I got mine pierced in july, and cleaned it 2 times a day and it's doing fine. I also know someone who pierced it themselves. It's doing fine also, but i would NOT recommend it. Not only is it not sanitary but it could end up in a catastrophe! Your best bet is to go get it pierced by a professional! You don't have to be a certain age, just take your mom, get her to sign some papers, and pick out the earring! Be sure to clean it though. It's not all that expensive, mine cost 37$ [ 3rdgrader0mance's advice column | Ask 3rdgrader0mance A Question ]
ChosenSummerGirl answered Saturday December 4 2004, 8:20 pm: Don't do it yourself even if you have steril stuff your ear can still get infected. Most of my friends said that it really hurt but was worth it because it's really cute. It is really not safe to do it yourself tho. Hope it looks great tho!!!

FunnyCide answered Saturday December 4 2004, 5:54 pm: if you completely sterilize the things that you are going to use SECONDS before you use them, then you have a greater chance of missing infection, but there is still a good chance. it will be EXTREAMLY painful. my aunt had it done for her and it hurt so badly that she took the earing out and let it grow up. its better to pay around 10 bucks and let wal*mart do it, or pay around 20 bucks and let somewhere like claires do it.

jayna33 answered Saturday December 4 2004, 5:29 pm: you shouldn't do it yourself if you weren't trained to know how to pierce cartilages. it is a very dangerous thing to get pierced. it could get severly infected. just leave it to a professional. [ jayna33's advice column | Ask jayna33 A Question ]
beauteful_withn answered Saturday December 4 2004, 2:29 pm: hey, it is safe- but i dont recomend it. i use to work at a place where i did ear piercing. before i started working there and learned all about piercing i pierced my cartilage myself and it got really infected. it wouldnt heal and just bubbled up. the problem with doing it yourself is that you might make it crooked and that too can cause trouble with the healing process. but thats what i think. good luck. Sunshinegurlie73 answered Saturday December 4 2004, 11:14 am: I seen my friends uncle do it to her by pushing the earing into her carilage, it hurts a little. But you should get it professionaly done because it will start to swell and irritate your skin, you need to make sure you have done it correctly done. Politics_Junkie answered Saturday December 4 2004, 12:45 am: Cartilage piercing is entirely safe when it is done by a professional with the proper equipment. It is never safe to do any kind of piercing yourself. You will not be able to get a piercing that will work with most earrings if you don't use the right equipment, you have a good chance of permanently messing up your cartilage or piercing a nerve and you run an incredibly high risk of infection. It doesn't matter if the equipment you use is sterile, incorrectly done piercings will become conduits for bacteria. Cartilage piercing, in particular, is considered a higher risk piercing and in many states, even professionals are under strict regulations about how they pierce cartilage. This is because piercings in the cartilage of the upper ear are more prone to infection than lobe piercings. Such infections can cause part of the ear to collapse and become disfigured. Some people have even lost parts of their ears because of infections in cartilage piercings. Professionals can reduce this risk to acceptable levels because they know appropriate places to pierce and they're using fully sterilized equipment designed for the task. Do not attempt to pierce your cartilage on your own, go to a professional. [ Politics_Junkie's advice column | Ask Politics_Junkie A Question ]
