They are usually held in more remote places to avoid attention. The dogs there are usually held in tiny little cages that they dont even have enough room to stand. All they can do is lay. They cages are rarely if ever cleaned so they are forced to live in their own feces and filth. They are not fed properly and are usually very skinny and sickly. Alot of these dogs have diseases because they never recieve vet attention and usually do not even have the required vaccinations. The sole purpose of these dogs is to breed. Their well being is not cared about. Money is the only thing cared about. They are often bred with their sibling or children which cause the offspring to often have deformities or diseases. They are often mistreated and abused.
I dont know if time has changed things, but in the past, many commercial petstores got their puppies from puppymills because of the cheap price. So it is not recommended to get a puppy from a petstore either. Puppy mills also sell puppies over the internet so if you come across a website that says they will ship the puppy to you, chances are it is a puppy mill. Reputable breeders would not ship a puppy. Puppy mills do it because they cant allow you to see the conditions of where these dogs live so shipping the puppy to you takes care of that.
Hope I helped and be cautious of puppy mill operations. Do not help them continue this horrible business by buying from them. Go to a local shelter or find a reputable breeder. [ elw5039's advice column | Ask elw5039 A Question ]
WittyUsernameHere answered Monday May 10 2010, 4:10 am: An irresponsible breeder.
Most breeders have a set number of litters per dog which do not tax the animal's ability to be healthy. They only breed as many dogs as the can sell and ensure homes for, and generally breed dogs of sufficient caliber that they end up desired and snapped up quickly.
Puppy mills, by comparison, overbreed in order to always have puppies available. They breed dogs to the furthest extents of their endurance and biology, and cannot afford anything like humane conditions for the animals because of the numbers they deal with. When puppies go unsold they often end up on the streets, or in animal shelters. Puppy mills advertise dogs like a commodity instead of a living breathing animal, sell them that way, and treat them like a product you cram onto a shelf. Many states have laws addressing the practice or are enacting them, there was a puppy mill in my city which got shut down by animal control for having over two hundred puppies crammed into space for about twenty. Many were sick and dying because of the lack of demand in the local area for puppies (rural areas always have plenty of free pets from farm pets who breed and such) [ WittyUsernameHere's advice column | Ask WittyUsernameHere A Question ]
just_ask_me answered Sunday May 9 2010, 8:38 pm: It is basically a dog breeding facility. You can definitely google it and get more info on it, but it is not a good place at all. Puppy mills breed dogs regardless of their health, and keep breeding them until they can't reproduce anymore. The puppies are treated horribly (abused) most of the time, and live in very cramped, dirty conditions. Vidoes of puppy mills are frightening, heartbreaking, and disturbing so I suggest not watching them. The owners of puppy mills care more about the money they receive from mass breeding, then the dogs, and generally don't care about them. Pet stores usually get their puppies/dogs from puppy mills, so the store you saw, advertised that they did not (which was a good thing). [ just_ask_me's advice column | Ask just_ask_me A Question ]
OhMyLucyDarling answered Sunday May 9 2010, 8:37 pm: A puppy mill is a place that breeds dogs, You can have poodle dog and that poodle dog will breed more poodle dogs and then the babies of that poodle dogs breed more poodle dogs etc. However, Puppy mills can be a variety of dogs. They say it's bad to buy puppies from mills because many of them could be sick and it is supporting puppy breeding. Puppy mills can also be known as Puppy farms, Which tend to be overloaded with dogs most of the time and not all of them are guaranteed homes.
