I'm 17 and female.

So I'm hooked on coffee! Like I'll have a minimum of 5 a day.
However I am trying not to take coffee anymore as the caffeine in it stunts growth (and I wanna grow more!) and can give you cancer and bad teath etc.
What would anyone recoomend for stopping-because I just can't help it! (link)
Hello,

Well, first, you want to figure out what it is about coffee that you like so much. Is it the caffeine? Or is it just the flavour?

Although some aspects of coffee are bad for you (teeth, caffeiene etc), coffee has alot of benefits. In regards to it's carcenogenic properties, it was listed by the WHO as a "2B" carcinogen. This is in the same league as picked vegetables giving you cancer. Infact, according to the report, working as a hairdresser is more likely to give you cancer than coffee. According to the WHO report, coffee has been linked to bladder cancer. On the flip side, coffee has been associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer and colon cancer.

But it's good that you want to cut down. Too much of something is never good. Once you realise why you are addicted, it's easier to cut down. If it's just the taste of it, you can start off by adding less coffee to your cup/machine. If it's the caffeine, you should maybe try decaff and then slowly ween yourself off.

The key however, is to do it slowly. Keep a diary, and write down when you drink coffee, what time, and strength. Which cup of coffee could you not live without? For me, it's the first of the day. If this is the case, then drink this cup, and drink something else throughout the day. This could be water, milk, or tea (which I will discuss later).

Also, be sure to keep drinking water throughout the day. It's good for you, and will help with cravings.

Then, slowly start to cut down on the number of cups you drink a day.

In regards to an alternative, tea is a great one. It helps to prevent cancer, hydrates you, and is full of antioxidants and other good stuff! There are many websites out there that sell tea, and there are also shops that sell it. It's not as big as coffee in some countries, but in the UK, we drink 165,000,000 cups of the stuff everyday.

Here is a website that specialises in tea. They only ship to the United Kingdom, but at least you can see what they offer, and so you can find what you like. I would recommend an Assam, or an Irish breakfast. They're both strong. Assam is nice and malty, and so closer to coffee:

But long story short, ween yourself off slowly. Aim for 2 cups a day. Drink plenty of water. Distract yourself when you get a craving!

Good luck! :)
