Playing flute with braces I'm going to get braces within a few weeks and I'm kinda starting to worry about playing flute with them. Do any of you have braces and play flute? If so, is there anyway you can position the flute so it's not right on your chin when you play? Also, will having braces dramatically change my performance?

Hello!
I've been playing flute for quite awhile and I plan on majoring in flute performance in college so I was excited to see this question!
When I was in the seventh grade I got my braces on and my performance did change, but only for about two weeks. It's just a matter of getting used to the way your embouchure is going to feel. The thing about trying to move the flute so it's more comfortable is confusing. It might be more comfortable if it's not right on your chin but make sure your lip isn't covering the tone hole...if you do put it farther on your lip make sure you roll out on your head joint! Good luck! ]
Braces wont mess up the way you play. I don't play the flute (I play tenor saxophone)instead. I play my cousins flute ALL the time and it doesnt bother me. Braces wont afect how you play and wont afect your playing. It will sound the same with or without braces!!! Hope that I helped and tell me how it goes!! ]
crap!! i hated that! it`s harder with piccolo though =( try to keep it in the same place and maybe you can put wax over your braces to stop cutting in. it won`t really interfere, but you really have to keep at it!
good luck

you shouldnt worry about your performance changing. i have played flute for 2 years with braces and it kind of improved my learning situation. i dont know how, but it seems like i have gotten better at finding the right position. just dont let it get to you. it will all be ok. -PA ]
I don't play the flute anymore, but I used to, and I had braces.
Once you get used to them, which doesn't take much time at all, you're fine, and you just play like normal. ]
Havin braces doesnt effect the performance of playin the flute idk ne like way to position it wen playin so its not on ure chin but i think u just gotta get used to them and everythin will be fine hope i helped

Playin' flute with braces is cool.
Nobody has a problem with it.
Don't worry about it.
Look at all the band geeks in high school with braces... It's horrible.
Braces and flutes go togehter like ketchup and mustard. ]
This is one I'm not sure I can help with...
I play flute, too, but I was so into it that I decided against getting braces so they wouldn't interfere with my playing.
My friends told me that the braces get in the way at first and hurt a little, but then you get used to it and you can still play. The fourth chair in band last year had braces since before I met her a year ago, and she was still pretty good.
Hope I helped a little!
