Learning

Question Posted Monday November 29 2004, 10:49 am

I have a problem in the learning catagory. You see, I dropped out of school because of a few things, mainly panic attacks and basic miserableness (which I'm working on fixing now). Before 6th grade, I did great. Math, science, English... was all very easy to me.

Then in 6th grade things started going bad. I've been made miserble purposefully by most of my classmates for years. But I stuck it out. Then in 6th grade I started skipping because it was too hard around those people who hurt me all the time. And then I started enjoying the freedom and not doing all that work. So work started to become harder and I avoided doing it.

Now I feel useless and I actually want to get my education and go to college and all. The first step is to get my high school education. It's hard when I'm 18 and officially dropped out in 9th grade. (I hardly even did 7 and 8. I skipped a lot and they put me in 9th when I said I'd make an effort.) So I'm continuing my education through distance education.

I actually have been keeping up on brainy subjects because it interests me. I've been watching history and science documentaries for years and I've always loved books. The problem is that I have hardly been able to retain any of it in my head. I haven't been able to learn. I am doing all this mostly to learn (and to get ahead). But I just... can't remember how to learn. Hardly anything is getting in there anymore. What can I do? How do I learn?

If you really want to learn, try teaching yourself- get information from the web and library books and start projects on every suubject. Write down everything you learn in the project, but in your own words. This is the best way to memorise things. I know it sounds like a bore, but if you want to succeed in life this is actully the easy way. If not, try to get into a class for people who are not satisfied with thier old school grades.
Be serious about this, work your but off. This time now is the most important time for how you do in the future. Don't just say "this is boring, I'm not doing it". You can.

Okay well I know this sounds bad but school isn't just about being smart, its about learning the right answers. Lets test this shall we, I am a professor I know every single fact there is

I fail my essay because I don't knowt he layout

I obcviously didn't study what was going to be in the test did I. Firstly find out what you ahve to learn for your tests and assignments and learn that. The other isn't always needed for your educaiton. It makes you a more intelligent person but might not help your education becauser thats not in the test.

Also its not enough just to learn it, you have to revise it otherwise you'll forget it, your brain is like a filing cabinet. Its easy to put stuff in but takes practise to find out where to find them again. However if you keep getting that specific file out then you'll know where it is easily won't you. Same with information.

Different techniques of learning also help with different people. There are three types of learing, visual, audic and kinetic. You either learn by seeing things, listening to things or doing things. Most people are a mixture of them all but lean towards one of them. I know if you have no idea which one you are then there is a test which you can take which will tell you it. Good luck with you learning

*First of all...I know its hard...but you cant let what other people say or do to you bother you enuff to ruin your life. I mean 10/20 years from now...nothing they did is going to matter!Live your life for you...not anyone else!*&* if your havin trouble concentrating or something then see a doctor about possible medications you could get on to help you stay focused and atleast get your diploma and get out of high school

I don't know how distance learning works, so my advice could be way off here. Anyways, having someone (i.e. a tutor) to give you deadlines/assignments may help, because you'll have little goals to work toward. A tutor would also be able to help you figure out how you learn best (reading, listening, writing, etc).

I'm not sure learning is something you need to know how to do. In classes you just have to pay attetion to what the teacher is sayin and ask questions on what you don't know. On homework if you don't understand it ask someone, they would be happy to help. I have a teachers email address if you need it she is really good with stuff like that and would be able to help you. If you want it just drop one in my box and I will give it to you! hope I helped!

Learning is different for everybody. You might look up Job Corp in the phone book and see what they have to offer you. If I am not mistaken, they can tutor you to get your GED and possibly house you temporarily (not that housing is such a great thing).
Some people just have to work through the problems. Others do better after seeing someone else do an example. Repetition and memorization work for some things. I have made notes and then gone back and rewritten them. Sometimes if I write things down, I remember them the best because I can "see" the pieces of paper in my head. Ask someone close to you to tutor you. Help is out there, you just need to find it.
