Prunes are a good way to get things moving. I prefer my prunes in juice form so I can chug it down and don't have to taste it. My grandparents like to eat dried prunes on applesauce (they leave the prunes in the applesauce long enough for them to absorb the apple juice before eating them - about 10 or 20 min). Oatmeal is also an excellent way to clean out the intestines.

The three most common causes of constipation are (in no particular order):
* dehydration (not having enough water)
* lack of fiber
* too much iron

If you are taking vitamins with iron (or iron supplements), stop for a few days and see if that helps. Take it easy on iron heavy foods like spinach, raisins, and red meat.

Make sure you drink plenty of water. It's not good for everyday (it can screw up your salt balances), but try drinking a 6 or 8 ounce glass of water every hour until your urinating (peeing) every other hour.

Fiber can be found in whole grain products like oatmeal and whole wheat bread. It is also found in whole fruits and vegetables, but not so much in juices. There are fiber supplements like Metamusil (sp?).

Exercising regularly can also help keep a person "regular".

If all else fails, there are products like ex-lax that treat constipation.

You should be having between one and five bowel movements (poops) every 2 days. Bowel movements should pass easily without the need to strain (push hard). They should be solid and long (rabbits make pellets, people shouldn't) and keep their form in the toilet bowl for at least a few minutes. The shade of brown varies depending on what you've been eating, but they should not contain green or black.

Hope this helps. :)

Eat lot's of DRIED fruits, such as raisins. Stay away from chocolate milk or peanut butter. I don't know why, but choc. milk doesn't help AT ALL!! Good luck, and don't worry it's not fross. it happens.
