It depends. Is the softwear availible under the open source licese? That is usally free, but prodcuts like microsoft ones it is illegal and you can be taken to court for piracy and copyright infringment. That is if you get caught. Also many comercial softwear has things to stop the product working if it is used by anyone other than the one who payed for it.

legally, yes.. It is called "Pirating" and is a breach of 99.9% of copywrite laws, and the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copywrite Act).

You could get into serious trouble over this.
99% of the time you won't... but you can.

Not to mention, if noone pays for the programs, how do the programmers eat? =)

Yes. Now think about this for a second. If no one pays for any of their software then where will the money come from to create the software or pay the wages of those who must develop and make it?

Theft is theft I'm afraid. (theft is theft is borrowed by me from those satellite theft commercials on tv)

Only if it's non-free software (i.e. much of it). Someone is feeding their kids on that software's returns, even if their CEO may be buying their third Hummer on it too.

Free software, like OpenOffice, Mozilla, Linux, the GIMP, etc. is free as the air you breathe... and it doesn't suck. It's made by hobbyists or people who make their money by consulting or custom work (or with their day jobs), and they want you to have it. There's lots of programming, multimedia, OS, office and Internet software made under one Free license or another.

Lizzy answered Monday December 29 2003, 3:08 pm:
Yes it is, but everyone does it and it can't be that bad. Just try to do it, it'll be fine. Also, what software is it, some is illegal but some it is not. Just check and make sure it is not, then if it is not, it'll be fine.
Good Luck
Lizzy

If downloading music or videos is illegal, this probably is too. I wouldn't risk it, if I were you.

These days copying music etc. can get you arrested, sued, or fined. So I would say yes.
