Giving advice is sort of second nature to me. I use to have a column on here but ended up deleting it. Now once again I have decided to give advice again. I value people and their problems and try to help them the best I can.
No question is a silly question. Every question has importance. I sometimes feel like some of my questions I want to ask are viewed as pointless but have comed to realize that this isn't entirely true.
My biggest pet peeves are bad spelling, grammar and punctuation. It's silly, but I mean it's not that difficult to tell the difference between you're and your. Or even their, they're and there. No offense if you do any of this, but we learned all of these when we were younger in 5th grade (give or take).
Personally one of my favorite quote is by Eleanor Roosevelt. "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."
If only people would truly realize this, the world would be so much happier.

ok well im 16 female 120 lbs. & 5'8". my BMI was 18.1 (i just calculated) and my BMR was 1421.4. what does all this mean? im dieting, and ive lost 11 lbs so far (i was 131) does this affect it? i know what BMI & BMR are, but i just dont know what my RESULTS mean. help? any appriciated, thanks :)
Your BMI is your body mass index. It's a number used to calculate healthy weights, and obesity.
Your BMR is your basal metabolic rate. BMR is a number that shows how many calories you burn. 1421.4 is your sedentary BMR(I'm assuming). It means that even if you sit around all day, just breathing and doing basically no activity like working out, that's what your body burns.
BMR gives everyone an idea of how many calories they should consume in food per day.
If you exercise, you sometimes need to eat more than the 1421.4 since exercise adds a greater calorie burn.
Congratulations on your weight loss so far too.
so a couple years ago i was on the slimfast diet i was exercising too much and wounded up in the hospital for not eating enough. now, im back on the diet because i wanna loose a couple of pounds for hawaii. right now, im not losing the weight but i thinknits cause im doing weights and such. although, if i ndont exercise for one day and i eat a piece of chocolate i find my day being ruined and i consistley eat. what can i do to stop this?? am i not eating enough? i weigh 138 and im 5'9 i wanna be 130. although i do have a lot of muscle. let me know what is going on? is my binging and eating disorder comng back?! thanks ill rate goood!!
You're eating emotionally, which ultimately leads up to the binge. It's sort of like a mind game you're playing with yourself right now (I've been there believe me). I'm 5'9" just like you so I'm assuming you look fine even at 138. It's probably more of the mind set you've had from your old eating disorder.
To be completely honest with you doing weights won't make you gain a huge amount of weight. If you gain anything it'd probably be muscle(which takes time to build). If you do weights and a cardio routine of jogging, running, biking, what have you, you'll be okay since you're getting more physically active. You shouldn't be doing any extreme dieting or exercise it's not worth it in the end.
I can't tell you if you're eating enough or not. You should eat a good amount of protein (found in meats like beef, chicken, turkey), eggs, diary and peanut butter. Eating vegetables and fruits help provide vitamins and nutrients. Plus whole grains help too (which you can get from cereals like Kashi or breads that say whole grain on the label).
If you're drinking a lot of water by the way, the weight you're not losing could be water weight from water retention.
For your mindset stay positive and think healthy. Don't get caught up in the trap of feeling guilty if you don't work out one day or even eat a piece of chocolate. Sometimes the day off is necessary for our bodies to stay strong, and the piece of chocolate can help us keep sane on a diet.
Good luck, and if you need anything message me.
seems like everyone in this world can not just be with one person. they end up cheating. why are people like that?
Honestly, I believe there are people out there who can remain faithful. It can happen, trust me.
Sometimes people end up cheating because they lose interest in the relationship and fall out of love. It can even be out of boredom from being bored of the relationship.
Relationships are a lot of work, and sometimes people aren't willing to work at them, or try to and give up. The giving up can lead to cheating too.
There can be different reasons for cheating too. It varies from person to person.
is doing 300 jumpinjacks, crunches and pushups mostly everday over-exerscsing?
Honestly you'll burn yourself and your body out if you do that much.
You can do 3 sets of crunches with 15 reps. (A rep if 15 crunches in a row, and you take breaks in between those sets) This also works for push ups as well.
And for jumping jacks you can do a minute of jumping jacks and then maybe 3 sets of lunges with 15 reps. Do a minute of jumping jacks again and then do squats (3 sets 15 reps)
Ive been dieting and exercising for almost 4 years now and At first i lost alot of weight, maybe around 40 pounds.
My body became pretty immune to it and i slowly gained alot of weight back, but ofcourse i grew alot of inches so i don't necassarily look "fat" but i am a tad chubby.
I wanted to know if anyone has ever tried and used nutrisystem and if it works?
I do exercise every single day,i just have a portion control problem and i eat alot so i think that if i have set portions ,i'll eat less.
Would anyone recommend it though?
Honestly, I tried it a few years ago and didn't like the food at all.
It is expensive I know that, but for that price the food isn't that good.
Jenny Craig though is more expensive but actually has better food and a better selection of food at that.
I sympathize with not being able to use portion control because I have that problem as well, but what helps me is I measure everything out with a scale and measuring cups.
There's a book out called the Portion Control Diet gives great visual tips on what portions of steak, chicken, muffins and even cookies look like.
Keep up with dieting and exercising it'll work out in the end. I worked out for me.
If you need anything though message me I'd be happy to help.
I have a very slim phsyique. Like my body is very slender and long. The only issue is the waist area below and around my belly button. It's like this these two bumps of fat on either side of my navel. It's weird since the rest of me is slim. I don't have any other places on my body that are fatty like my tummy. Imagine this: Skinny rib area. Skinny waist area. Then *bowm*. Fat. It really is queer looking. So I need some exercises to target this tummy area. My natural waist is fine; I just need target exercises for the low-riding jeans waist area. Thanks, LOL.
There's no such thing as spot reduction. Spot reduction is where you just lose inches off of one specific area of your body.
To maybe lose belly fat, you could start doing more cardio. Cardio is the one thing that always burns fat. You could go jogging, ride a bike, or even dance around your house.
After you do cardio you can work out with a stability ball (big inflatable balls you can buy anywhere like Target). Good thing about those is you can do a variety of exercises like crunches.
Diet is also key when you try to lose weight anywhere. Eat healthy foods, and avoid junk food. Yogurts, nuts, lean meats, fruit, veggies, whole grains. There are all great for you. Don't fall into the trap where you think you can work out and eat junk. And try to avoid diet soda, because it's not really healthy for you. Just drink water.
I need to lose about 40 pounds and want to try NutriSystem. have any of you been on it and do you like the food? NutriSystem is the cheapest compared to Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers.
Any insight on N.S?
I tried NurtriSystem in the past, before I actually followed my own diet which incorporated some of Weight Watchers idea.
Honestly I hated NutriSystem. To me the food was bland, not good at all, and very tasteless. Some of the meals that were suppose to be "pasta" were like cardboard. Plus the "steak" even on the commercial looks like a meat patty, not even a steak.
Jenny Craig from what my mom told me- is that the food is better b than NutriSystem. It offers a more extensive and variety of food than NutriSystem. (NutriSystem has these chocolate things for desserts while Jenny Craig offers you a small sized chocolate cake).
Jenny Craig does cost more but I think it's a "You get what you pay for" type of situation. If you want try NutriSystem, see if you like it, and then maybe try Jenny Craig.
I wish you the best of luck on your weight loss journey.
hi, i'm a 15 year old 5'4 135lbs female.
i'm not too much over weight, but i have big hips and cottage cheese thighs and a stomach. i also have big lovehandles and even more fat folds but i'm not that fat i dont know whats wrong, i know my body type runs in the family on my mothers side for all women, but i cant figure out how to make it go away. i really want to start going to a gym, but i'm too young to have a membership of my own at my mothers gym, (or even a guest pass). this really makes me mad, and i want to go to somewhere like 24 hour fitness, or total fitness. my best friend is much bigger than i am, but shes also taller and weighs more, but she has a membership to 24hour fitness with her mom. i had a thought that if i can get a guess pass or member ship at her gym and go with her all the time maybe i could work all my fat and chubbyness off. i'm really not fat i just always feel gross and like i need to workout. i know that i get mad and angry alot and i do eat alot, but i always want to hurtsomeone or something, or break someone or something, i usually controll my agression and anger by working out or listening to music.
can anyone give me advice on what to do? should i ask my friends gym if i can join and go with her, or what should i do? how can i get rid of all my chubbyness? i really want feedback asap, because i dont like my body eventhough everyone always complements me on how nice i look...(usually they are looking at my butt or my breasts)
thanks a bunch!
Maya
You can try joining the gym with your friend, but I have a feeling you might not be able to if you're not of age to join all by yourself. If that's the case she was able to join because of her mother. So maybe you can join the gym with your mom since basically no matter what (unless there are age limits) you'll probably be able to join.
I'm am truly sorry to tell you this, but there is no such thing as spot reduction to lose weight. This means there's no true way to just lose weight in your hips, thighs, and stomach. You'll have to do cardio, meaning ride a bike, go jogging (treadmill or outside is fine), even the elliptical machine. Anything to get your heart rate up which will burn calories. From that you'll probably lose most of the fat, it'll take time but it'll eventually happen. After that you'll need to do strength training workouts which will be easy if you join a gym. Stability balls work best with abs too. So you can tighten up your abs with it.
I read you said you eat a lot because you're angry or upset. That's emotional eating which you'll need to let go. When you start working out you'll find a new outlet to release that anger. If anything try kickboxing it works wonders.
You'll need to eat a healthy diet. I'm not telling you to not eat the things you love, because then you'll never want to watch what you eat since it'll be restricting. What I am suggesting you do is to keep a food diary and write down every single little thing you eat, and count every single calorie in it. You'll realize that this will work better for you since you'll know how many calories you're eating or overreating and it'll help you watch your portions.
Great website for counting calories is-
www.calorie-count.com
Good luck with your jounrey though. It'll require a lot of time and motivation, but in the end it's worth it.
can anyone give me ideas on some yoga or anything that can calm my nerves? i dont have time to go to a gym or class so i just need some simple excercises that i can do before i go to bed or something that will calm me down (i dont fall asleep fast) and also something that will keep me awake during school..something that will teach me flexibility to.
Thanks in advance:)
For tranquility you could do some simple meditation before bed. Deep breathing and clearing your mind of any negativity would help. No music, no tv, nothing while you meditate.
Yoga is a great thing for flexibility. My favorite pose is the downward dog and child's pose.

how do i get the motivation to firm up my body. i am very busy adn jsut had heart surgery. so it has to be quick easy adn fun... a work out that takes 15 min a few times a week in a small space... i dont need to loose weight i weigh only 110 adn i'm 5'3" so i'm just fine, but since my health issues ive lost my tone can anyone help
Motivation takes time to occur no matter what you do. It's a psychological thing. Everyone use to tell me that and I never believed them, but then one day it totally just clicked for me and I started to be extremely motivated with working out and eating right. You'll get that click in your head when you're ready, and when you do there will be no stopping you trust me.
This is going to sound totally stupid but sometimes when I'm in a pinch and can't do a major work out I'll put on good music and just dance around the house. It's good for a cardio substitute since it will get your heart pumping. You could always go for a brisk walk, but with the colder weather outside I'm not sure you'll be able to depending on where you live. Also try walking in place, or even jogging in place I heard that depending on how intense you do it, you'll burn the same amount of calories as if you were on a treadmill or even jogging outside.
There are a lot of cardio DVDs out now. I have a few from SHAPE magazine which really help me. The DVDs have a preset menu guide which let you do a long workout or a shorter one.
Taebo amped comes with like 4 different dvds to workout to and this weight called an amplifier. i was thinking about buying it, has anybody used it? does it show good results? if so, how long did it take ti see the results? thnx in advance to whoever can help me :]!
All I've heard are good things about Tae Bo. Honestly I do kickboxing and it works for me. I know my mom use to use Tae Bo when it first came out and she loved it. Anyway in general you'll probably see results anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks depending on how much weight you need to lose, or how much you need to tone. Pair your exercise with a good diet, and you'll see positive results in all honesty.
My Sweet 16 is coming up in the next couple months, (but I want to start planning now), and I don't want a big party. Instead, I want to do something special, just for me. Like going to some extravagant restuarant with the family, getting tips from a pro makeup artist (though that is a little over the top for me), or something like that. Something fun for a 16 year old girl to do. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion as to what some other options might be?
Depending on where you live, you can get maybe a limo and take your close friends to a nice dinner at a restuarant that isn't too extravagant. I know a lot of my friends did that. Or go to the extravagant restuarant with your family, and instead of the pro make up artist, get like a little make over. Getting your hair done, and maybe a facial or a massage. It'd be extremely relaxing and a destresser.
I actually had a little brunch for my friends and then had a mini make over thing. It was really nice since I didn't want an all out party.
What are the best ways to boost your metabolism?
A good way for you to boost your metabolism is by having frequent meals throughout the day. Eating 5-6 meals (3 large ones which would be breakfast, lunch and dinner and then 2 smaller ones which would be snacks) through out the day help balance your metabolism and your blood sugar.
For breakfast you can eat cereal that has a good amount of fiber and protein like Kashi Go Lean, paired with blueberries or bananas and non fat milk.
For snacks you can have celery sticks or carrots with hummus, whole wheat pita with either hummus or peanut butter, apples, oranges, 100 calorie packs and milk, yogurts, or even some mixed nuts. All of these things are good since you can have fiber, and have protein.
Lunches are simple. Salads with some lean protein like turkey or chicken, and nuts are good. You can even have a regular sandwich like turkey on whole wheat or whole grain bread, then have an apple with a sugar free jello or chewy granola bar.
Have a snack in between lunch and dinner. For ideas see snacks above.
And eat dinner like you regularly do. Either pasta, tomato sauce and meat sauce, or even a hamburger.
Eating these meals through out the day help stabalize blood sugar, and keep your metabolism high.
Try doing something like cardio. Running, even walking around helps keep your heart rate up which in turn helps you metabolism.
hey everyone!
i rate. and give feedback!
so please help me.
ok so my thighs are kinda..big. like there not fat but there not skinny there pretty chubby though. and i dont like it. what can i do to make my thighs skinnier?? and around my knee i think its fat cause its kinda chunky there. but anyone who can help please..

There is truly no such thing as spot reducing your body. You can't just spot reduce your thighs or any other place without working out the rest of your body.
Try doing cardio which will help burn fat. Things like running, jogging, riding a bike all do this. After cardio you can do things like squats and lunges to help strengthen your thighs, so you won't do any damage to the muscle.
Secondly don't eat junk. Eat healthy foods in your diet like fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grain, lean meats. These all will make a difference and your body will thank you afterwards.
Hope this helps. =)
Ok so I am seriously determined to lose weight and tone up but I need a little bit of hints and pointers. My main problem areas are my tummy, inner thighs and my entire back. If anyone knows of things that I can to to work on these areas thanks and it is much appreciated.
I'm sorry to tell you this, but there is absolutely no way to spot reduce. Meaning there's no way you can just lose weight in your tummy, inner thighs and entire back without working out your whole body. Honestly, the only thing you really can do is some cardio to burn fat. And then some strength training to tighten the muscles. For your stomach you can defintely do abdominal work, crunches on a stability ball are truly good. Secondly running helps your inner thighs and abs completely. Trust me. Thirdly ith cardio you'll lose fat everywhere helping your back problem area.
Don't forget a good diet goes a long way. If you eat good things like nuts, yogurt, lean meats like turkey and chicken, and whole grains you're body will thank you. So don't eac too much junk food, it'll make a difference in how you feel, and how your body performs. You'll have a good amount of energy for workouts.
Hope this helps you. And if you have any more questions there's a website called calorie-count.com that has different forums you can read on nutrition, diet, and exercise.
Does anyone know if MIKA has concerts? If so, where do they have them? I live in Massachusetts and they're like my favorite band. I can't get enough of "Happy Ending". Do they only play in other countries or in Cali or anything. Websites are great. Thanks in advance.
I know during May/June he was here in NY. So maybe you could try his website mikasounds.com, or ticketmaster.com. He'll probably come on tour here in the US if he has a new CD coming out.
I'm not one to be too concerned about my figure- seriously, I don't care if I don't have a bikini bod, and hardly ever watch what I eat too closely. But recently (last few months or so) my stomach has gotten pretty flabby. I'm also beginning to get more concerned about my health...so of course, I should eat more veggies, grains, protein, etc.. But As a health and fitness concern, what exersizes can I do to tone my stomach? A flabby stomach is hardly a sign of good health. Thanks
Try to do cardio. There's something called interval training that you could do if you run, job, or even walk. Interval training is like a 3 minute warm up walking, then for 30 seconds you jog, then you rest by walking for a minute and a half. That helps burn fat, which would help with the flab. If you don't want to do interval training, you can just do cardio exercises like jogging, biking, and the elliptical by themselves. All of those will burn calories, get your heart rate up and burn fat.
After doing cardio try using a stability ball. I'm a huge fan of stability balls. You can do a variety of things with a stability ball like crunches to push ups. Even regulars crunches would help tone your stomach after you've burned some fat. Pilates is also good for toning your stomach. I know a few people who swear by pilates, so who knows? You'll find what work out you like best. All of these work though.

15/f. Sophomore.
I took the PSAT about a week ago. There was only critical thinking/reading, math, and I'm not sure what the other section was called, but it was like grammer and choosing the right word. Are these the only subjects on the SAT? What about science? History?
On the math test, there was multiple choice, and then there was fill in. It was if you missed any math that wasn't multiple choice, it wouldn't count agaist you. How can it not count? What's the point of it?
One last question. What's a good score to get? A bad one? How many is it out of?
Any answers appreciated.
Thanks!!
On the SAT Test there are three parts Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. All three of those add to 2400 (perfect score).
Sciences, history (global and US History), and even foriegn languages are not on the SAT. They are on something called the SAT II which is somewhat like the SAT. There's basically a SAT II for everything- there's a SAT II in literature, and math. An example is there's an SAT II for biology, and SAT II for Spanish, an SAT II for world history. List goes on and on. The SAT II is like a specific subject test, instead of a reasoning test like the SAT.
If you don't fill in an answer, they just omit it meaning you don't gain or lose any points. The point is, if you don't really understand the question or are trying to guess an answer but are having a tough time, it's better to move on from that one question than waste time there. So if you had enough time you would go back to that question and try to answer. Make sense? In case there wasn't any time left, they'd just not use that question and omit it.
The best score you can get on one section of the SAT is 800. A perfect score for the whole SAT would be a 2400. Usually it depends on the person for a range of what a good score is. 600's are typically a really good score for each part though. Even getting a score in the 500's for a section is pretty good too (like 550). Also when you look at colleges they give you a rough range of what their incoming freshmen got on their SATs. It's a better judge in range for what you'd want to get on your SATs to get into a specific college.
Since you're a sophomore you might want to try to start studying for the SAT from now, so in case of anything you could boost your score points.
There's a website called www.collegeboard.com which gives you a good look on the SAT, SAT II, and even colleges. You might want to look at that to get a better idea of everything.

I have alot of acne (at least I think it is acne) in the top of my chest. It is really annoying because I cant wear any low cut tops or anything. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this?
Buy a body wash that has salicylic acid. I know Neutrogena has one, that's the one that I used and it worked. Also Proactiv has a deep pore cleanser body wash that contains salicylic acid. Basically any body wash that contains salicylic acid would be good, since salicylic acid prevents pores from clogging up, which stops acne formation.
I know this totally sounds weird, but you know those acne pads? Clearasil makes a maximum strength acne pads, which contains salicylic acid. I use these a lot for acne on body parts. All you do is rub the cotton pad with the salicylic acid on the part of your body that has acne and it clears it up. Usually the maximum strength pad takes 3 days for you to start to see a visible difference.
Any one of these should work for you. Pads or body wash. Hope this helps. :)
Okay so on Wednesday I have pictures at the very end of the day. I want to straighten my hair, but by the time I have pictures, my hair won't be at all straight anymore, because of humidity and everything. How do some girls have pin straight hair all through the day? What can I use for my hair to stay straight?
Thanks!
You're defintely going to need to use a serum or cream that has anti-frizz which will help with the humidity. I use Phyto products, since I honestly think they work the best. My hair use to get super frizzy before I started using Phyto from the humidity, and now it's a lifesaver to me for my hair.
Sephora sells Phyto and some things average around $25 - maybe $30 depending on the size of the product.
If you don't want Phyto, there's a ton of products out there on the market that'll help with frizz. I sometimes use John Frieda Frizz-Ease hair serum if I run out of Phyto.
