about

I've been away for a while due to a serious illness and subsequent health issues.

Favourite quotes of the moment:

The children of Israel wandered the desert for 40 years - Even in biblical times men wouldn't ask for directions!

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. whatever we do to the thread, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect. - Chief Seattle.

We spend the first 12 months of a child's life teaching them to walk and talk. We spend the next 12 years telling them to sit down and shut up!

As you slide down the bannisters of life, may the splinters never be pointing the wrong way.

May you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

I've been very happily married since August 1980 to a wonderful man and have beautiful twin girls, now aged 31. Both are married to wonderful young men and one of our girls has recently made us grandparents to a beautiful, smart and feisty granddaughter. I studied geology with the Open University. I am retired from being a manager in a large UK based insurance company which I actually quite enjoyed. (How sad is that?). I love anything to do with the environment and wildlife and try to do my bit for preservation and conservation. I would like there to be a decent world for our grandchildren to inherit. I also have CFS so find life a bit of a challenge at times but always hope for better health in the future.

I have a deep interest in the spiritual and the paranormal worlds, having experienced several incidents myself, and have been involved in meditation groups and groups that (safely) explore the paranormal. There is more to this life than we would normally credit, so an open mind is always the best option. You're not so likely to get caught by surprise!

I have a deep fascination for anything to do with Ancient Egypt, as you can probably tell by my name. I have statues and paintings all around the house. As my hubby has a similar interest in Native Americans, we tend to have a lot of unusual wall decorations, like a tomahawk.

I love cars, especially vintage ones, but my all time favourite has to be the Bugatti Chiron, what a car!

I have had a lot to do with animals over the years. I have fostered many, helped to set up a wildlife charitable hospital and raised a diverse range of young animals from bats to fox cubs and different species of birds, even a baby deer! I have had great pleasure in sharing my life and home with a number of animals over the years, most of them rescues. I am currently sponsoring an Amur Tiger, they are such beautiful cats and desperately need help, there are so few of them left. I was lucky enough a couple of years ago to meet some Aye-Aye's and Livingstone's Bats, a truly wonderful experience. We now have three cats, Oliver and Mollie, a brother and sister, he's a ginger and she's a tortoiseshell and a black and white called Daisy. She arrived in a taxi and was left on our doorstep in a cat carrier with the message that 'they knew we loved cats and would be good to her'. She has settled down well and gets on wonderfully with the other two.

If you have a pet that is showing ANY signs of illness or distress, please, please, please take it to a vet! Even if finance is an issue, work that out later. It is cruel to leave an animal suffering for any reason. Most animals do not show signs of illness until they have been ill for some time, basic instinct tells them it is a display of vulnerability, and certain death in the wild. Their instincts have not caught up with domesticity.

I do feel that we should all treat others as we would wish to be treated. Bad karma comes back to haunt us.

advice

Ok well my sister had two stiches on her forward because of a cut and its been two weeks since the stitches have been removed and it still didn't heal yet! What can I do to hlep make it heal?

Please let it go away..it's all my fault she got it and if it never heals then my family will be mad at me for life and we'll always remember it since we can see it on her face everday!

And she always wanted to be a model! Most likely she won't but atleast I wanted her to have hope for it.

You could try bio oil on it. It's not that cheap but it's supposed to be great for scars, stretch marks and other blemishes. I have included a couple of links for you to read about it.

.My puppies were throwing up and pooping blood now only diarrehea but would like to know if I should be worried and what this could have been...... Are they very sick?

They need to see a vet asap. Puppies only need to lose a little blood for it to be serious. It could be something like parvo virus if they've not been innoculated against it, which is very dangerous. Only a vet would be able to know for sure what is wrong with them and give the correct treatment. So please get them checked out as quickly as you can?

About a week ago i got a new kitten and it is only about 3-4 weeks old well this kitten has a stuffy nose, sneezes all the time and its eyes get really watery so they get crusty and she cant open them. She eats and drinks (alot) goes to the bathroom normal sleeps, and plays all the time. I called the vet and they said all i need to do is just keep washing her face. For a couple of days she started getting better and then it started to get hot and yucky out and now she is getting really bad again. I just want to know if she is going to be ok and if there is anything i can do besides taking her to the vet. If I have to i will but i want that to be the last thing i do because it is so expensive. If you know anything please let me know. THANK you .

It sounds like it could be cat flu. She really does need to see a vet. I understand about costs, but that really does need to be factored when you decide to get an animal.
Cat flu is not like our flu and she would need antibiotics to recover fully. Not having the correct medication can cause her to appear to get better only to become ill again. She would also need eye cream otherwise her eyes could get ulcerated which then damages the sight.
Once a cat has had cat flu, it can rear up again at any time, usually if the cat is traumatised or something else attacks its immune system.
I'm not saying it is definitely cat flu, it may soemthing like hayfever, only a vet would be able to diagnose correctly, but if it is this, it is highly contagious to other cats and can make them feel quite horrible. Is it worth the risk?

we're learning about africa and how so many people have aids and are dieing of it and i was wondering do people mainly die of aids because of unprotected sex or what?

There are many reasons for the high numbers of people infected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Poor education of the populace, informing them on prevention of disease.

Poverty affecting the ability to purchase condoms.

Poor medical practice using dirty needles, quite often through insufficent funding to buy new equipment.

Corruption of some governments resulting in not passing much needed funding of basic healthcare to the people.

Religious and cultural taboos.

Children being born to infected mothers.

The somewhat backward thoughts that women carry the disease, so they are checked to see if they are clear and the men can sleep around until they are married. Of course this then means that they have picked up the virus, passed it to their wives who in turn pass it to their unborn babies.

I'm sure there must be other reasons, but those are a few to get you started.

okay, so tomorrow i am going to get 2 vaccines, i think cholera, and typhoid, because i am going to india in the summer. I am soo terrified of vaccines, and shots. The last time i had a shot was a looooong time ago. So do you know if cholera and typhoid vaccines hurt? Pleaseeee answer quickly because i am going tomorrow. Please help mee...i am soo scared.

Do they hurt? Have any advice on what is should do? I could bring my ipod, BUT it'd still hurt. im scared, help meee please!! :]

I had these shots a few years ago before I went to Africa. It was no worse than any other injections I have had and I suffered no side effects. So, you should be fine with them.
Tell the nurse that you are scared and see if you can take someone with you who will be able to distract you. Don't be tempted to watch and with the distraction as well it'll be over very quickly. Keep in mind that thinking about it is going to be worse than having the shots.

Good luck.

I think knowing alot about a families history is very immportant. but yet not alot of my relitives are around to talk to about that. i am very crouis about alot of things about my ansestors life and i really want to do some reasearch on them to find out more information and learn about them.

ive tried to google some, but it never gets me anywhere with out paying scam websites.

dose anyone know any good ways i can track my ansestors history?
i would greatly appricete this
thank you

You need to start with the history of the family you do know, then decide which one(s) you're going to track, eg, your mum or dad. If they are still alive you can ask for the history of their parents, keeping a record of everything you have discovered.

When you get back to a point where you have exhausted any living family members, you turn to birth, marriage and death certificates. From the birth certificates you will find the names of their parents, which should lead you onto when they got married, (which is really useful if you're following a female family member), and then to the death certificates. Plot this on your 'tree'.
There are various websites that will help with this, or if your family have stayed in the same area for years, local churches and registrars should be able to help.

You do need to try to stay focussed on one thread, otherwise you could end up having branches all over the place, very confusing.
It is quite a time consuming occupation and you will probably come across charges for things like duplicate certificates and some searches.

The Mormons are a good source for this information as they are trying to establish records for everyone and their families as far back as when records began. However, there is a monthly charge for using their site. I have included the link in case you wanted to use them. There is a free trial that you may be able to make use of.

I have also given you another link that is free, but I'm not sure how extensive their records are.

15/f Okay so I keep getting an infection down there..:( It's like really embarrassing it's been on and off for a year now. I know I shouldn't of let it go that long but I'm extremely shy and it's just hard for me to go to a doctor. I think i have bacterial vaginosis. I have like all the symptoms. Is it too late to go to the doctor?? I don't want him to get mad at me for waiting so long to come in and it's getting worse for some reason. What could it be???

Don't worry, it's not too late but you really do need to go. If that is what it is, you will need antibiotics to clear it up.

The doctor has seen it all before and will treat you as though you are showing him a non embarrassing part of the body. He shouldn't get mad at you, as it's understandable that you would feel shy about this.

He may want to do some tests to see why you keep getting this. It could just be that you haven't had it treated correctly originally so it hasn't completely gone away each time.

Over your life time you will need to allow doctors access to this sensitive area many times, so you will (hopefully) get used to it. If there is a female doctor why not ask to see her if it will make you more comfortable?

today i was peting my cat and i noticed something unusal she was missing a pacth of hair on her back - about the size of a coin- and there is like a scab or a rash or something on her skin.

im really worried about this
she is 3 year old female indoor cat

please help me if you have any ideas what
could be wrong with her.

There's a chance it could be ringworm. Even if she is an indoor cat, it could be transferred from outside contact. She could also have developed a localised itch and scratched herself sore, but there are quite a few other things it could be as well.
She really does need to see a vet as soon as you can get her there for a proper diagnosis.

okay, for about a month or two now, i've lost alot of weight for some reason. i don't know why, because i've been eating way more than normal. also, i've been more tired than i am usually & i get tired easier when i'm exercising or something like that. i've had head aches alot of & on the past month too. & for about two weeks, i've been getting these random bruises on my arms & legs, but mainly just my arms. i haven't even done anything to cause them, so i don't have a clue what the heck they're from. any idea what this could be?

No one on this site is going to be able to tell you exactly what is wrong with you. You really do need to see a doctor as soon as you can. There may be nothing to worry about, but if you are scared you are not going to feel any calmer until you have.
These symptoms could be from several things, some serious, some not, so you do need to get it checked out. Keep in mind that the sooner you see someone, the sooner you will know, get treated, or be told you've no need to be concerned.

Good luck.

Can you get sick by being cold for a long period of time? Thanks!

It depends how cold and for how long. You could get hypothermia if it's very cold. Other than that, being cold doesn't make you sick as such, but it does make you more vulnerable to infections by supressing your immune system. Your body is designed to work better if it stays at an ambient temperature. Extremes can compromise this.

I am a junior, senior next year graduating in the year 2008.

I do plan to attend college in 2009. In the year that I am not in college I would like to go to London and be a nanny. I love kids. The only problem is, I can't find any ads anywhere because I live in the US. Can anybody help me find ads or give me ads for nannying jobs in London?

"The Lady" is one of the oldest and most respected magazines in the country, and its classified columns are a great place to find positions like this. They do have an on line option and I have included the website for you to look at. The listing of contents is on the left hand side.
Good luck with the job hunt.

Okay i use the asthma medicine Advair and i heard that it is a steroid. So does it make you fat? Is that the reason that i cant lose weight? I have stopped taking it. But iono... thanks

Cody*

According to recent research, inhaled corticosteroids have not been linked to weight gain.
If you have been prescribed this medication you should not stop taking it unless a doctor has advised you to. You have to take them regularly and in the suggested dose to properly control your asthma. Failure to do so could have serious consequences on your health and well being.
If you are having weight issues, are you able to exercise enough or is the asthma preventing you? Does your diet need to be looked at?
If your asthma is getting in the way of leading a normal life, you may need the dose adjusted. Keep in mind that it can take up to a month to notice a change.
If you have a medical condition it's usually best to consult your doctor about exercising and they should be able to give you guidance about a suitable regime.

I recently had surgery. Recently, as in about a week ago. I had my check-up appointment today and I'm pretty sure they will be taking the staples out. I was wondering if anyone has gone through with the removal of staples. Does it hurt? What does it feel like? Should I take a pain medication before going? I'm kind of nervous; I don't like pain or needles.

Any advice would be great.

The surgery was for appendicitis. My appendix ruptured so I have 3 little holes from the minimally invasive surgery.

I had a C Section some years ago and had several staples. The removal was not at all painful except for when the nurse missed one and got my skin instead! I didn't need any pain killers and all I felt was a slight pulling sensation. It's all over very quickly. You should be fine.

My girlfriend and I would like to know why she smell so bad down there (her vagina). :/ It smells like fish. She says she showers and uses soap and I know cause most times Im with her. But yeah.... :/ We just would like to know why? And if we can change that...

If there is a fishy smell, it could Bacterial Vaginosis. This is a really common thing to get and is easily cleared up with antibiotics. I have included a website that gives you more information.

I dont know what to do! I just got this puppy like a week ago and it aint eating notin i mean like 3 days after we got it it waz playing and running around the house and everything and eating, now it aint eating notin. We tried to give it food today but it want eat it all it would do is drink water and milk. What should i do she is losing weight and everything .

It needs to see a vet as soon as possible.
Three days is too long for a puppy to go without food. It could be nothing but there are a lot of diseases and internal problems that can stop them from eating as well. I won't go into details here because there are a lot of them, most serious.
If the vet rules out those, they will be able to give you qualified advice on what to do next.
Good luck.

My dog is 4 years old and housebroken. Lately (six months and counting) he pees in the house. He usually picks something that is laying on the floor, shoes, bookbags, clothes. He is crated when we are not home and is on a leash when he is outside. What can we do to stop this?

Never, ever hit an animal, they will not understand, and they will think that the people they love and trust most have turned on them.

Get him checked with the vet first to make sure there is no medical basis for the problem.
If he's clear of that, think back to when this started. Was there anything that he could have seen as being traumatic at that time? It could be something you would have taken no notice of but was enough to upset his little world, either inside or outside of the house.

If there are still no pointers to the reason, he may just need some retraining. Ensure he is taken out after every time he eats or drinks, so that his 'tank' is empty. Either make or buy a rattle can. This is a tin with a secure lid, that you put marbles or small pebbles inside, anything that makes a sharp noise. follow him around the house, when he looks as if he is about to cock his leg, throw the can on the floor. He will not associate the noise with you, but should start to realise that every time he tries to pee inside, he hears this horrible noise. As dogs have very sensitive hearing, he should get the message very quickly.

My Grandma passed away on Tuesday, and my Dad asked me if I would do a reading for her... I'm terrified of public speaking... but I think I could manage reading a poem, does anyone know any suitable poems (preferrably ones I could find on the internet) I have googled "funeral poems"... but they're not really what im looking fo... I would like a beautiful poem, maybe about nature or god and heaven... (my Gran was a devout catholic who spent much of her time in church)... thankyou so much for your help x x x

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, I hope your family and you are coping with this.

I've found a couple that may be of some help, the first is called 'Do not stand at my grave and weep' by Mary Frye.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
(Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!)

The second is an old Indian prayer.

Should your blanket be torn,
May your breezes blow warm,
May your pleasure be what you find.
May the burdens you bear
Like your bounty-be shared
May you leave something good behind

May the sky and the land
Rise to your command
May your senses come like the night.
Live in peace with the Earth
As in death-As in birth
May you prosper, and have a good life.

The last one was written for our Queen Mother's funeral.

She is Gone
By Anonymous

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she's gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Good luck.

Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, David Bowie, The Hollies, Thin Lizzie to name but a few. They are all Brit bands/singers though.
