about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

23/F

So basically I'll start off with I was with my boyfriend for 5 years and when we broke up in June I felt so sad i have always had depression and self harmed myself but no one knew Fourth of July weekend I felt the saddest I have ever felt and looked at my medicine cabinet and said what am I going to take to kill myself I thought about death every day and thought it was normal. I talked to my doctor and she put me on zoloft. I have never felt better until yesterday. I met this new guy and I finally moved on to my ex we had sex twice both with condoms. The only skin on skin action was us in the shower but we never physically did it until after with a condom. The next day I had an outrageous yeast infection and I found out yesterday I have Herpes. I have only been with 2 people and this is what happens...the guy I slept with is in denial and said he doesn't have anything but maybe he does now because I gave it to him! He was with his ex for 2 years and he said they are both fine. I just don't understand how this happened to me and now I am back in my hole where I don't want to live anymore. I feel broken and sad and nobody is going to want me.

Symptoms of Herpes might not appear for months or even years after being affected. Not everyone experiences any straight away, so it possible that the new man has it but didn't know and as you developed the symptoms the next day that does sound the most likely. His ex could also have it but they could both be asymptomatic, who knows which of them had it first! They both need to be tested and you need to stop beating yourself up about this. It is completely normal for someone to be in denial when it comes to STD's, no one likes to be held responsible, even unwittingly.

Get yourself treated, drop him a message to tell him he could have had it for years without knowing and suggest that he and his ex get tested. Then start looking forward to the future. There is someone out there who will want to be with you.

About 2 weeks ago, I had surgery on my bum. It's all stitched up and I'm on antibiotics.

My mom however, was sick with a virus or something like a cold a couple days ago.

I was fine this morning but like all of a sudden I feel nauseus. I made some toast which always helps when my stomach is upset. But I can't eat it. I feel like if I eat it, I'll get sick.

I started thinking, wait I'm on Cipro antibiotics so technically I shouldn't really be sick. I've been on Cipro before and never had a problem. I already have an appointment to get my stitches out on Tuesday.

Could it be I caught the cold or whatever my mom had or could it be the anitbiotics making me sick? I'm puzzled, if I still feel sick by the time my next dose. I'm going to stop taking them.

Don't stop taking the antibiotics, you're on them for a very good reason. Call your doctor for advice, explaining what has happened.
Good luck

I'm 16 and have had a yeast infection since I was at least 7 or 8. I've tried monistat, creams, and a prescribed medication. I wan to know how rare this is. How else an I treat it? Can it cause infertility? Does it reduce sexual simulation? Any additional information.

Yeast infections, Candida, are quite common and can usually be treated with over the counter medications or prescriptions; however, occasionally there will be a persistent one that is hard to shift or you can develop a recurring one. It may also affect different parts of the body and occurs when the natural 'bad' bacteria we all have overwhelms the 'good' bacteria. It affects men as well as women and can be passed during sexual contact, and so, can be passed back and forth. I'm assuming, due to your references, that it is vaginal in nature. These infections love the dark, moist environment provided here.

Firstly, you need to ensure that you are extremely careful with hygiene 'down below'. Always wipe your bottom front to back to avoid fecal transference. Secondly, whenever possible, wash the area after every time you've had a bowel movement, again, front to back. Wear cotton undies, not man made fibres, as cotton allows the area to breathe. Wear trousers and tights (pantyhose) as little as possible for the same reason. You need to get as much air to the area as you can.

Diet is also a big contributor to persistent Candida. The general rule is you need to stay on a special diet one month for every year you've had the problem. ANY slip-ups and you set yourself back. It is a very hard diet to follow and needs a strong sense of willpower to follow as there are always temptations out there. The benefits from following it though will hopefully outweigh the hardships.

There are various acidophilus preparations you can try. These reintroduce healthy bacteria to your body and help with rebalancing. Candida is acidic in nature so all foods that are also acidic make things worse. Avoiding sugar as much as possible should help as it feeds the bad bacteria, you could even find yourself craving sugary products. Now, if you're ready for the list, here goes.

AVOID All sweets including hidden sweeteners in processed foods, such as soups, all fruit and fruit juice. Avoid grains such as prepared flake cereals sprouted grain cereals such as: Amaranth, Buckwheat, Corn, Millet, Rice, Rye, Spelt, Wheat.
Avoid Granola, Pearl barley, Instant oats, Cornmeal, degerminated Hominy grits, degerminated Microwave popcorn Blue corn meal
Pasta Pasta is flour and water, the flour may be white bread flour and it may be durum flour made from semolina. All types of noodles are made from the same base and they should all be cut out of the diet, with Bufin, the Japanese noodles, Ramen instant noodles, farina, semolina and white flour noodles and pastas.
Baked goods and Breads Avoid all cakes, pastries, cookies doughnuts or other processed baked food containing sugar. This list includes white bread, or any bread containing wheat, which includes parathas, nanas bread, pita bread, white flour tortillas, wheat dough tortillas, sourdough, or any other ethnic bread made from wheat. Mochi the sweet unleavened bread made from brown rice should be avoided.
Legumes Avoid beans and peas with sweeteners, bean sprouts, tempeh which a type of fermented tofu, tofu and textured vegetable protein.
Nuts & Seeds Coconut, Peanuts, Pistachios, Walnuts
Dairy Products Buttermilk, Soymilk (sweetened), All kinds of cheeses, Cottage cheese, Kefir, Milk, Sour cream Creme fraiche Sweetened yogurt.
Fruit Never eat dried fruit, and when you start the Candida cleanse diet it is best to avoid all fruit because of the fructose the sugar it contains. Once you have eliminated the current Candida infection then eat fruit with a moderate amount of sugar. Low sugar fruits are apples, grapefruit, melon, and strawberries.
Beverages Alcohol, Cereal beverages, Coffee both regular and decaffeinated Fruit juices Soft drinks including the diet soft drinks. Processed tea drinks such as lemon tea. All fruit teas, Black tea
Condiments and Sauces: No Ketchup or catsup or any type of tomato sauce Cream sauces such as Alfredo Steak sauce, NO Capers, Dried or powdered garlic, Miso, Dried or powdered onion, Pickles or chutneys, which include anything made with sugar and distilled vinegar. Spices, Distilled vinegar Sauerkraut.
Proteins: Meat products such as beef chicken or pork have added antibiotics and hormones and they should be avoided if you want to eat meat then eat free-range organic products. Smoked meats such as bacon, sausages and salami products such as pepperoni have added sugar and should be cut out of your diet.
Vegetables:
Avoid - Beetroot Canned tomatoes Carrots Cucumber skins, Mushrooms (all types), Potato skins, Prepared soups, Canned tomatoes.

Now the good news on what you can eat.

Beans, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumbers Green pepper, Kale, Lettuce Onion, radishes, Parsley, Peas, Rocket or arugulla Spinach, Tomatoes.

I have included American foods as well as I don't know where you live.

Antibiotics are bad news for Candida sufferers. So if you have any conditions that really necessitate you taking them on a regular basis, you need to try to balance out the effect on the yeast infection as quickly as possible when the course has finished. Talk to your doctor to see if there is a lower dose you could take or an alternative. If you have a compromised immune system this can also promote the growth of 'bad' bacteria. Eat unsweetened, plain yoghurt and you can also apply it to the affected area. Exercise will boost your immune system.

Pure garlic or garlic capsules are great for fighting Candida, swallowing it or inserting a garlic clove every few hours, probably when you're not going anywhere for a while would be best! It's a natural antibiotic and it hates Candida. You can also try apple cider vinegar, one cup in a bath of hot water. Don't apply directly to the skin, it will hurt more than you could imagine! Do not use any other type of vinegar. Drink LOTS of water, non chlorinated and preferably use a filtration system. You may need to take multi-vitamins whilst on this diet to ensure you are fully covered, but check that there are no added sugars.

Birth control tablets can keep the problem going, so if you are sexually active, talk to your doctor about alternatives. Don't douch or use feminine deodorants, these make it worse.

If this problem has caused you to develop vaginitis, a thick white or yellowish odourless discharge, it can cause itching in the area and burning or pain during intercourse, so yes, it can be a problem here.

The really bad news is that left untreated it has been indicated in causing infertility and female related problems. Your doctor will be able to talk you through all this. If you do have a sexual partner, it is very important that he is treated at the same time or you will never be rid of it.

I hope this has helped, a rather longer answer than I suspect you expected, but it is a complex issue.

Good luck with this problem and I do hope you successfully rid yourself of it permanently.

Those pills (vitro) or whatever do you know if they'll work for someone who has had chlamydia in the past. I have a boyfriend and weve been trying to get pregnant for awhile and nothing works. I know it has something to do with my past STD but is there anyway I cant fix it?

Without knowing the exact name of the pills it's difficult to do any research; however, I found a few websites that have said that the chances of pregnancy can be affected by Clamydia.

You really do need to see a doctor to get a proper diagnosis of your chances and for specific help in this area. Due to the huge increase in Clamydia sufferers, 1 in 10, a lot of work is going into this at the moment.

I've included a link with general information and tips on this subject but you really do need medical guidance. I wish you well for a future pregnancy.

ok so like a week and a half ago my vagina itched but then after a couple days it went away so i thought i was fine. but now i have this horrible pain in my stomach and its really sore and sometimes feels like cramps but usually is just this terrible pain. ive had this pain for over 3 days now!! last night i used some medicine that cures yeast infections and i kno it wouldnt completely sure it the first night but it should have made the pain feel at least a little better but it still hurts really bad and now my back hurts too. i feel really sick and im so annoyed i cant figure out what this is. i looked online and i think it might be a urinary track infection but im not sure. can anyone tell me what it sounds like because it hurts a lot. i know i should go see a doctor but i just moved here a couple days ago and we are trying to unpack my house and we dont know any doctors here yet. its not like a stomach ache like i'm gonna be sick its just like its really sore and hurts A LOT and sometimes the pain makes me feel nauseous. thank you soooo much!!!

Find a doctor, don't wait any longer. If it's an infection, it needs to be treated - now!

If you've been in pain that long it's highly unlikely to get better without medication.

It sounds like it could be a kidney infection, if it is, they are painful and, left untreated, can cause permanent damage. Even if it is not this, you still need to examined by a doctor asap.

Go and find a doctor.

Can an extremely soft bed give you back problems?

A bed should fully support you whilst you are moving around in your sleep. If it does not do this by being too soft, it is entirely possible it could give you back problems. If you are not able to replace the bed or the mattress, you could try putting a plank or two of wood under the mattress to give you the support you need. It's not ideal and not possible with all beds but it may help until you can get a replacement.

I want to know if a yeast infection is really dangerous and if it can kill you. I have had a yeast infection for the last seven years.
It goes away w/ my menstrual and then comes back. I do not take birth control and I am not a diabetic. I have tried all the creams and diflucan also. Nothing worked. And right now I don't have med. insurance. Will the local hospital treat me? I don't want the infection to spread to my intestines. I am 28 years old and I am afraid of this.

As Razhie says, you do need to see a doctor about this. It's not dangerous so much as debilitating in the long run.

In the meantime, try avoiding sugar, spicy foods, coffee, tea and onions. You can also try acidophilus and aloe vera tablets or juice, all of which you can get from a health shop. These introduce healthy bacteria back into the system, stabalises the levels and helps to counteract the yeast overgrowth.

It is a sign of an inbalance so you do need to look at the causes and any underlying health issues. Dealing with those should help to rid your body of the yeast infection. It is very unlikely to go away without help.

I understand that medical insurance can be an issue in the US, but this is something that you really need to try to resolve, for your own sake.

During test and before it i get really stresssed and sick. I'm not a very immuned or strong girl, meaning i get sick(flu) easily. What are some things i can do to build up my immunity and relax me during stress time?

Take echinacea tablets and eat garlic to boost your immune system, schedule in time to relax, even if it's just a soak in the bath. Go to bed at a reasonable time, eat sensibly and drink lots of fluids. Fish oils have been found to boost the brains abilities to function, so you could try that as well. Ensure you wash your hands before putting anything in your mouth to avoid contamination from germs. Plan your revising so that you know what you are doing and when. Being organised can relieve some of the tension.

Stress lowers the immune system making you more vulnerable to infection. By taking more care of yourself at these times can help to avoid a build up that affects your health.

Good luck with your tests.

I'm a teenage girl- and for my whole life i've always been tired no matter what. I drink coffee every morning and I get all my nutrients b/c i eat right and take vitamins... I also work out whenever I can.

What's up with me?

Teenagers do need a lot of sleep, but having said that, if you're eating and sleeping properly, it may be worth getting yourself checked out by a doctor as you may be deficient in something. There are various possibilites for your tiredness and no one on here is going to be able to diagnose you without a medical degree. It may be nothing but never take chances with your health.

Okay well i have bronchitus (sp?) and my doctor prescribed me with an albuterol inhaler. But it makes me cough soooooo much, and it hurts so bad because of my sore throat. Does anyone have any advice?

Thank you :).

As it's a powder filled capsule, have you been shown the correct way to inhale it? If not, this could be causing your coughing and sore throat. Having the bronchitis can also make this feel worse.
If you're not already doing this, when you have to take the inhaler, sit up straight, keep your neck held high, chin slightly up and take a short, sharp breath in with the powder, then hold your breath for at least ten seconds, a bit longer if you can. Then exhale slowly. The faster you can inhale, the less likely the powder is going to stick to your throat.
Not everyone can get on with a powder inhaler, so if you are still having problems, speak to your doctor about trying a different one. There are lots to choose from.
I hope you feel better soon, bronchitis is a nasty thing to suffer from.

Lately, I have been extremely thirsty. I do not know what is wrong with me! I weight a normal weight. I thought it might be early signs of diabetes - but i wasn't sure. I know that none of you can diagnose me, but any opinions?

thanks!

and by the way, my sister and dad both have diabetes - the one where they need to have sugar at certain points of the day or something!

If you are concerned, have a family history of diabetes and/or have other symptoms, you need to see a doctor for a test. In some areas you can have a finger prick test at a pharmacy.
This isn't something you should delay on. If you do have it, you can start on a suitable diet and treatment sooner. If you don't have it, it will stop you worrying about it.
Good luck.

i have a heaert condition called SVT. thats the abreviated version i think the long one is Supraventricular Tachycardia

and it makes my heart beat double fast somtimes and makes me dizzy. there is a proecdure to get rid of it, and it burns off one of the things that maks your heart beat because i have two of them but a normalperson has one. has anyone had this pocedure? i want to get it because this ondition scares me but im also scared of the procedure because they would make me unconcious so if anyone has had thi or any other surgerys or anything done could you please tell me about what its been like? the only medical thing ive ever gotten was stitches and i dont know if its wortth it

thank you so much!

I have a niece with the same condition. It is very scary for her when she has an episode, and for her family. Her heart rate can go up to 220 beats per minute. She is scheduled to have surgery as well.
They have to put you out for the procedure so that you don't feel anything. As with all surgery there is going to be an element of risk, but I would say the greater risk is in not having this seen to. When your heart is beating that fast, it is being put under enormous strain, and it won't be able to keep that up for ever.
If you have this done you have every chance of living normal life with no more problems than the average person. If you have doubts, speak to your doctor and they can walk you through it and hopefully calm any fears you have.
I have included a web site that tells you more about it.
I wish you the best of luck in whatever decision you take.

I have been taking asthma medicine, but last night i had an asthma attack at 3 am.
They are the scariest thing ever, is there any way to deal with them or make them less scary or even prevent them?
Sometimes i cant go back to sleep after one, or i sweat or get scared of having another one.
Thank you

14/f

I know what you mean, I've had asthma for 36 years and it can still be scary to have an attack.

The first thing I would suggest is to make sure you are on the right medication and dosage. If it is being controlled correctly, you should not be getting attacks unless you have an infection or been exposed to an irritant. It sounds as though you need to see an asthma specialist if you have not already done so.

Check your room for irritants, are your pillows made from feathers, do you have wool in your room etc, these can cause allergic reactions leading to an asthma attack.

Not being able to breathe is one of the most frightening of experiences. Some methods I have found that worked for me are:

Counting your breaths in and out and gradually trying to slow them down, (people can hyperventilate when they are having an attack, which makes things worse).

Don't lie down during and after recovering from one, prop yourself up with pillows, it should make it easier to breathe.

Enlist a parent to sit with you until you have got over one and gone back to sleep, being alone at this time can make you feel a lot worse.

Experiment with different climates in your bedroom if you can. A dehumidifier may benefit you, or you could be an asthmatic that is helped with warm steam.

Listen to some soothing music or try to read, anything that will distract you without using energy.

I hope this helps and you are able to find methods of controlling it more. Let me know if you need any more information. Take care and sleep well.

13/f i had surgery like a month ago because i had a cyst in my left ovary. i am feeling some pain and i really need help. i didnt tell my parents because i did that before i was gonna have surgery and they rushed me to the emergency room...so i dont wanna worry them, but should i... i guess what i'm asking for is some advice on health so if theres any doctors or nurses out there PLEASE help me!

Thanks in advance

Parents are there to do the worrying and to look out for you, it's in the job description. You really need to tell them you are in pain. It may be nothing but do you honestly want to take that risk? No one here is going to be able to tell you if there is something wrong, even if they are qualified, you need to be checked over in person by a doctor.
Please tell your parents you are in pain as soon as you can? After all, the sooner you tell them, the quicker it will be sorted out, then you can stop worrying and the pain can be dealt with.
Hope that helps and the best of luck.

alright so lately.. i've been having like serious issues with my stomach and stuff. Does anybody know a website where like you could type in symptoms, and then they give you a possible list of what you have? Because I can't figure it out. And I just went to the doctor about 2 months ago for this.. but it showed up as nothing, but it just seems to be getting worse and worse.. but i'm too scared to ask my mom to take me back again. Especially since my family doesn't have a lot of money since my dad died.. so like i think that if i knew what it could possibly be, then i could like know that it's not horrible. So can somebody PLEASE help me find a website that can let you do that? Or like if somebody knows a bunch of medical stuff, let me know please!! thankssomuch!

I'm so sorry to hear you are having such a rough time. You've had a lot to deal with and if you try to be strong for everyone else, something is going to give.
If the doctor has given you the all clear on your symptoms, has the possibility of a psychosomatic illness been mentioned? This does NOT mean you are imagining it or going mad etc. These illnesses are very real, brought on by an overload of stress, grief, life changing events etc, and generally hit a persons most vulnerable area. They are as real as any 'normal' illness and can make you feel terrible. They just don't tend to show up on tests.
Now, I'm not saying you do have this, it's just one of the possibilities. You really do need to go back to your doctor, I understand about the money problem, but your mum needs to know, and it's up to her to make the decisions about finance, surely she wouldn't want you to suffer? Whether it is this or something else the doctor hasn't found, he will be the best person to see. There are a lot of illnesses out there that can share symptoms, it would be easy to misdiagnose on a website and worry yourself further.
I have included a couple of websites on this particular illness to give you an idea about what it is if you don't know, but I will repeat, it has to be your doctor that diagnoses what the problem is.
I hope this helps and that you feel better soon.

First off, I'm very sick. I've had stomach problems for 7 months. Today, I almost passed out many times. I went to the doctor and it turns out that my hemoglobin levels are down from 14 to 12.3. But my question.. When I got my finger pricked at the doctor, I bled everywhere and it was hard to stop it. Now, my finger is black where it was pricked and it hurts really bad. It's weird. Could it have something to do with my hemoglobin level being down, or should I be worried about that too?

I'm really sorry to hear that you are ill. I have no diagnosis for you, but if you try to stay calm, get plenty of rest, eat sensibly, no fizzies or burgers etc, that may help you feel a little better whilst you are waiting for the results to come back. Put an ice pack on your finger, that may help to ease the pain, it quite possibly is all tied in with the haemagloblin levels. I expect the doctor will get back to as quickly as he can and start treating you.
Hope that helps and feel better soon.
