Question Posted Thursday July 22 2004, 12:13 am

I'm 15 years old & I have an over protective mom. She makes sure my shirt doesn't show my chest at all and my pants do not show any of my underwear. She barely even lets me out with my friends! I mean, its summer and I wanna stay out late with my friends alot. Its not like I have to study or get up early for school! I just want to have a little more freedom since I'm getting older and have always been responsible and never got into too much trouble. What should I do?

Have you spoken to her about the way you feel? Explain to her that you're not a little kid anymore. You'd like to be able to stay out late with your friends - you don't have to get up early, etc...give her valid reasons, and ask her why she feels the need to stop you from doing these things.
Try not to be accusatory or she may get mean. Keep your cool, no matter how she responds, and try to avoid using the word "you."
Good luck!

Sit down and talk to her and tell her why she should trust you. I have this lil thing with my mom where i tell her where im going to be when i'll be home and when im leaving and if i go anywhere else i call her.. so its easier like that as long as our mom's know where we are then she should relax about it.. i mean were young once so live it up while we can. I just made a deal with her and thats how its been. I mean yeah i want to stay out way later but she lates me stay out till curfew.. and thats when everybody has to go inside anyways its 11:00 here.. so its good enough for me.. Just make a deal with your mom and tell her to give it a chance. Just make sure you dont blow it-trix

Heaven forbid that your pants don't show your underwear. She's being a little out of line by not letting you go out with your friends. Talk to her about that and ask why she doesn't trust you. But if you're gunna dress like that,I can kinda see why she doesn't. What makes you think that people wanna see your thong? Would you wanna see my boxers?

Talk to your mom and explain to her you are able to handle yourself. Maybe she feels shes not ready to let go of her child that shes protected and loved for 15 years. You have plenty of time but really make sure she knows where you are and make a compermise. it will work out for the best.

i think you should talk to ur mom about the whole clothes situation. i mean you are getting older...and fast. life is short, and your younger years are the most fun. explain to her your reasons why you want to hang with ur friends late at night. make sure to ask her her side of the situation. tell her you are getting older and you think you should have more freedom, like longer curfiew or sumthings like that. tell her that what you wear, is another way that you can express who you are. my friends parents and even my own are like that. i cant wear make up out, but i do anyways. if you carry a purse around and you have to wear the "over protective clothes" just put a shirt/pants in there and then change. but dont forget to change back into ur first clothes b4 you get home. hope i helped -PA

Well, this is a toughie... I grew up with a protective mom as well...
But I do want to say one thing, at least she loves you. I mean there are plenty of moms out there who just let their kids out all night and don't care when they get home... They don't bother to ask where they are going or what they are doing, and those are the teens who get in trouble. But I guess the deciding factor with my mom was when I showed that I had responsible friends, and I still can't stay out too late, but it's ok because I can spend time with my friends since my mom trusts them.
Sure, it's fun to stay out late, but when your mom says she doesn't like you doing it, she's probably going to stick to it. But the best thing to do is stay responsible, don't get into trouble, and respect your mom's decision, as hard as that may be.
