:36 pm

I'm not a sloppy eater- it's just I drop stuff a lot. I have this dinner at our country club and it's very formal. I'm wearing this pretty dress along with all the other girls going and the guys wear suits and stuff. So, is there any way that I can try to eat neatly so I won't get junk all over my dress or embaress myself?

Aww, I am sorry. This must be a tough thing to deal with. Well hopefully these tips will help you out.

1. Sit Close To the Table - Sit as close to the table as comfortably possible so to avoid dropping food on your lap.

2. Put Your Napkin In Your Lap - Spread it out over your lap so that it covers as much of your lap as possible so just incase you drop any food in it.

3. Make Sure You Cut Up Your Food Well And Make Sure Your Food Is On Your Utensil - Eating smaller bites will help reduce the chance that the food will fall off the utensil.

4. Hold Your Head Over Your Plate - Make sure that your head is close enough over the plate that if it falls it will land on your plate and not on you.

5. Concentrate On What Your Doing - Don't talk, laugh or wave around your arms/hands when your eating or else you will lose concentration and then you will have a problem. If you want to talk or something then put down your utensil and then talk or do whatever.

Good luck! Practice makes perfect, try it at home in private before you go out in public so you can perfect your dining technique.

I have this problem a lot too!

Here are some pointers:
1) Take small bites. Cut your food well, and take it a little at a time.
2) Make sure your food is securely on your fork before you put it in your mouth.
3) Concentrate on getting the food to your mouth when you take a bite. Don't try and take one when you're laughing or trying to say something.
4) Try sitting close to your table to minimize the gap between your plate and your mouth.
5) If you can, choose a food that isn't messy. (some no-no's: lobster, spaghetti, etc.)

Try all these things, and if you still drop something, don't worry. It's not the end of the world. Just laugh at your clumsiness. When you laugh at yourself, you put everyone at ease and show that you are confident and not upright about a little mess.

Enjoy your night out!

HAHA....me too!!! LOL! Or atleast I used to...all I gotta say is eat very slowly..and sit closer to the table with a napkin in your lap. Plus eating slower causes you to fuller easier so you don't eat as much!

Maybe load less food onto you silverwear, or basically take smaller bites. Um... Practice at home, eating formal i mean. Hopfully you get the hang of it alittle more. Just dont worry because that will make it worse. Good Luck and hope everything goes good!

Bibs? lol no that's not good. Well, a lot of formal people wear napkins on their laps. If something falls down, just brush it off!!! Good Luck!

PS: I'm drop stuff too!!

haha i am a pretty sloppy eater too! what you should do is eat slower, because like me, i eat very fast and that causes food to go all over the place! lol try to get closer to the table and your plate too, and when you take bites, take them above your plate to avoid food getting on your clothes. remember, don't rush! take your time when it comes to eating!

put a napkin on your lap, that way it looks like you have good manners and your dress won't get ruined. The best way to avoid dropping stuff on yourself is to not put too much on your fork or spoon at one time. That way if it does spill, minimal damage is done.
