my career in cheerleading might be over!

Question Posted Thursday July 22 2004, 12:19 am

I have been cheerleading for 3 years now. this past winter, i hurt both my knees, bad. i went to the doctor recently and she said that it was a rare disease that would take about 2 more years to go away. she said if it got any worse, i would have to stop cheerleading. cheerleading is what i do-it's my life. i can't just stop. what can i do to help my knees not to hurt as much? help!

Stretching out before practice and games will help a lot. I wouldn't take took many aspirin or advil because it will eventually hurt your stomach. If its swelling after practice, put ice on it; CVS and Walgreen have these cool strap on ice packs you can keep in the freezer. I would ask the doctor if there was anything you can do to help.
I know its hard to have to quit doing something you love. Maybe you could become a cheerleading coach for younger children. They could use your help learning cheers and routines, and they don't always do the jumping and lifting the older children do. Don't count yourself out before it happens.

well you can exercise your legs and i have been thro 2 carwrecks so i know how to strengthen your legs. just let me know if you want them. you are going to have to take it easier. and if it gets worse you will have to cut back on your cheerleading. maybe not completly tho. so it's better to be able to walk believe me. if you want those exercises just let me know.
good luck!!!!! *~~~shana~~~*

stop cheerleading. Seriously, it's your only choice. I broke a finger and had to stop playing all my instruments (and knitting, crocheting, etc), sure, it's hard to go through deprivation of what you love, but you just learn to appreciate it more. And you can learn to do other things during that time. It's really not so bad. Write poetry, play chess, knit, make music, art, start acting. Find a star and chase it across the universe until it becomes cliche. Just not one that involves strain to your knees. it will be tough, but it will be worth it in the end.

If you still want to chearlead, do it. My stepmom's dad was told he would never walk again, and he can run a mile. And my stepmom, told she was going to die of cancer, it's ten years later and she's doing just fine. What i am saying is, if you think you should still chearlead, do it. If you end up hurting your leg really badly, it'll only be temperary or something else might come out of it. Maybe you will find another passion, or become a choreographer instead of a chearleader. I really hope your knees get better, i know i would hate it if i couldn't dance again. I'm very sorry

Take advil every four hours every day. I have knee probs too and it works like a charm. Also stretch your legs and take baths and ice your knee. They make special knee pumps that like make ur knee more stable or sumthin I have one and it really works. Good luck with Cheerleading! xoxo~Shea

Also just incase, find another hobby that u also really like.!

PS- Drop one in my inbox and I can recomend some good stuff to help ur knees!

You should go to knee therepy. And stretch it out really well before you do cheerleading, but you dont want anything seriosly happening to you, so just dont do it as much.
