Why aren't I losing weight?

Question Posted Monday March 30 2015, 2:22 pm

I've cut my daily calorie intake from 4000 to 1500, I'm drinking lots of water and green tea every day (they're the only beverages I drink now), I've cut out crisps, chocolate, cakes, and all forms of junk food. I exercise for 30 minutes a day. I've been doing this for 10 days so why haven't I lost any weight?

Go vegan. I went vegan this year and have lost 40 pounds, with minimal exercise, bringing down my BMI from 30 to 24. I weigh less now than I did throughout high school, as an overweight teenager, even when I exercised for hours while on Junior Varsity and Varsity sports teams.

My goal for next year is to lose 30-40 more pounds, I just need to start exercising on a regular basis. Nothing crazy, just 30-60 minutes of jogging, Ballet Beautiful, bike riding.. things like that.

I think it's amazing what I've accomplished so far, just by changing my diet, though. It's a lot easier to go vegan than it seems. I was never vegetarian, I went from being able to eat an entire box of pizza or entire tub of ice cream in one sitting to a full-fledged vegan. I now spend a lot less money on groceries, have more energy (never need caffeine, and never feel lethargic like I used to on a regular basis), have more concentration, and etc. Try it for a week, that's how I started, and I felt so good that I just kept going, and it's now been 5 months! You can get every nutrient from plant foods, including protein!

The only vitamin you need to supplement is B12, and one I personally recommend is Garden of Life's B12 spray (cause I personally hate swallowing pills, and methylcobalamin is better than cyanocobalamin). You can buy it at any health foods store (Whole Foods, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, etc.), or online.

First, congratulations for making these improvements to your lifestyle! You must be feeling a lot healthier already. (if not you should probably be eating more-calculate your caloric needs here

For long term weight loss it is recommended to have a 500 calorie deficit/day at most and to lose at most 1-2lbs/week, so don't worry if its only been 10 days.

Maybe you aren't weighing yourself properly? You should weigh yourself in the morning, after going to the washroom, with minimal clothing on. Also keep salt to a minimum as it causes you to retain water.

-Get 8-10 hours of sleep/night

-don't eat 3hrs before bed, it messes up digestion

-eat 4-6 small meals/ day such as apple with 100% pb, wholewheat toast and berries, smoothie

-Do a mix of cardio and weight training to burn fat and build muscle.

-keep fat intake low, as it has 9 calories/gram and carbs and protein have only 4 so it is easy to overeat on them. Also 97% of excess dietary fat is stored as fat

-Avoid oil and minimize animal products

when I went vegan I lost weight effortlessly while eating more volume, but you don't have to cut it out completely especially since you've already cut out so much junk food!
Just Eat more whole grains, legumes, fruit and veg and focus on overall health :)

First off time. You can't expect to go from a larger woman to a super model in a day. First 1500 is a quite generous amount but you can make do with it? First if you drink tea no sugar. No extra toppings on healthy foods. Eat fruits and vegetables more. You can't starve just eat right. Just exercise a bit more. I know they advertise exercise less but maybe 10 minutes here 10 there and measure it out a bit .
I don't believe 30 bloody minutes is e enough for change

Done
BTW not British just say bloody

If you are really serious on losing weight then start eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Exercise at least an hour a day. Try this for multiple weeks to a month and you should see some weight loss happen. Good luck!

its only been ten days! lol give it some time!

while i agree with seeing the doctor to make sure your body is ok, i also think you need to find the right kind of diet that isnt too stressful on your body because the wrong diet could trick your body into a do or die/survival mode and it will be more resistant to letting go of the fat.

if your not taking multi-vitamins i would if i were you, water and REGULAR unsweetened tea work too. you might need to cut out certain things like breads of any kind, and try a high protein diet, my husband is currently on the keytone diet and hes dropping weight like ive never seen before on anyone its amazing.
Theres forums you can check on anytime to find out right then and there is theres something you want to eat but arent sure about.

A diet of 1,500 calories is well below the minimum daily recommended calorie count for the average active teenager.

I do not wish to scare you but I would like you to see your doctor and have the doctor check your Adrenal system. I have a friend whose Daughter is seriously ill in hospital. She tried to lose weight like you with diet and exercise. Instead of losing weight she ballooned up to 200 pounds, got very sick and is now in the hospital fighting for her life.

Nothing says this is your problem and I might very well just be an alarmist. Fact is I would rather be an alarmist and scare you into going to the doctor than sit here and say nothing. Then read months from now that you're sick and fighting for your life.

Please see a doctor and have your Adrenal system checked.

You shouldn't trust green tea for weight loss. Although it can aid your process, if you drink too much too often, it may not help and maybe even make it worse. It is very good to drink a good amount of water, but water Does cause water weight. I do not suggest cutting out water though, it's not bad to have a little water weight. These things take time, so be patient with it. It also depends on the exercising you do. Certain ones get rid of fat in certain places. Walking a lot, like maybe 45-60 minutes a day can really improve your health and even help a little in weight loss. I suggest looking into some healthy weight loss techniques to help you with it if you don't start to see improvement. Btw, there are some health conditions that prevent weight loss, so you should look into that too if it takes a long time.
Hope this helps~
