should I move?

Question Posted Sunday November 7 2004, 8:02 pm

A friend of mine needs a roommate, and I really want to move in with her because she's got a cool place and I'm sick of living on my own. The problem is that she's got a cat and I'm allergic to cats. The duplex has all hardwood floors and I'd have my own cat-free room, but I'm really nervous about moving in because cats really make me sick. Should I risk it?

my best friend has the same problem, she always took medicane every time she came over. I heard somewhere, im not exactly sure, that a pet can get a shot to help people not to be allergic to it. There could be a shot for you, who knows!

hope i helped a little

well, you should think about getting allergy shots. in about a year, your allergy will start to go away. also, you should spend some time in your would-be room and see if it affects you in any way, like , if it makes you get a reaction.

How allergic are you to cats? Did you know that when you are allergic to cats it's actually the saliva that your allergic to? I have recently learned this in my Small Animal Care and Handling class. If your actually allergic to cats, and your just allergic to their saliva, then you only need to worry about this if the cats bites or scratches you. And most people are not affected by it too severely. I am allergic to cats, but I'm going to school to be a Veterinary Technologist. That's because I am only slightly allergic. If I get scratched and I don't clean it right away, then the place that gets scratched will only slightly swell up. But if I get scratched and clean it out with peroxide or alcohol, or some other disinfectant, then I will nto be affected at all by the toxin in their saliva.

Now, do you actually mean that you are allergic to the cat dander? I am also allergic to cat dander, but my mother always had pet cats when I was growing up. I found that it took a week or so for me to get used to the smell of the cat, and then I would be fine. If that doesn't work for you, there are medications that you can use. You most likely will not need to take those medications all the time, but only when you have a bad allergy episode.

My opinion is that you should try staying at your friends house. But do not make a choice after only one day. When your in a new house and you have allergies, then it's always going to take a short while for you to get used to the smells and dust and animal hair. Just give it some time, and you will eventually stop sneezing every time the cat walks by you. Plus, if you have your own cat-free room, then you'll always have a "safe" place to go. And depending on how clean she keeps her house and litter box, it shouldn't take long for you to settle in and stop sneezing.

Well if your willing to put up the all the allergies, sure go ahead why not. My mom is allergic to cats, and I got a cat and she started taking medicine for it and now her allergies are controlled or whatever. If you really really want to move in there just go to the doctors and see what you can do about it. They will probably give you some pills.

what i have to say it, maybe you should give it a try, but before you move in talk to your doctor and see if there is any medication that might help, if you living with her doesnt work, she wont be heartbroken, you'll still be friends and there will be plenty of other chances to live with people.

hope i helped!

if you get as sick as you say. i'd say no i wouldn't risk it. my boyfriend is allergic to cats and when we go to visit his parents (they have cats) he starts sneezing within the first hour of visiting. and he seems so uncomfortable because of it. unless you really think you can tolerate it then i guess it's worth a shot. you might be able to find some medicine to lesson your allergies.

If you have SUPER bad allergies than probably not, but if your allergies are mild than I think you should. Also, if you have REALLY good allergy medication than it'll be ok. You may want to try living with her for a few nights and see if it bugs you... if so than moving in isn't a good idea! hope this'll help!
