Hi, I wasn't sure which subject to put this under.. but anyhow, I was wondering: is it neccesary to wash cotton fabric before you hand applique it? What are the different types of stitches? I know of the blanket, chain, rickrack, and fence rail stitch. Also, any tips on the easiest ways to hand applique would be helpful. Thanks

From personal experience, I would say the easiest way to applique by hand is to ensure the fabric is stretched out tightly and pin it down. If you can get hold of some, I really reccomend using Bondaweb. It's double sided and sticky and will hold the two pieces of fabric together so you can stitch it without it bunching.

I prefer the blanket stitch when I'm doing it by hand because I find it the easiest and most effective but you might disagree.

I have never washed fabric before stitching it but it could be a good idea as if the fibres were to stretch once it had been finished, it could go out of shape.
