Reading

Question Posted Thursday December 30 2004, 12:51 am

I hate reading. We have to accumulate so many points per quarter.Like we read a book then we take a test on it and you get points for the book depending on how many questions you got right on the test. But i hate reading. I don't like any kind of books and i think ive already read all the books in the library! Maybe not..but still..i hate reading! Does any one have any tips on how to like reading? Or any good books to suggest? and our quarter 2 cut-off date is jan 7th..i have no points!! i need to get 13..any tips on how to get my reading done?

If you hate reading, if that's your assignment, you gotta do your assignment. You don't have to read like the whole book in one day! Break it into sections to how many pages you're gonna read per day, or pretend that all the characters in the book are a bunch of comics and use your imagination as you read instead of being ms boring. Ask you librarian if you have a short version of the book that you're reading and as you read, put your shoes into that certain character's sitiuation and think how would you react. If you hate reading, then make reading fun!

Zoinatrobe answered Thursday December 30 2004, 2:31 pm:
Hi,
To try and like reading more, use your imagination to picture the setting and whats happening in a book. Also, when you read, really relax and try to make at least one hour of each day to read. Try to look forward to this.
Some great books are-
Norther Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass (Phillip Pullman)Face (Benjamin Zephania), Noughts and Crosses, Knife Edge (Malorie Blackman)and Stargirl (don't know author).
Hope I helped,
Zoinatrobe.

If you don't want to do the reading I suggest you check out a website called sparknotes.com. There you'll find study guides and summaries of just about any book. I've taken several literature class in college and of course back when I was in high school...the notes on the website were sufficient for the classes I took and should be for you too. They're usually like 15 pages or so. Another thing is you can always rent a film adaptation of a novel, it makes it more enjoyable. Give or take there may be a few changes, but you'll get the majority of it. Better yet, if you have the option of reading plays, which at my high school, it was counted, then not only are they shorter, but once again you can always pick up a film adaptation of most. I've used these ways to get of reading and have always done well on the exams. I do suggest actually reading some if you ever get the chance. i don't know what to suggest because I don't know your age, but everyone seems to enjoy the Harry Potter books and stuff like that. If you're older than that stuff...then check out the Da Vinci Code, its really good. Good luck with your reading. I hope I was of some help.

I know what's it like in your situation because I hate reading but at the same time I like to write.

Have you thought of reading something you enjoy or stick with easy books, nothing difficult or complicated.

There are books online which are free which you can read--children's books, could be novels or anything that you are interested in.

If this still doesn't work get the summarized version of the books you are suppose to read that way it doesn't take much from your part to read so many pages.

Well I have the exact same problem with A.R. it sucks i know...You should try a series of books that you might like..if you are say in middle school you may like, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, or The Series of Unfourtunate Events. They are all really good! If You are in Say Highschool you might like to read a harder series of books maybe Stephen King, but since you don't really like to read (who does) stick with thinner books. x0Cassandra

OMG!!! Are you talking about AR?!?! (Accelerated Reader) If you are.. I used to have to do that!! It sucks lol. Anyway just read like a bunch of short, little, easy books. Like 3rd grader books. The kind that take like less than an hour to read. Just read a bunch of those and then you'll get 100% on every test and you'll be able to get all your points. (leave me feedback, let me know if its AR that you are talking about!!)

***new response:*******
hey ok it's been a while since I had to do AR but some really good, entertaining, easy-to-read books that are probably the right level are Judy Bloom Books.. like "Fudge" and the books in that series.. do you know what I'm talking about? Also Harry Potter books get you A LOT of points, like I think the first book is atleast 10 or 15 points. So that right there is enough to earn all your points. Anyway hope I helped! Good luck! And don't worry, NO MORE AR IN HIGH SCHOOL! :-) (atleast not where I live..)
