Sometimes when I'm on my computer, I get a message that says something like "Virtual Memory minimum too low : Windows is increasing the size of your paging file..."
What exactly does this mean?
Virtual Memory (AKA paging file or swap) is an area on your hard drive that is used the same way as RAM. RAM is extremely fast memory that programs use; it's the biggest factor in a computer's speed. Virtual memory is never as fast or as good as RAM, but if you don't have enough RAM, your computer is forced to use it.
When windows starts, it sets up part of the disk for use as a paging file right away. If that turns out not to be enough, you get that little balloon message and it increases the size. The way windows does it by default is inefficient, I recommend you follow my guide:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=223&userboard_id=38985
The second ► tells you how to change the page file's behavior so your computer is faster and you don't get those popups. Following the entire guide minimizes RAM usage so you don't run out.

I need to get an MPEG-4 movie onto my iPod, but I get a message that says it can't be played by the iPod so it doesn't get put on.
Are there any free file converters I can download that can help me out here? A name or url would be useful...
Mediacoder:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net
Download candidate release, not dev. Open mediacoder. Add all the files you want to convert. Click the large "extensions" button at the top. Choose the "apple ipod" link underneath the second picture. Click "yes". Leave default settings. Click "start" and wait for it to convert. Done, the converted files are in the same folder as they were before, with slightly different names.

I know you click ACTIONS>BURN IMAGE button to burn but..it will only let me select one video file to burn onto a disk and I need to select 8.
How do I burn my videos onto a disk?
No, that's not how you do it. A disk image is something completely different than what you want.
If you want to store the videos on a disk for later computer access, but you *don't want to play it in a DVD player*, go to file>new project>data CD or data DVD. Select DVD only if you have a DVD burner AND are going to use a blank DVD disk. Then simply use the built-in explorer in the center of the window to select your video files and add them to the project. Watch the bottom bar to see how much space you have left. If your videos are too large to fit into the disk, then you need to compress then into xvid format using mediacoder:
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net
Then select the compressed files instead. If the xvid files won't fit, then you've got some unusually huge files, and there is no way to move them to a disk.
If you want to play it in a DVD player, ask me another question. Expect an extremely long and complex guide on how to accomplish that ridiculously difficult task.

So you answered my question and mentioned using a proxysel addon for firefox. Well, I went to the link you sent me then I went to one of the links listed there but I didn't understand how to load a proxy etc. So if you could help with that I would really appreciate it.
(Sorry I keep asking you all these questions but it seems like you know the most about it and you help the most)
Save this file to your desktop:
http://www.checkedproxylists.com/proxylist_full_sep_24_21_02_07_d.csv
After you install proxysel into firefox, click the new "proxysel" menu item at the top of firefox. Go to "import - export proxylist", and then "import from file", then "import and append". Select the CSV file that you just saved to your desktop. Done. You can use the dropdown to select the proxy you want to use, and then click the first button to enable it.
When using a proxy, it always takes at least 2x longer to load pages, so you might want to use the third button to disable images; this will greatly increase speed.
The second button enables tor (the other anonymity application I mentioned), but it only works if you have tor and privoxy installed. You can download and install it here:
http://tor.eff.org/download.html.en
You want version 0.1.2.17 in the first row of the table. When it asks you in setup, don't install torbutton. Tor is usually faster than most proxies, and it's more secure. It takes about 5 minutes of browsing to warm up, and then the speed will increase.
Good luck!

My uncle used to have bearshare but he got a new computer, so now I need a FREE music site that I can download from, that is kind of easy for someone who isnt great with computers, does anyone have an idea of what to choose? Thanks!
Here's my P2P guide, for programs similar to limewire and bearshare:
http://www.advicenators.com/talkaboutmetopic.php?t=484&userboard_id=38985
You can safely download free music from these sites:

I asked that^
so now I'm wondering, will changing my ip do anything? like if someones hacking or w.e and I change my ip then could they still hack my computer?
Should I change it anyways, just to be on the safe side?
You didn't rate it :(
People need more than an IP to gain access to your computer. The victim *always* needs to either be running a faulty program or run a malicious program. Just being connected to the internet is NEVER enough to be hacked. Ask another question with your IP address and I'll tell you if you're exposed enough to be worried.
/release /renew will give you an IP that is still trackable to the same place, so it's pretty useless. I've only ever done it when I've been IP banned or when I've exceeded my limit at rapidshare-like sites. You could also use it if someone is DoS'ing you.
To protect your privacy you need to use a proxy, tor, or I2P. Proxies can be fast, but it's possible for the government and big companies to find you. I use the proxysel addon for firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4457
Tor is moderately fast, and pretty secure. The government might be able to track you:
http://tor.eff.org/
It won't hurt anything to change your IP if you want. Go to start, run and type:
ipconfig /release
and then type:
ipconfig /renew
Done.

if the government cant moniter limewire.. then how do ppl even get caught for downloading music?
In gnutella, users are of two different types: leaves and ultrapeers. Leaves talk ONLY to ultrapeers, and ultrapeers talk to a handful of both leaves and ultrapeers. Ultrapeers are promoted automatically by the network; you don't decide whether you are one.
When you search for a popular music title, you ask your local ultrapeer to search for you. That ultrapeer asks its leaves if they have it, and then it asks other ultrapeers, who do the same thing.
The thing that stops people from controlling the entire network is that ultrapeers will only pass on searches a certain number of times. If the limit is 6(I don't know what it actually is), after the 6th ultrapeer "generation" doesn't find anything in its leaves, it gives up and *does not* pass on the search. So *no one* is *ever* able to search, control, or monitor even a decent fraction of the entire network, unless they already control almost all the ultrapeers in it.
That does mean that some people get caught, and the **AA is able to monitor small parts of the network, but it hinders them enough to make it very expensive. It also means that you have a good amount of protection; it could be years before you get caught sharing, and you might never get caught downloading.

Is there any way I can get the new Internet Explorer? When my dad fixed my computer, I ended up with the old verison.
And also, how do I get email addresses saved. Like for example on Myspace, when you type in your email, it comes out.
Go to start, run. Type this:
wupdmgr
Internet Explorer will open, with Microsoft's update page open. Click "custom'. Then go through all the menus on the left(optional software, optional hardware, high priority) and select/check *everything*. Then click the green "install updates" link, and then then "install updates" button. Windows will install IE7 as part of these updates.
Alternatively, you can download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx
However, doing it the way above installs other important updates you really should have.
I recommend Opera, Kmeleon, or Firefox instead of IE7:
http://opera.com
http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/
http://getfirefox.com
To make a link that, when clicked, opens the default mail application with the sender as the email, use this:
link text
So to make an email to example@example.com, you would use this:
This is an example email link
Good luck!

http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5
To download I clicked on Zip archive (Windows 2000/XP, 3.17 MiB), and it went to a page.
A box poped up to download and i clicked open.
WinZip opened and I clicked on the button that said USE EVALUATION VERSION.
Then it opened on Winzip page with like 100 lists of things =/
Here's a screencap of it:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r155/wind_miko/help.jpg
How am i supposed to use the program now?
The problem is with winzip. Uninstall it, because the program isn't free. Then install 7-zip, which is completely free; there isn't even a paid version available:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z442.exe
After you install 7-zip, download infrarecorder again, this time save it to your desktop:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/infrarecorder/ir0431_unicode.zip?download
Right click the zip file and go to 7-zip>extract files. Don't change any options in the next window, just click ok. The files are extracted to your desktop in a new folder. Open the folder, and run the exe, I believe it's called "infrarecorder.exe"; in some windows configurations the ".exe" or ".zip" part of files are omitted.

Go to start, run. Type:

Find your user and verify that it is in the "administrators" group. If it isn't, select it, then click "properties". Go to the "group policy" tab and put it in other>administrators.
Contact me via IM if that doesn't work. I have a vista installation I can use if necessary.

So I was on a site talking to a random guy and on this site its easy for people to get your ip address so I googled ip address and saw this site that has like a satellite image of my ip address location but when I zoomed in it wasn't my house so I was wondering if this random guy I was talking to got my ip to that "house" would he be able to find me? Or would he just go to that house?
The reason I ask this is because there was a man in front of my house like a month ago and he had binoculars and was looking in and my mom saw so she went outside and he quickly drove away, we filed a police report but I'm always so paranoid that it will happen again. The most info I gave him was my first name (which is really different so it adds to my worry)and the state I live in.
I blocked this chat site from my computer but I don't think it matters much anymore. (Also, this person told me he installed internet which adds a ton to my paranoia with this ip thing)
Also, any ways you can help me to make my situation more comfortable is appreciated.
Please Help.
Macdude92, your IP address ALWAYS points to your location, and your ISP has no control over it. ISPs are given a very large number of IP addresses to hand out by a Regional Internet Registry, and they always correspond to a location. There's nothing anyone can do about it.
Spookykiwi, in run type "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew". You now have a new IP address. For strong anonymity, however, use a proxy, tor, or I2P.
The building you zoomed into isn't yours. It's your ISP's data center that is closest to you. For most people it's in a nearby city, for a few it's in a completely different state. Your ISP probably won't give you your info to random people.
From the info you gave him, he can find you if he's smart. On all IM communication except MSN, your IP address is visible to all parties if they use a packet sniffer. When they get your IP they can narrow the search down to a handful of cities. Especially if you're 17 it will be harder, but they can still look in phone books.
At this point there isn't anything you can do. And being paranoid in the future isn't going to help much either, since you're *expected* to give your ASL+first name.
(short answer: yes, it is possible to locate you with that info)

has limewire been monitered by the government in the past few weeks/!?
See my answer here:
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=514516
It's impossible to monitor the entire Gnutella1(limewire) network. The people who invented Gnutella1 (the same people who made winamp) built it to withstand government tampering.

O.K. So I have Windows Vista 2007
I downloaded Limewire onto my computer
I downloaded the songs from Limewire onto my computer
I saved them onto Windows Media Player, which it does have stored on because it actually plays the songs on there.
I clicked burn on Windows Media.
It said it burned it. I TEST it to see if it did so, and it didn't.
I made my own list on another program that I have to drag the songs, and then I clicked burn there. It supposedly burned and popped out, so I tested it and I heard nothing.
I really need to know step by step how to burn downloaded music (preferably off of limewire) onto Windows Vista 2007 b/c nothing is working and it's driving me crazy. I've spent the last two days doing this. I really do need help. Thanx.
-Download and extract infrarecorder:
http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
direct download link:
http://tinyurl.com/3bpv3t
-Download an extract this and put the irlame.irc file into the "codecs" folder inside of the place you extracted infrarecorder to:
http://tinyurl.com/ytvanx
-Put the disk in
-Open infrarecorder
-Go to file>new project>audio CD
-Use the built-in explorer to add all of your music files, or as many as will fit on the disk(look at the bottom bar). I believe limewire stores your downloads in C:\documents and settings\your user name\downloads, but I could be wrong. You can also drag the files from limewire into infrarecorder.
-In infrarecorder, go to actions>burn compilation>to compact disk.
-In the next window, make sure your CD burner is selected in the first box and change the second box to 6x.
-Click OK and wait while it burns.
-Done.
If it doesn't work:
-You're using something other than a CD-R disk
-You don't have a CD burner
-Your CD burner is broken
-The audio files are broken, DRM'd, or encoded in a weird format

Is there a "Editing program" like Windows Movie maker that can edit QUICKTIME (.mov) files???
Because ive tried uploading quicktime videos into windows movie maker, but it just doesn't support it.
So is there an editing program that is available for free download off the internet that can edit Quicktime videos just like Windows Movie Maker?
Thanks!!
Maggie
Convert it with Mediacoder, as I explained in your other question:
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=514661
Windows media player will play(container:format) AVI:DV-video, Mpeg-1:Mpeg-1, and Windows media:Windows media.
There are two other free video editors, but for you Movie Maker might be best:
http://www.jahshaka.org/
http://www.zs4.net/
Quicktime is a closed format, so Apple is the only one that can make video editing programs for quicktime files. You'll have to convert.
