Singing

Question Posted Sunday December 5 2004, 4:27 am

I have sung since I was about 6 or 7 years old. I have never been too bad at it but I have always lacked in confidence. I can sing fine on my own when no one is around to hear me, but when it comes to singing in front of people, I can't. My friend and I have to sing a verse from a song together for a christmas concert. My friend always has a sore throat so she is generally out of tune and she tends to start laughing. I then have to stop singing because I am too nervous to sing alone. How can I over come this fear of singing in front of people, so that if my friend laughs in the concert, I can just carry on?

Well have you ever heard the saying dance like theres no one watching??

soo true

Anyway I love to perform but I too was scared once... guess how I got over it... I didn't see the audience NOW THAT IS THE BEST WAY. Are you on a big stage with lots of lights? Are you singing with a mike or music in front of you?? Have you noticed that singers don't really care about who they are singing to just singing it. They might walk up to peopel in the audience but the people are just like props to make the song better- to make the singer more in the mood. So basically no matter what you are doing. You aren't there for them you are there for the dance, song, play, character- you are there for a job so get involved and sing your heart out

Seriously... no-one's watching- only the song

Okay ihave the same fear... but you just need to NOT look at the audience because then you get siked out. I had stage fright a while ago... but i loved being in plays etc. Well like 2 years ago i got the lead ... All you have to do is look past the crowd... also if she starts laughing DONT LAUGH ovbiously. Someimtes you just need to close your eyes and imagine your at home.

hope i helped a bit

Sweetheart, I am terribly shy in front of a crowd, but I sang solo in a Christmas program once. For me the music gave me the confidence I needed. Focus on the music. Also, remember, there are very few people who find standing up in a crowd easy. That you have the courage to sing will seem a miricle enough to some in your audience. If your friend starts laughing, and you trip up a bit, don't worry. People will be looking on her mistakes not you. Just pick up as best you can and everyone will admire your ability to push through and "go on with the show." You'll do GREAT! Big hug, Sweetheart!

I'm assuming that if that verse of the song with your friend was being tried out you're a really good singer. Remember that YOU are very important because if someone messes up you'll be there to back them up. It's such a very exciting feeling to know that you have the opportunity to be a part of a concert. You probably already know that you shouldn't stop when someone gets out of tune so I won't go on about that. The key to getting better at something is to practice and eventually you'll work your way up to overcoming this fear. It does work believe me. Why do you think so many people say practice makes perfect? =P Try singing in front of your friends, their parents, your parents, your family..etc. It's scary sometimes but you'll be making yourself look good and this will help you when it's time for the concert. However, you still should keep singing in your room. Everyone sings better in their room or when they're alone in a comfortable place. Think of it as an honor to be in this concert and do your part. If your friend laughs or gets out of tune you need to be there to back her up. She'll be lucky that you were there for her, trust me. If she messed up and you both stopped it would confuse everybody and things like that are embarrassing. Part of being a preformer is knowing that something could happen at anytime, but you have to keep going with what you're supposed to do to hide it or fix it. And just let your friend know that she has got to try to be really focused on what she's there to do. Good luck at the concert, you'll do great! Keep practicing hunnie and be proud that you're in it! Haha =D
Love,
Mandee

Believe in yourself. just believe that you can! If you believe in yourself, and believe that you're good thats all that matterS! what people say, do , or think, does not change who you are, you know who you are, and what people say doesnt change it! and dont let them, dont change for other people! be yourself, and believe in yourself!!!

Hope This Helps!

Chances are, you think you're a lot worse than you are. If you were picked to do this verse, then you must have a reasonable amount of talent, and like I say in my overconfident little bubble, "Flaunt it if you got it," so...Flaunt it! Go nuts! If you really love singing then you'll be able to concentrate only on that and leave everyone else behind you. Start thinking of something like what the lyrics mean to you and then sing it to convey that emotion. Most likely, if you're concentrating hard on one aspect of the song, you won't even realize you're singing in front of people.

Trust me, this is coming from somebody who could NEVER sing loud. Even if you aren't a good singer, know that you are and it will show through. Really, confidence is everything, if you lack it people can tell and it makes the piece sound weak. So just think that you have confidence in yourself, that you're the greatest singer in the choir...and you very well may be it by the end of that song.

Bite the bullet and just do it. I used to play Clarinet for my high school band and the only way to defeat nerves is to meet it head on.

Don't be so nervous.. your not likely to be bad and you'll be a damn sight better than most of the people in the audience.

Simon.
