Hi, I call myself Ignatz after Dan Herriman's character in the old "Krazy Kat" comic strip. I'm 44, father of 3, husband to one, crazy about music and books and food and movies and history and martial arts. I've had some wild and crazy times in my life, and I figure I might as well put in some of my perspective.
I promise not to talk down to anyone or make fun,and I promise not to BS anyone. If you're old enough to ask a frank question, you're old enough to get a frank answer. Oh, and if you ask me a question directly, please be patient. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. My life's a bit hectic. :-)

Ok so my school (public) is having a kinda costume dance thing and me and my 10 year old sister are going as punk rockers. My sister dosnt want a girly outfit cause shes a tomboy but I'm good with anything. All answers apreciated! (link)
|
Okay, it kinda depends on the sort of punk you're wanting to be. If you're going for late-70s New York punk look, go with black jeans, black tee-shirt, frizzed-out hair, and either leather or denim jacket. London punk looks involved a lot of red plaid (thanks to designer Adrienne Westwood), black leather or vinyl with a lot of safety pins everywhere, and oddly-dyed hair. There's a website with a lot of info on women in punk at http://www.comnet.ca/~rina/index.html. Take a look at the band photos and see what you think.
Hope this helps.

ok this is really random but yeah. you know those screamo songs where people scream? like the screamo scream? WHILE they are singing? does anyone know how to do that? because i really wanna be a musician. and i want to scream. im 15/f,btw. but yeah. any tips? im welcome to any advice.
thanks. (link)
|
The best source for this vocal technique is a DVD by Melissa Cross, called "The Zen of Screaming" (www.zenofscreaming.com). She's a vocal teacher who specializes in death metal, screamo and metalcore vocal techniques. If you just get up there and scream, you'll ruin your voice. And I mean ruin, to the point of not being able to talk at all.
Hope this helps.

do you know any? like rock bands.. alternative rock and/or maybe indie. not like hiphop, soul, pop, etc. i cant think of any black girls as frontwomen! holy cheese! cause im a black girl and i always imagined that would be cool to do, lol (link)
| |
Check out Skunk Anansie ('90s English band) and Suffrajett. Tracy Chapman also did the whole indie-folk thing in the late '80s and '90s. An organization that might interest you is the Black Rock Coalition (www.blackrockcoalition.org) which promotes rock and indie music by black artists. If you want to front a band, get up there and do it. Follow the lead of Living Colour, Bad Brains, and 24-7 Spyz and rock it so hard people's faces melt.

where can i get a brocade corset? not from hot topic but looks like the ones from there and not online i want one i can wear as a shirt not under a shirt im 14. lol if thats not too much (link)
|
Well, what you're looking for is more precisely a bodice (my wife's best friends are a theatrical costume designer and a bridal designer, gimme a break here). A corset has a lot of stiff plastic or steel boning in it to provide support, and the Hot Topic stuff doesn't have that as far as I know. You'd have to look at shops locally if you don't want to buy on-line.
If you're feeling adventurous, there are any number of websites that have instructions on making bodices. (Definitely cheaper than custom-ordering.)
http://www.sempstress.org/patterns/drafting/bodices.shtml
http://www.elizabethancostume.net/kirtlepat/
The tricky part is getting the proper fit, and reinforcing the seams so they don't come apart on you.
Hope this helps.

I am having a party and we want a really scary movie for it. Any ideas? When we say scary we mean ones that will make us jump alot and have to cling onto another person, or ones that are so freaky that your looking around corners and everything when the movie is done. I dont really like alien or monster movies. Please dont say The Ring, The Ring 2, The Grudge, or any of the Saw movies because we've seen them all and Saw is jsut gore anyways. Thanks alot (link)
|
Nobody mentioned the Blair Witch Project?
Come on, I couldn't sleep for days after watching that thing! I own a copy that I've never unwrapped! If you haven't seen it already, check it out. You'll never go hiking again.

in "I'll Do The Driving" there are the lyrics
"We're out, the jukebox plays "Jumping Jack Flash"
She says "I love Johnny Cash, the man in red"
I don't understand the contradictory of johnny cash/the man in red
who's the man in red? (link)
|
The point of the song is that the girl is completely clueless. "Jumping Jack Flash" is by the Rolling Stones, and Johnny Cash was famous for wearing black exclusively. She misidentifies the artist and the thing that made Johnny Cash distinctive.
Hope this helps.

i wanna try some frech recipes that look really good and i have a familiy that does like trying something new like that.what do i do?i have a bf who loves it when i cook french foods.can you help me please? (link)
|
Just cook them, and don't say that they're French. A lot of common recipes originated in classical French cuisine, and if you keep things simple and recognizable (pork chops that look like pork chops, pot roast, roast chicken,) your family will get over the weirdness factor. The last issue of Cook's Illustrated had a great recipe for poulet en cocotte that should keep everybody happy. And if not, go to your boyfriend's house and cook there.
Hope this helps.

I did this summer camp last year for kids from 5th to 12th grade last year and it was really fun. We did Anything Goes! Anyway, this year, the director wants to do High School Musical *gag*. The thing is not many guys are doing the camp, and most of them are like in 7th grade and can't sing that well. Are there any good musicals that we could do for middle school kids? Please don't say Seusical the Musical or Oklahoma, because the director JUST did those 2 shows at his school. (link)
|
Try "Tomfoolery", which is a revue of Tom Lehrer songs. Very funny, and easy to sing. The "Masochism Tango" should bring the guys out.

for spanish were doing a cooking project and i need a really good recipe thats authentic hispanic food. help please! (link)
| |
"Hispanic" food is a pretty broad term. It covers food from Spain, Portugal, and all of Latin America. You could go with something as simple as black beans and rice or fried plantains, or as complicated as pollo en pibil (chicken in pumpkin-seed sauce). If you really want to impress your teacher, there are some sites with recipes from Medieval and Renaissance Spain. This article http://www.florilegium.org/files/FOOD-SWEETS/3-Span-Sweets-art.html has three desserts from a cookbook published in 1529, and here http://home.earthlink.net/~lilinah/Food/Misc_Hist_Food/AndalusianChicken.html is a recipe from Muslim Spain (c. 1200 or thereabouts). Can't get more Hispanic than that, and you'll certainly stand out from the ones who brought burritos.

Is it illegal, if you are living in a college dorm with a roommate, to set up a voice recorder on your own desk to record what is going on in the room while you are not there?
I really need to know!
I'm talking about a digital voice recorder. I found out my roommate did something illegal and I'm trying to get her for it. I need to know if I can use the recording as legitimate evidence for what she did. (link)
| |
Generally speaking, it is illegal for a law-enforcement agency (police, FBI, CIA) to bug or wiretap someone without a warrant. If you record your roommate without her knowledge or consent, any evidence you obtain could not be used in court. If you're concerned, contact your local police or campus authorities. You could create a lot of problems with your roommate if something goes wrong with your plan.

I am so scared right now. Back on Dec 8th, i lost my virginity but it was more like a rape type thing. I didnt press charges or anything. He DID use protection. I still thought I was pregnant but my period was a few days late. So I took the test and it came out negative. So then on Christmas I got my period. I was happy as hell. On New Years Eve, I moved back home with my crazy mom who i still cant stand, i started school again, I was at the studio more, I changed my job site to a different school with bad kids and also a change in diet and exercise because i am obese and tryin to change my lifestyle. I havent got my period since Christmas. I took another test and it came out Negative again. I did NOT have any signs of spotting or nausea like some of the symptoms. dont have none of that. y breast arent larger just stomache pains when i think that i amp regnant. I asked my friends and 7 out of 8 said im not pregnant, that because of the activity my hormones changed because i had sex and that I am probably stressed. I use to be on birth control but stop Dec 2006. After that my period took it's own course like I had it vday 2007 but didnt get it again til end of April 2007. then it starts skippin weeks and months. Sometimes it just skips a month. But it just skipped 2 months.... I dont know what to think (link)
|
You are definitely not pregnant. If you had your period after the rape, there's no way you could be pregnant now. You are most probably under heavy stress from the other circumstances in your life, and that's throwing off your hormones. If you're concerned about your health, talk to your doctor.
Hope this helps.

Im Catholic, and I need to pick a confirmation saint. If you are catholic, I want to know, how did you pick yours? (I know alot of people pick their own names, but there is no saint with my name.)
I want to pick one that has to do with like, anti-war. See, I strongly beleive that killing is never ok for any reason, so there should never be a good reason for war. So basically, when I make my speech the night I get confirmed, I want to present a strong anti-war message to the audience, you know what I mean? (I almost decided not to get confirmed because I'm furious with the hypocracy of catholics that think the War in Iraq is ok.)
So my question is, basicly, what saint should I choose to give my speech about that fits my views well? (link)

St. Martin of Tours. He was a soldier in the Roman army who refused to fight upon his conversion to Christianity. He refused his pay, and asked to be stood in the front line without armor and weapons rather than fight an invading army. The night before the battle, the invading army negotiated a truce.
He was also famous for his courtesy towards his enemies and towards people who would normally be considered heretics, and for finding peaceful solutions to potentially violent situations.
Here's the Catholic Online article about him:

14f How old do you need to be to get your belly button pierced? I dont want to tell my mom but I want it done. Is there anyway around that?
Could you pierce it yourself? I seen it done in the movie thirteen.. they made it seem easy. (link)
| |
At your age, you'll need your parents' consent. Navel piercings are pretty major body mods, and they can take a long time to heal. There's a risk of infection, as well as an allergic reaction to the jewelry. Look into belly clips: you get the decoration without the parental freakouts. And if you're still enamored of the idea in a few years, you can get pierced on your 18th birthday.

What's the word that means getting very into character, or becoming the character. This is mainly for actors. (link)

You may be thinking of 'method' acting. This refers to Constantin Stanislavsky, an acting teacher in the 1930s. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_acting

my music player deleted from my computer so i had to redownload it . now i dont have any songs to listen to .
do you know any good songs to download ?
rap , country , rock , hip hop . . . everything really ! (link)
|
If you want to avoid the whole copyright issue, search for artists who release their music under Creative Commons licenses. This allows for downloading and sharing of the files, as long as you don't sell them. Get a torrent client like BitTorrent and Google search under "legal torrents"; that'll give you a starting point. Also check out http://creativecommons.org/audio for a listing of websites, record labels and artists that make their music easily available and don't mind if you pass a copy along to your friends.
Hope this helps.

my cousin is getting married in a few weeks, and she's looking for suggestions of good, slow, romantic songs that aren't sad. So far we've come up with two hopefuls.. "All I Ask Of You" from Phantom of the Opera (just seems too cheesy...) or "Falling Slowly" from the movie "Once". Beyond that we're out of ideas. any suggestions? Gratzi! (link)
|
Check out the soundtrack to "Something's Gotta Give". Lots of classics there: Louis Armstrong singing "La Vie en Rose", The Penguins "I Only Have Eyes for You", Eartha Kitt's "Je Cherche Un Homme"... I'd skip the Jack Nicholson attempt at "La Vie en Rose", made me want to clean my ears out with a blowtorch.
Hope this helps.

My husband is a wonderful father and partner. Our child is coming up fast to 2 years old and we have another one on the way. I have just turned 20 years old.
The problem is, is that from the instant our son was born, he just got it and well...I didn't, and I still don't.
Is just knowing that I will inevitably get things wrong, but as long as I make sure the children know that whatever I do is done with the best of intentions and that I would do anything for them enough? I'm just scared of seeming second-rate.
Any help is more than appreciated.
Thank you for your time. (link)
|
As a father of two myself, I can heartily agree with what's been said so far. It's okay to occasionally make mistakes with your kids, as long as you're honest about them. Admit the mistake, apologize, and move on.
You'll get your kids eventually. Pay attention to them, figure out what they like and don't like, and above all get down and play with them. They love that. Read to them, put random objects on your head, do whatever strikes your fancy. One thing you'll never hear somebody say is "my mom played with me too much when I was little." Definintely trust your husband's instincs on things, and talk to him.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone know any Nazi Films? (link)

The classic Nazi propaganda film is "Triumph of the Will", directed by Leni Riefenstahl.

Hey, I was going to audition for my school's talent show [I've made it for the past two years] and, I can't think of a good song to sing. I'm looking for a more maybe rock song, or maybe like, a really soft pretty song. I'm an alto, but I can do soprano pretty well, if that makes a difference. Thanks! :] (link)
|
Check out the album "Lady in Satin" by Billie Holliday. It's a jazz classic, easily available on filesharing websites like IsoHunt. Also check out Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat": it's an album of Leonard Cohen songs she did years ago. It's also available through IsoHunt. I'd personally recommend "Song of Bernadette".
Hope this helps.

I'm a new christian for like 2 1/2 months now, and i need/want a new book to read that talks about god and how to become more like him, do you have any good books i could read? i'm 24, female by the way. thanks. jennifer (link)

There's a whole bunch, by some really good authors. C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity" is a classic, as is his "Screwtape Letters". Also check out Robert Farrar Capon (I personally recommend "Supper of the Lamb"), Madeline l'Engle's Crosswicks Journals (most of her fiction has religious themes as well), Fr. Matthew Fox's "Original Blessing" and "Meditations with Meister Eckhart", St. Teresa of Avila's "Interior Palace", St. John of the Cross' mystical poems "Spiritual Canticle" and "Dark Night of the Soul", Julian of Norwich's "Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love", Amy-Jill Levine's "The Misunderstood Jew"... on and on and on.
Oh yeah, and the Bible. :)
Hope this helps.
