I am a high school senior and I cannot imagine any more of this hell. Sitting in a classroom being lectured about irrelevant information is not in any way fulfilling or satisfying to me. The idea that I am stuck going to class every day for the next portion of my life is almost too much for me to handle. The "core curriculum" sounds like death and I do not want to spend the entirety of my young life being lectured and assigned readings over western civilization in the precolombian times.
I thought this feeling would end once I graduated HS but I know now that is not going to be the case.
I want to go out and make a difference in someone's life. I want to travel, photograph, listen to music, meet people, and just make something of my life. I cannot handle irrelevant classes and busy work for 4 more years without going insane and becoming clinically depressed.
Not going to college is not an option so don't suggest that.

I wish when high school finished for me that my life plans could just be handed down to me. Trust me, I hate the core curriculum bullcrap that colleges force down every students throat. It's overwhelming and I've even had times where I've had a break down because it's just too much. College isn't easy (I think we both know that) but it can be rewarding. I don't know where you go to college or what you are majoring in but maybe the college you are at isn't giving you what you want. Or maybe what you're majoring in isn't really what you aspire to be. Maybe look around at other colleges and find what interests you. If you like photography, I highly suggest looking into a photography school. Also, many people believe that when they go to college they have to know what they want to do as soon as they start college. That's not true. It's okay to be undecided. It allows you to try different things and find out what interests you more.

First no one is mandating specifically what course you are going to take. You mention photograph as a passion. Maybe photo journalism is a course of study for you to follow. If so you would chose courses based on that course of study. YEs there will be some prerequisite course you will need to take in Math and English. Though even in these prerequisite course there are going to be choices and you can chose when to take them. There is no "Core Curriculum" as it is being used in the primary education grades.
Next you will not be taking the same classes 5 days a week. Most classed meet 2 or maybe 3 days a week for an hour and a half to three hours. You will not be forced to take irrelevant course. By choosing your major course of study even your prerequisite courses will have relevance to your major course of study.
Depending on how heavy a course load you take you will or should have time for a social life. College wants you to have a social life for this two is all part of the college experience. It is all part of what makes someone who has gone to college a more rounded individual than someone who has not.
Now if your goals in life call are that of a tradesman; then you should be looking at a Technical Trades school. Schools in this realm range from culinary arts to xylophone repair. Computer repair, Plumber, Electrician are skilled trades that have good incomes.
You say not going to college is not an option. Then also not an option is going off to college without knowing what you're going to major in. For not knowing what you're going to major in means that you're first year of college is going to mean taking just the liberal arts course. From what you have written you are going to hate that and you will have wasted your first year of school. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]

However if you are tired of learning in a 'school' setting, then perhaps you are looking to learn through "a different cultural life experience." You mentioned things like travel, meeting people. So maybe doing some travel in Europe perhaps? There are plenty of people who have done that first upon graduating from high school. It is easier to do that kind of travel then, rather than wait til later hoping to do it when other responsibilities are tying you down so its harder to get away. Perhaps to get the needed money to get you going on travel you'll need to work for a while. When you come back you can still go to college.
Or there's always the possibility of becoming an exchange student and going to college in another country. It may not be enough time to get into one by Fall but its a thought to find one and get accepted there.Until the point college starts, go work full time or part time and take some college courses part time at the local community college. You still have time to do want you want like making a difference and travel this summer. Com'on man two months left and you are going to escape from that misery.
Life ln college is totally different from highschool.
Yeh, western civilization sucks and we don't need to learn that thingy literally as we won't apply it to real world. But you have nothing to do with it except being a magnet on your chair and listen or else do more stuffs instead of studying.
Everything should be in balanced. Balance your studies and social life. Improce yourself and make a difference by joining extra-curriculars by vonlunteering and donating to charity. Your life sucks but you can still spice it up sweetie.
solidadvice4teens answered Monday March 31 2014, 7:42 pm: College isn't like high school. When you apply for the program you want to do all of the courses are relevant to it.
You may have to do 1 or 2 college English courses during a 3-4 year program but the thrust is on your field of study almost all the time with a community college.
University is different as yes you have to study irrelevant material as part of what your degree say you must have to graduate.
It sounds as though what you need to do is take a year off and decide what you truly want to do with your life during that time. Travel now, take the photography classes that will make you happy, experience music, theater and culture and relax for awhile.
I doubt your parents will mind much if they know you intend on going to college but have no idea what you want to study yet and need to explore it further. After all, you are spending their money so best to get it right.
It's NOT courses or school that makes you clinically depressed. It's an illness and sure these things don't help but do not cause it. If you feel depressed, aren't interested in much that you used to or feel trapped, unable to function see a doctor. It can make a big difference for you.
