Dont worry Jess, I have very short nails too. I usaully paint my nails up and down. Never side to side because that will make it run down to your cuticals. So up and down is best with short nails!
Here to help!

I paint my nails about...once a week.I've gotten to the point where I can draw little hearts and stripes and checks and get asked if they were done professionally.I fourtunately got my grandmother's nail beds so my nails can grow forever. But most of the time I keep them at a shorter length to prevent damaging my fretboard. My advice to you...make sure your nail polish is relatively new.(There is nothing worse than "goopy" nail polish.)Also start from the sides and have nice, long, and even strokes.Take your time and be patient.I normally work with a toothpick beside me.(I find they work better than your average Q-tip.)To get rid of all the little "accidents" you tend to have around your nail.Try your best to keep a steady hand. And after a while you will get better. ]
ok i know this happens to me, well first make sure you have nailpolish remover and q-tips, you know the things to clean ur ears, well put a couple of coats of nailpolish on , and then put a top coat, you know the thing that makes your nails shiny, then when it dries up, take the q-tip and dab it in nailpolish remover, then get the nailpolish thats got onto ur finger!
i do it allll the time, and i mainly wear bladk nailpolish so yeah!
-hope it works

Start off using some lighter colors like a green, blue, purple, red or somethin. Then when you think you have a hang for it try the darker.

after polishing use a tiny tipped brush dipped in remover to take off the excess..or a qutip that you have removed all the but a bit of fluff on..even professional get stuff on the sides! ]
This happens to me all the time too. Ok what i do it after i put nail polish on one nail...Right after i take a que tip and put nail polish remover on there then wipe off all the nail polish around it! It works really good! Hope i helped! ]
hi im jeska
i have really short nails to!! i hate them to death..hehe but this might sound dumb but it you put tape around the skin part it wont get on your skin..it works for me hope it works for you!!
love always jeska
write me back and tell me how it went or if there's anything else i can help with!! ]
Before painting your nails push your cuticles down. Also since you use dark colors you will want to apply a base coat to keep the nail polish from "staining" your nails. After pushing cuticles down use lotion then apply the base coat. Paint the first coat and if you must kind of paint really close to the skin and get a little on your skin ((don't worry it sounds bad but its really not)) then take a Q-Tip and put finger nail polish remover on it and take it off your skin. Do a second coat. Do the quick dry/top coat. Let dry and then enjoy your beautified nails! LOL
