Small Dogs

Question Posted Wednesday June 28 2006, 6:03 pm

We are moving this summer and my parents told me I could get a dog. I want a small dog that I can carry around with me everywhere. I've thought about getting a bichon frise for quite some time, but I found out that they can get fairly big sometimes. Any ideas on some small, full bred dogs I could get? And some of the positives and negatives about them?

I agree...they aren't an accsessory.
But, if you are honestly thinking about it then read on...!
I think Lhasa Apso's are great...they stay pretty small and ours only needs to be played with for an hour or two each day and she's happy, that isn't much.
the only bad things are they yapping, i hate yappy dogs, and this is one of them! and they have long fur, we have to brush her every day...but it's easy enough to have them clipped.
Also shih-tzu's are great as well, they have such kind natures!

here's a few...

Yorkshire Terrier: PROS-very loyal. loves to be in a social household. doesn't require much exercise. CONS-grows long coat that needs to be groomed often. doesn't get along with children. prfers to live in a household with adults.

Cocker Spaniel: PROS-very affectionate. Has a willingness to learn and is very intelligent. Gets along with other dogs and children. CONS-can be difficult to house-train. Seems to bark and be louder than other dog breeds.

Shih-Tzu: PROS-has a happy, outgoing, and affectionate temperament. good with kids. bonds with every memer of the family, making it a great companion. grooming and exercise needs are minimal. CONS-also can be difficult to housebreak. tend to weeze and snore. can be stubborn and clever;likes to outsmart its owner.

Pomeranian: PROS-very affectionate dogs. eager for basic training. lively, outgoing, and alert. CONS-tends to act unfriendly towards other dogs. grooming needs are high. can act very cocky.

Chihuahua: PROS-very intelligent and learns quickly. intensely loyal and strong willed. loves affection and is extremely active. CONS-becomes VERY attached to its owner, therefore behaving aggresive towards other people. often snaps and children with its sharp teeth. doesn't like other dogs and demands attention and affetion from their owners. can be very noisy sometimes and difficult to housebreak.

These are only a FEW of all the small dog breeds out there, but these are the ones I like the most although the chihuahua isn't one i favor. Hope this helps you!

Small dogs often have temperment issues because someone spoils them and carries them everywhere!

I am currently going to school to be a dog obiedience trainer and one class I took was breed selection. If you tell me more about your lifestyle..Like what do you do for fun? Are you active or laid back? Is someone going to be home most of the time? Do you have a fenced yard? Are there younger children in the household? If you want just send the question to my in box and I can help you.

I have a Bichon Frise! Yes, you are right mine stayed very small but most of them are big. I would suggest getting a maltise (they look like Bichon Frise's but are smaller) Chiwowa (can't spell) and yorkshire terriors. If you don't know what those are just google image it. Also, for more help just google "small dogs" and you'll get tons of results!!

I have 2 little dogs and i LOVE them to death!! I have chihuahuas but if you're not a chihuahua type person then a yorkie they are adorable! I would suggest a toy, not a teacup !!! Teacups get sick very easy and die quicker.

Oh my gosh! I LOVE little dogs!!! What I prefer for little dogs is maybe a yorkie (those r cute), a pomeranian, or DEFINITLEY a chihuahua.

ONE IMPORTANT THING: do not get a super small dog as they call (teacups, mini, etc.) usually those dogs tend to have organ failure later on, if not that they are sick A LOT which equals many many visits to the veteranarian! They may be as cute as can be but they won't live long enough.

I have two chihuahuas and they are the sweetest things ever! I hope you enjoy your new doggie! Remember, NO SUPER SMALL DOGS!

Getting a dog is great.

Getting a dog as a fashion accessory, however, is cruel.

Dogs don't want to be carried around all day and dressed up in clothes. They're an ANIMAL. A living, breathing, animal, unlike your purse or your hat.

Small dogs are prone to back problems. Fact. Veteranarians advise that small dogs not be picked up often, as it is stress on their back.

If you want a dog, fine. Get one, they're great companions. But as I said before THEY ARE ::NOT:: FASHION ACCESSORIES.
