about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

Why do sleeping pills have warning labels that state :'Caution: May Cause Drowsiness? because we know that its a sleeping pill desgined for that purpose? or is it just there in case they might get sued or whatevre like mcdonalds put "caustion: hot" on their coffee

In this age where people file lawsuits for anything, manufacturers have to be very careful. Therefore, they warn us of everything to cover themselves. I have even seen warnings of 'may contain nuts' on a bag of peanuts!

Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull our little ones to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle to the ground?

Scroll down to the relevent rhyme and it tells you the derivation. It is quite a macabre lulla
by but there is a reason.

i heard people say that you can't wear white after labor day or is it veterans day
-which holiday is it, labor day or veteran's day
-why can't you wear white after
-what happens if you wear white

Unless you've just dropped into the film 'Serial Mom', it doesn't seem to matter these days. This website gives some information on the wearing of white after Labor day. It appears to refer to white shoes or pumps only though, not the clothes.

Why is it better to drink at the legal age, 18, then any lower age?

And if you're yougner than age 18 and drink, what does it do to your body parts?

The legal age can vary, in the UK it is 18, in other places it can 21 etc.

Underage drinking can seriously effect the natural growth of the body. Girls tend to be affected more easily than boys due to differing body shapes, less water and different metabolisms. Also, the smaller the body the less alcohol will be needed to have an adverse effect.
Alcohol is a drug and should be treated with caution. Underage drinking is on the increase in the UK, quite possibly in other countries as well.

Apart from the damaging effects on the body, it's more likely to affect a young persons judgement more quickly than an adult, (although they can do stupid things too).

I've given you a couple of websites that give you more information on the damaging effects on the body and some popular myths about drinking.

i'm really scared that i have diabetes. i eat a lot of sugar & unhealthy foods .. i'm 5'6" 135 lbs. ..been losing weight lately.. every time i eat sugar my heart beats really fast.. my head hurts & i'm tired (but i also have a cold) ... is there any way to reverse diabetes? i don't wanna go to a doctor to confirm that i have it =[ needles freak me out.

You do need to see a doctor as no one here is going to be able to diagnose you correctly. If you really can't cope with the idea of a blood test, which doesn't hurt and is over very quickly, ask the doctor if you can do a diabetic urine strip test. This is just a strip of coloured card that you urinate on. Depending on what colour it highlights the doctor will have a fair idea whether you need further testing or not.

Diabetes cannot be reversed but it can be controlled by diet and sometimes medication.

My eyes have twitched before randomly, but never for a long period of time. For three days now, my eyes have been twitching sporadically. Is this something to be concerned about or will it eventually just go away?

I have been stressed by school lately, and just began wearing contacts. But I don't think contacts have anything to do with it.

Stress, fatigue, prolonged looking at television or computer screens can cause this amongst a few other things. It is very irritating to have to put up with but it should ease in a few days. If it doesn't, look at what you can do to relieve some of the stress etc. If it's still doing it in a couple of weeks you should see your doctor to get it checked properly.

Ok I kinda think this a health question ( since health is mind body and state) but Im TERRIFIED OF FLYING ON AIRPLANES!!!!! I've never actually done it before but I fear terrorists, bombs, and crashing:( Now I realise that this rarely happens ( Twenty planes fly over my house and land everyday) but there's a part of me thats super terrified. But I really want a career that would have me flying all over the world at diffrent times ( Im a threater girl and am intending to major in threatre and go onto to big things) Can somebody tell me if hypnosis helps or tell me how to get over it please?:)

Some flight companies run Fear of Flying courses, Virgin Atlantic is one that I know of. It may be worth contacting your local airport to ask if this facility is offered near to you. They have been highly successful at helping people to overcome this very real fear, so if hypnosis does not work, you could explore this option.

If you try hypnotherapy, try to see someone who has been recommended to you, as it is expensive and you need to know that they have been successful with this phobia.

0KAY I AM 13 AND I NEED T0 FIND A J0B BUT THERE IS LIKE NUTHIN I CAN FIND TO DO IM 13 SO iDK BUT PLEASE HELP ITS VERY IMPORTANT

First of all, typing in capitals is considered as shouting on the internet and is not easy to read either.

As for jobs, it really depends where you live. I will give you some suggestions appropriate to your age but some of them may not be possible due to location etc. Also, some employees may not take you on due to your age and insurance issues rather than capabilities.

Babysitting, newspaper deliveries, dog walking, car washing, chores around the house, mowing lawns and other general gardening, litter picking, helping at a kennel, cattery or stables,
lightweight shopping for neighbours.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. Try looking at your local newspapers to see if there are any more ideas in the jobs section.

I know it's impossible to do it alone but I'd like to do my share. I walk and ride my bike a lot, turn off lights when I don't need them, reuse plastic containers, wear old clothing, use the power-saving bulbs, use both sides of my papers, recycle, and when I'm on my own I want to use solar power in my home. I guess you could say I'm a tree huger stuck in modern-day suburbia. I just want to know what else I can do to help the environment. [and not spend a ton of money.] Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

That's a brilliant thing to do and one person can make a difference because it has a domino effect. We can all affect the next person and so the awareness gathers momentum. The way we are going at the moment there won't be much of a world left for our grandchildren.

I have found some websites that gives you more tips, the first one allows you to add any of your own to share with others equally concerned about the environment.

When the Decca Records rejected The Beatles... "We don't like their sound. Groups of guitars are on the way out."

how could it effect us to think this way? to say "groups of guitars are on the way out"

Did the Decca Records only record bands.. that didn't play much guitars or what? On a website, it said it was their biggest mistake in history.. but I'm still confused why they rejected them.

When the Beatles auditioned they played 15 songs in an hour, all chosen by their manager Brian Epstein. The songs were a mixture of Lennon/McCartney songs and covers. The group did not perform well and made several mistakes. They were described as 'mediocre' and therefore did not impress the record company that much. Although, despite their poor performance, they were originally told they would be signed up, the decision was taken a few weeks later to reject them. They were told guitar groups were on the way out, although this did not stop Decca signing The Tremeloes, another guitar group.

It was a pretty big mistake considering how huge The Beatles went on to be. However, they did go on to sign up The Rolling Stones, so they did get some things right.

i have a very red face so i NEED to wear foundation ivwe tried cover girl, revlon, and maybeleen.the problem is i sweat like crazy, so is there ne sweat or waterproof foundation that might work for me??

Green tinted foundation helps to counteract redness, so you could try a good quality one. I have included a website that gives you more information on this. It's a Rosacea website, I'm not saying that this is what you have, but they do give useful tips.

okay my kitten is 6month i got him and at a flea market. hes been having the runs latly and sleeps a little to much my mom brought home a kitten the same age 2 weeks ago and was playful and crapped normal. he doesnt really care for dry food but eat canned his water habits are normal. i just want to know whats up.
please HELP!
thank you in advance!

?

Take him to a vet as soon as you can. Diarrhoea can be serious in a young animal especially as you don't know where he came from prior to the market. It could be worms, an infection, food intolerance or something really serious. You will not get an accurate diagnosis without him being checked over, including taking his temperature.

ive been wanting to go and get my hand read or have the tarot cards read to me too but i dont really know how to search for that how do i search that in my area like at yahoo yellow pages or in a yellow pages book?

Never go to anyone who advertises their services in phone books or local newspapers. If they need to do that, they do not usually have many clients. Good readers have waiting lists of clients. Similarly do not use phone readers, again, not to be trusted. Always try to find a reader by word of mouth as personal recommendations are a far better way of telling how good they are.

Ask if they tape the reading so that you can listen back to it at a later time to see how accurate they were. If they do not want it taped that could also be a cause to be cautious. You may need to supply your own tape however. A decent reader will not tell you anything of a doom and gloom nature. If they do, they are not doing their job properly. You should leave a reading with a feeling of hope and renewed energy for life.

A reading should last a minimum of half an hour to an hour. It should cost between £20-£50 in the UK, it could be different in the US.

So, my mom seriously doesn't approve of me being a vegetarian. She believes in eating all food categories to be healthy and blah blah. Well, I've been a vegetarian for almost 5 months now and I'm well and healthy and enjoying it. Well, my mom still opposes it and views it as an unhealthy thing. I've tried to get it through her head that I can still get the nutrients I'm missing from omitting meat out of my diet. But at times, she keeps on saying stupid things about me being a veg and vegetarianism and sometimes they just want to make me cry. And she absolutely opposes me becoming a vegan in the future. She thinks that I need meat, chicken, seafood, blah blah to be healthy to keep studying hard and I really don't. I'm getting all my protein and vitamins and etc with other foods. I know that I can't change her views on this because I've tried to do that a long time ago for almost 2 years straight. I just need to know how to get over what she says and no let it effect me. I really do enjoy being a veg and look forward to being a vegan in the future. And I really need to learn how to get over my mom's words.

15/f

If you really want to be a vegetarian you could try showing your mother these websites. The first ones show that eating meat isn't all that good for you, in fact, in some cases it can be quite unhealthy in the long term. I have also included some websites showing the benefits of a meat free diet.

These days where there is so much choice for us veggies, there is really is no need to be deficient in any of the essential nutrients needed for a healthy well balanced diet. The last sites give advice on how to ensure you manage this successfully. I have happily been a vegetarian for the last 20 years and would not dream of returning to a diet of meat or fish, so good luck with convincing your mother you will come to no harm on a sensible veggie diet.

AHH so I'm sixteen,
and I just started this new job,
and the lady said I didnt look sixteen, I looked much older.
And my sister is 10 years older than me, and a few times people have thought we were twins.

SO I'm not sure looking older is the best, because then when I'm actually like 21, I will look like I'm what..30?
help?

Please don't worry about that. In my experience if you look older when you are young, your age catches up with you and you end up looking younger when you've aged. (If you can follow that)! This tends to happen with the women in my family as well, so when you're 40, you'll look a glamourous 30. :)
