What is a good alternative to MSN Messenger that would let me use my same password and screenname that I use for the normal MSN Messenger?

How do you convert from flv to mp4 using MediaCoder?

I tried, but it stops halfway and I get the Windows prompt asking me if I want to send an error report.

How do I do this?

Just use zamzar:
http://www.zamzar.com/

Mediacoder is beta software; it's very buggy. Probably 30% of all possible conversions don't work with it.

If your flv file is too big for zamzar, search:

A few days ago I started to have a lot of trouble with my computer. Command prompt is opening by itself, usually two windows at a time, and then an error pops up and closes them. Why is command prompt opening? Is it dangerous?

Another thing, I always use firefox [latest edition] and never ever use IE [for many reasons]. Now though, I'm getting pop ups that open in IE, stuff like 'crush calculator' or that pop up that says to run a system scan. Yeah, I exit out of them.
I ran AVG free edition and it detected some threats labeled 'virus lop', so I moved them to quarantine, but now when I start up windows I get an error "rundll" or something like that, is this something I need to be concerned about?
I'm getting a lot of errors with stuff like 'winlogin' and 'explorer.exe' and 'ctfmon'. I have been trying to get screenshots but my computer has been restarting automatically when these errors show up.
AVG also found some trojans and removed them.

I'm on my college's internet connection.
I'm running Windows XP and my computer is about 5 years old and getting kind of low on hard drive space [I don't know if that matters with this problem though].
I have to get through the rest of the school year with this computer. It ran fine until this started happening, now it's slow and error-ridden. :(

My main question is: what's the deal with command prompt opening without me doing anything?
and
is there anything I can do, besides run AVG, to figure out what's going on with my comp and how to fix it?

I'm not the most tech-savvy person, but I'm not completely ignorant either [at least I hope I'm not that dumb haha], so is this something I can fix on my own?

thanks to anyone who reads this and helps.

Yes, you should be worried. You are missing important windows files, probably because AVG deleted them. You have mutliple kinds of malware. Your are probably running a lot of unnecessary programs which are slowing down windows. What I do when I get multiple problems like that is just completely reinstall Windows. That fixes all the problems.

Follow my guide for unexplained popups and then my guide for speeding up windows:

If you still have any problems, post on a malware removal forum:

That should get your computer cleaned up pretty well, but the best solution would still be to reinstall.

Okay so more than likely I have to get an IV tomarrow for my MRI (i posted a question earlier) and I'm just wondering if they hurt? Like does it hurt more or less than a shot? and does it hurt to take it out? :/

I'm a superrrr bigg babyyy when it comes to needles. I had alot of bloodwork done as a kid because of sickness and being premature. So any tips on how to not be nervous or think about it is greatly appreciated.

Getting it in your arm doesn't hurt hardly at all. Just a pinch and an odd sensation. It hurts a lot when they put it in your hand, though.

They can numb it, but they usually won't unless you ask. They do it with an injection using a small needle or a cream; the injection works better. If they're going to put it in your hand, be sure to ask for the numbing stuff.

do you guys know anything about the anonymous browser, search the phil? Well it got blocked so i was wondering if anyone knows any really good anonymous browsers because I live in the UAE and they block absolutely everything here, like I'm surprised this site isn't blocked!

Use tor:
http://www.torproject.org/
If tor doesn't work, use I2P:
http://www.i2p2.de/

Both of those use proxy settings, so they work in any browser. Here is a browser with tor build-in, if you don't want to install and set up everything:
http://xerobank.com/

If none of those work, use psiphon:
http://psiphon.civisec.org/
You need to know someone who is not in a restricted country to run the server part of the application. If you can't find anyone, try looking on the psiphon forum.

If you need help with any of that, contact me here:
theymos@gmail.com
ICQ: 214850779

Yahoo: theymos
MSN: theymos@hotmail.com

I wouldn't be surprised if all of the websites linked above are blocked. So I've created a package containing all the pages of the websites linked above, and the installation packages you will probably need. I have mirrored the package over a number of mirrors, in case one is blocked. Click any one of these links:

I extracted some songs from Youtube using keepvid.com and Mediacoder, but I compared the sound between a song bought off of iTunes and this converted video. Obviously, iTunes had a better sound quality. I remember seeing that you answered a question regarding evening out songs so that they are of the same volume. How do you do this? The extracted song has a lower volume than the one off of iTunes.

You can use Audacity to do that:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net
Go to tools, amplify, and play around with it until you have it at the correct volume.

If you already have the mp3 with the target volume, you can do this easier with mp3gain:
http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/
Put both files in and click "track analysis". Then Change "target normal volume" to the "volume" displayed by the target file. Click "track gain". The files are now the same volume.

Do you have any specific links that give you money for taking surveys?

Try some of the sites on cashcrate:

Ok, I have windows XP on my laptop.
You know when you press Alt+Crtl+Delte, it sometimes goes to task manager, but then on some computers it comes up with options like lockm shut down, log off.

Well I'd like to know how I could lock my laptop like that.
What would I have to do?

Hold down the windows key(between CTRL and ALT) and then press L.

sorry you bother you again but are you sure cashcrate is safe

Cashcrate gives you money for going to other sites that give you money. None of the sites cashcrate sends you to will give you viruses or spyware, and they won't steal your credit card numbers. Some of them(but not cashcrate itself) may call you, spam you, send you letters, and share your personal information with marketing companies. Read their individual terms to find out what they'll do.

I've heard a lot about taking online surveys, and making money. Is this a scam? Has anyone tried this?

I've made about $50 from things like that. You're definitely not going to get rich from it, but it works.

I have itunes and i'm sick of having to spend 15$ every time i want some more songs because i need a new gift card.

now lots of my friends use limewire and love it. I know the quality of the music is cheap, but you can get like whatever songs you want. I was just wondering how badly illegal is it, and have anyone ever got caught??

plus what is the chance i will get a virus using it, and yah.

thanks! :]

Remember how to be safe with P2P by using the acronym SOBS(which you will be doing if you don't):
S-Use SECURE networks like nodezilla and OFF whenever possible
O-Use OBSCURE networks like DirectConnect and ares to avoid being targeted
B-Use BITTORRENT whenever possible
S-Don't be STUPID(see second link)

My computer mouse isn't working and I have no idea how to get it. Yes; it's plugged in, I'm not an idiot. It took me about 20 minutes just to figure out how to get the internet open and it takes forever using the keyboard to get everything to work. I've only ever had this problem once before and we realized the mouse wasn't even plugged in which is why I knew to look this time.

My dad says we'll probably have to get a new computer but because this is MY computer I'd have to pay for the new one. I'm the youngest and everyone else has laptops. I graduate in June and we were going to wait until then and my parents were going to get me a laptop for when I go to college but since they can't afford to buy one for me now I'd have to buy the laptop and all of the programs. My mom said she'd pay for half or a $350 maximum depending on the price I get. I'd really rather wait 5 more months so my parents can pay for it than have to buy one now.

My question is - if it seems that the only problem is my mouse not working could I just need a new mouse? My dad is really stubborn and he says we have to just get a new computer. I know that I can afford one myself because I have $4,000 in the bank but I'm paying for college myself and I don't want to have to waste any money on a laptop unless it's absolutely necessary.

Oh, and just so you know, I've already let the computer stay shut down for a while and I've just left it alone for a few hours. Obviously the computer is working just fine - it seems that the mouse is my only problem.

Can getting another mouse work? If so, how much should that cost?
Or should I listen to my dad and just by my own laptop and get it now?

I'm sorry for the length. Oh, and if it helps, we've have the computer for about four years now and we were planning on getting rid of it once I got my laptop (which was supposed to be in mid-June). Thanks in advance. =]

If anyone ever tells you to buy a new computer and your computer still makes sounds (and especially if it still outputs *anything* to the screen), punch them in the face. That would be throwing money right down the drain.

Get a new mouse. If the new mouse doesn't work, take it to a computer repair place.

whats the difference between the TradeMark sign and the Copyright sign?

Trademarks are used on certain words and symbols. For example, PC Magazine is a trademark. No one else in the same field(computers) could use the term PC Magazine. Businesses in other fields can use the same trademarked terms. For example, if there was a magazine about political correctness, they could call their magazine PC Magazine.

Copyright is used on artistic works. No one can use copyrighted works, not even in different fields. All of PC Magazine's articles are copyrighted. No one can copy the text or pictures in the articles.

Trademarks are to protect brands. Copyrights are to protect artistic works and their authors.

My cousin has a Sansa c240 mp3 player. I connected the MP3 to my computer, and it's not showing up in My Computer. She tried it on her uncle's computer and her friend's computer and it [supposedly] worked.

I have looked at troubleshooting guides and they tell me to change the USB settings. I've tried looking for the USB settings option on the Settings menu.. but it's not there. Please help me figure this out. She really wants me to put songs on her mp3, but it doesn't show up in My Computer!

I really want a Hugo Chavez shirt [Venezuelan leader]. I think it's him on the red shirt like wearing a black hat sort of thing and his face is all black, and the shirt is red.

I believe it has to do with 'Viva La Evolucion'.

I also remember seeing a kid with a Peter Griffin [Family Guy] hoodie with Peter impersonating Chavez.

Direct links is what I need.

Much appreciated.

No, that's Che Guevara:

He was a Communist revolutionary.

Does anyone know of any websites where, for example, you look up a song and it tells you what the genre of that song is?

Thanks loads in advance.

hi i'd like to know which ones better cause i have a pc with vista and it runs so slowwwww eventhough i haven't installed much things yet =S ...and i've heard that mac work faster and you can get windows in it ..i just want to know like ..will i have many problems if i buy a mac (because of compatibility) which one od you prefer??? have in mind that I need to take it to school 12 hours and my battery only last barely 2 hours and my computer its not even old model :S and i have to take the charger with me all the time and its really heavy ,eventhough tthe smalles of the hp computers its very thick...thnx sorry if its long

Read my answer here for a comparison between the two:
http://www.advicenators.com/qview.php?q=518689

And in case you missed it at the link above, *almost all Windows programs will not work on a mac*. Paint, photoshop, Internet Explorer, and all of your games will not work. Any programs your school gives you will not work.

Vista does suck, but you will still be able to use XP for the next 5-10 years. I recommend downgrading to XP for right now, and then deciding later.

I really like Windows XP. I think it is a fine, mostly slim OS. I use XP instead of others because:
-Older versions of Windows are unsupported and dangerous
-Macs are built for people who don't like messing with computers. I don't want my computer to "just work", I want to modify it so that it works perfectly, the way I want it.
-Vista is too bulky, and, while it offers the same options as XP, it makes it harder to get to them.
-I've used Gentoo, Debian, and Ubuntu linux, and none of them were good enough to sacrifice Windows-only programs. I found myself using the command line way more than I wanted to. I can handle it no problem, but it is an inconvienience I don't have to live with, and so I won't. When linux OSes mature to the point where command-line usage is only needed the same amount or less than Windows, I will be ready to move to them. Hopefully that will be before I am "required" to use Vista.
