Car shutsdown

Question Posted Wednesday March 2 2005, 11:08 am

Ok, I have an 85 Daihatsu Charade.. It has done 180k kms. Recently (during night only) it's been shutting itself down, the mechanic says its because the oil fumes are going through the engine and it doesn't like breathing it. So I was wondering what are some easy, fast ways to reduce or eliminate these fumes?(FYI It's only during the night that I have this problem)

Also, My alternator is only putting 13ish Volts to the battery (No where near enough). How can I get it pumping out more voltage? thanks.

With the weak alternator, and the fact that it only dies when you have your headlights on... It might be time for a new mechanic. ;-)

Battery shop should be able to run a free diagnostic for you.

There is a couple of things you could do, to eliminate a lot of the oil fumes get a new oil filter. And you also probably need a new altenator. it shouldnt cost too much for a used alternator.

You might just have to get a new alternator. I had to put one in my truck just recently. It could be you need new filters; oil, air, ect.

I will admit upfront that I'm not a car expert... but since you said oil fumes, and it only happens at night...

...being the chemist that I am, I immediately thought this: at night, the air is cooler, so in general, your car is cooler, the air going through your car is cooler, thus cooling the engine more effectively. Oil fumes are still oil, just vaporized, so what is likely happening is that the oil could well be condensing in the engine at night, mucking things up. So either the engine needs to be vented differently, or a filter needs placed to remove the oil from the air to keep it from forming a condensate.

If anything, I'm curious to see if I'm on the right track with my guess - hopefully someone will see your question that really knows cars and be able to tell me if I'm full of it, and also give you more concrete advice. ;)
