I just bought my first car, but I've never even done anything with a car before. I got my license and that's about it for my whole experience with vehicles. Anyway, I know my dad has his truck warm up before he goes anywhere in the winter. I don't know if he does this so the interior is warmer for him to sit in or if it has to do with the car needing to be warmed up so it doesn't break. So, do I need to make time to warm my car up in the morning before driving to school or can I just hop in and go? It's a 1999 model so it's kind of old and used too so I really don't want to mess it up right away. K Thanks
If he's warming up his vehicle to protect the engine, it's unnecessary with today's oil additives and engine designs.
My 91 and 92 chevrolets both had this thing called a heat stove. What this did was pull radiant heat off of the exhaust manifold and suck it into the air intake to help the engine warm up. On my 2001 chevrolet, there is a system that runs warm coolant around the throttle body to warm up the air going into the engine.
Way back in the day (WAY back, like 1930), there wasn't such a thing as 10W30 oil. You just had 30 weight detergent or non-detergent oil. The "W" in 10W30 oil means "winter". It's an additive that the oil companies add to the oil that keeps it a liquid even at extremely low temperatures. With today's modern engine oil, your car wont be damaged if you don't warm it up under reasonable conditions.
However, one thing you don't want to do if your engine is cold hotdog it. If your engine is cold and you all of a sudden want to really get on the pedal, you could crack your block.
I wouldn't tell him this because alot of people are really set in their ways, but unless he's wanting to warm the car up for the heater, he's just wasting gas.

i tried unlocking my car with the keychain button and it didnt work. it's not the battery of the thing cause after i manually unlocked my car i hit the lock button on the door and it didnt go either.
does this mean my car died? or is there only a problem with the lock system?
(i havent tried starting my car yet)
If your battery is good in your remote and your car, it's most likely going to be a blown fuse for your power locks. Depending on what kind of vehicle you have, the fuse block will either be underneath the dashboard or in the engine bay. there should be some kind of label that will say which fuse is which. For example, power locks may be PWRLCK or something of that nature. Depending on what type of fuse it is, you may be able to look inside it to see if it is blown. If you're not sure if it's blown, get a new fuse to compare it to.

i've been talking to this guy from craigslist, who's got an 85 camaro for sale. he's asking for 2000 for it. he said that it has no ac, or heater, and needs new vacuum hoses. he said he's got the vacuum hoses, just hasnt had the time to hook them up. i thought that he was asking a reasonable price for it, considering what's wrong with it. but i wanna know how hard is it to fix the ac and heater? what all do you have to do? is it expensive? would i have to buy new parts? i'm going thursday to go look at it and see if it's worth buying.
also, if anyone could tell me little things to look for when i'm looking at it to see if it's worth buying, that'd be great! i know nothing about cars! :) thanks so much
I'm in the auto parts business and I'll tell you that you can get one of a newer year for the same amount of money that needs no work whatsoever.
Save your money this time.
As a general price guide, I recommend Kelly Blue Book @ www.kbb.com
In my opinion, this is a general guide, not a car price Bible. There are some cars values that are inflated.

I have a 1987 Chevy G20 with a 4 barrel 400. It just started dying when i start to come to a stop or slow down to turn. It will not usually restart for about 30 to 40 minutes after it dies, just keeps cranking! I have changed the fuel filter. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!! I have 4 children that ride in this van and dont want something to happen because I break down in an intersection or major road! PLEASE HELP!!
A couple of years ago, I bought a 1991 GMC sonoma. It's basically the exact same vehicle. The guy I bought it from let it sit up for about five years because he was having the same problem where it would drive for a little while and then not start up again for a while. I though to myself, no problem, it's not doing this to me. Well i got overconfident and drove it down the highway and sure enough, it died on me and would not start back. I pulled into a service station where some smart alec mechanics said it was the fuel pump and they would gladly replace it for 400+ dollars.. I was like HECK NO MAN. I got my grandfather to pick me up and take me back to the truck and start it up about an hour later.
sorry about all that backstory. It wound up being the distributor for me. It was corroded completely beyond use. I would consider the distributor to be a prime suspect, but I can't diagnose your vehicle. If you or someone you know is mechanically inclined, you *could* take the distributor cap off and see if there is any corrosion. It's very likely that there will be. Also, I would go ahead and replace the ignition coil whether the distributor is bad or not. It's a common maintenance item on those older Chevrolets.

my mazda wont get a spark from the coil is has no ditributor how come?
My friend's Mazda 5 protege had the same problem and it wound up being a crankshaft sensor. I'm not saying that this is your problem, but i would consider it a prime suspect.

my car keeps dying. Sometimes it dyes when I am at a stop light or sign. I don't know what the problem is. Can you help me?
There are TONS of things this can be. I know that's not what you want to hear. It depends on what kind of vehicle it is. For my dad's honda civic, it wound up being an 02 sensor. We found this out by getting a scanner and connecting it to the 0BDII port under the dashboard. I don't recommend just changing out your 02 sensor right away, but If you have a check engine light, i recommend you go somewhere that scans the vehicles on board computer for free. That's if your vehicle has an onboard computer. Older vehicles don't have any onboard diagnostics and all the adjustments are mechanical. Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts used to do this for free. I'm not sure if they still do.

so say i needed to borrow my boyfriends car. he has state farm car insurance that is under both his parents name. say i borrowed his car and i got pulled over.. would i get in trouble because my name is not on the insurance? or does it not matter because the car is still insured?
It really depends. In some instances, as long as the car has insurace, you're good. It doesn't matter whose name it is under. I have a friend who was pulled over for going way over the speed limit in someone else's car and they didn't even ask for insurance. I'm not listed on my parent's insurance card and I've been pulled over twice.

I want a truck when i get my license. I dont want a huge one, or a small one. I want a medium sized truck. Something built in the USA. And i want it to be one of those trucks that wouldn't be squashed in an accident-something strong/sturdy. Right now im thinking about something from Chervolet,GMC,or Ford. Right now mainly Chevys'.
Any advice is helpful.
Thanks in advance.
i would definitely recomment chevrolet or gmc. i have a 1/2 ton S-10 that is as old as i am and runs almost like new. it seems like there are alot more old chevys than fords on the road...

Just wondering if anyone thinks its possible to put twin turbo in a 4 cylinder
It's possible, but you'd be putting alot of pressure on your engine with two turbines. A four cylinder can only take so much. What kind of 4 cylinder is it? A Honda?. Engineered correctly, you can make it as powerful as a v-6.

How much would it cost to get my maxima painted black? And how much would it cost to get a body kit installed and painted.
It can cost anywhere from 300 dollars up for the paint. And if you want the really cool paint, then it'll cost a bit more. http://www.bodykits.com/BodyKits/Nissan/NissanMaxima/Nissan_Maxima-Body-Kits.html here is a link to some body kits for your car, i just dont know what model year your car is...Ebay is cool too...http://search.ebay.com/body-kits-maxima_W0QQfkrZ1QQfnuZ1QQfromZR8

I have a Toyota Minolta(sponsored) race car that I am using in endurance races. Since it is more than 1000 horsepower, the gas mileage isn't that great. It is a middle-engine, rear wheel drive monster of a car. Heres the problem: My rear tires are wearing out much faster than my front tires, i know with it being rear wheel drive that it is prone to doing this, but is there a way to prevent it? Should i increase the downforce on the rear wing or would that just cause more problems? Advice please.
Adding more downforce to the rear will reduce oversteer. In doing this, your rear tires should last longer.

What does asl stand for?
ASL is short for "Autobacs Sports Car Laboratories CO." Gran Turismo finally paid off.

Ok, I have an 85 Daihatsu Charade.. It has done 180k kms. Recently (during night only) it's been shutting itself down, the mechanic says its because the oil fumes are going through the engine and it doesn't like breathing it. So I was wondering what are some easy, fast ways to reduce or eliminate these fumes?(FYI It's only during the night that I have this problem)
Also, My alternator is only putting 13ish Volts to the battery (No where near enough). How can I get it pumping out more voltage? thanks.
You might just have to get a new alternator. I had to put one in my truck just recently. It could be you need new filters; oil, air, ect.

Here is the thing i have this really nice lowered blue s-10 ( i have posted other things on here b4) but anyways my mom says that i can't drive it in the snow cause it isn't save and that my brother has a friend that will trade me cars and his is a volkswagon golf hatchback, which isn't that good of a looking car but it is safer. I really like my truck tho and i was planning on painting it and suping it up more and now i don't know if i should trade cars and be safer or keep my truck. help i am not sure what i should do? thanks for anyhelp
I have an S-10, and an S-10 is much safer than a Golf hatchback. I think you should raise the suspension back up on the truck, then see what she says.
I wouldn't drive a Volkswagon Golf in the snow....

d oyu know of any stop leak that does not take 750 miles until it starts to work cause ive tried every kind and each of them say 750 miles + until it starts to even work on the tranny and im only 16 and dont have lisence so the car sits there for awhile, know of any?
Well, if you knew where it was leaking out, you could use JB weld. Also, I found some stop-leak that will work in 250 miles check it out:

Ok here is the problemo, since i bought my car February 25, 2004 iva had a major transmission leak and ive done everything i can to fix it, the problem is i dont know where the leak is, i dont know if its from the gasket, the pan, or the transmission its self(if its from the transmission im gunna shoot meh self) anyways, ive replaced the gasket TWICE, and looked carefully at the pan and there are no leaks, now i did strip one screw hole in the transmission but it was leaking before that so it was not that, anyways, if your gunna try to act cool and answer with some smart comment just dont waste your time cause im not one that cares for that stuff, if you can help me thanks alot.
Try transmission stop-leak. You can buy this at any typical auto-parts store. If it keeps leaking, then you will know it wasn't the transmission.
