Like many words, the term "love" has been so overused and so casually used that it has lost some of the magic it once had.
However, the reality is that the old adage "actions speak louder than words" is completely true, and when it comes to the case of love, this might just be the prefect example.
Anyone can simply mouth the words "I love you," but without actions to back them up, they are essentially empty and meaningless.
So, to get to the point, the way to tell if he really loves you is by the thinks he does, not the words he says.

As everyone else has said you don't. Love is not just words; in it is less words and more actions than anything else. Is he kind and considerate to you? Does he listen to your opinions or just blow them off. Will he sit there and let you vent when you need to.
When you go to the movies do you go to movies you want to see or just the ones he wants to see? Being in love means he will sit through a romance movie when he would rather be watching an action movie.
IF he is a teenage boy and he constantly tells you he loves you then you need to beware for teenage boys confuse LUST and LOVE. For them it is all hormonal.
The old saying that; "Actions speak louder the words," is very appropriate when it comes to matters of the heart. How he acts when he is with you should tell you if he is really in love with you.
The fact that you are asking this question of us tells me you doubt his sincerity for some reason. Trust your instincts for they are generally correct. Don't give your heart away easily for it can easily be broken. When it is broken it will mend but it is painful at first.

I'm with Giddygeezer, you cant. There is no way to know. Words are cheap. Anyone can say anything about themselves in a job interview and get the job. But it's in the boss's experiences with a new employee where He will know if the employee is everything they said they are or not.
So that translates to 'the proof of his love is in how he treats you, not just when everything is rosy, but when he's tired, sick, or you are and perhaps there is stress from school or work or financial. No matter what else is going on around you and him, does he treat you in a loving way, consistantly, never changing? Then you can know from his actions, that he loves you.

There are other ways people show their love besides simply stating it. You should see how he treats you and acts around you. Does he care for you? Gets worried if you're hurt or in pain? Does he go out of his way to help you out? Try to see how much he does for you and you'll be able to tell if he does love you.

Well, you don't. That is why it is very important to get to know someone and to know their character. If you have known him for a while and he isn't in the habit of lying and he isn't saying it while he's trying to talk you into sex then there is a pretty good chance he means it!
