Help with food?

Question Posted Thursday August 8 2013, 10:32 pm

(Yes I'm aware this isn't a "food" site but this is really my only option. Sorry if this question offends/bothers anyone in any way.)

Hello, so I'm a new vegan and I don't really know what to eat... I know to avoid animal products such as meat, milk, etc., but I'm finding it very hard to find foods.

I'm not really much of a "cook" person, but I suppose I can be. Can you all help me with some recipes, vegan name brands, and stuff to eat? I already eat fruits and things. Thanks :)

Don't listen to anyone who says being vegan is unhealthy! My cousin's girlfriend is vegan, and she almost always places in her Iron Mans! But, it is hard to keep up with (I stayed with them for a weekend). I honestly don't know any recipies, But I know some foods. Almond milk is vegan and veryy good, as are certain 'Fiber Well' cereals. --hope I helped.

ps: Oreos are vegan friendly!!

When my niece was your age she decided to go Vegan because of things she learned in school. She didn't stay vegan for too long for several reasons.

1) Like you at the time she wasn't a cooking type person. My brother in-law who does all the cooking said he would teach her how to cook the food she wanted but he would not cook a separate make just for her. It was not right of her to ask for a special meal since there was no medical reason for it. This was simply her choice.

2) True vegan meals if not properly cooked can be very tasteless. Flavor additives are needed to bring out tastes in such things as Tofu which is a protein replacement. Vegetables need to be properly seasoned and prepared to bring out the taste and texture you want. A properly prepared vegan burger tastes burger tastes very close to hamburger. But you have a lot of prep work to get that taste and texture.

30 Some of the more exotic vegetables and things Vegans eat are way more expensive than regular items as they are almost all organically grown as well.

While I understand your desire to follow the vegan diet. Understand you are asking a lot of mom and dad from the aspect of meal preparation for you and the cost of your food. It would be a lot easier on them and you if you eased into this by going vegetarian first. This gives you much more leeway in things you can eat and is a lot less expensive for mom and dad on their food budget. It also means they won't always have to make a special meal for you. At some point in meal preparation they can separate a portion for you and finish it vegetarian instead of with the protein meat they all are having.

To answer your question directly: There are many good books on the subject of Vegan meals and diets at your local Library and bookstore.

You need to talk to your doctor or a nutritionist to make sure that you won't make yourself ill, especially given your age on this site. You're still growing, and malnourishment at this point in your life could cause stunted growth. It's possible to make yourself very ill if you don't take care of your needs. I'm no expert, but I know that veggie proteins are incomplete (compared to meat proteins which are complete) and that you have to balance them.

What I do know: steer clear of the processed garbage. Make friends with tofu, peanut butter (the all-natural kind!), lentils, beans, chickpeas, quinoa and other protein sources. Don't rely on fake meat for your protein... it should be a once-in-a-while thing, not your base. It's expensive, and not that great for you.

Learn to love veggies. A lot of vegans end up eating a ton of peanut butter sandwiches, which isn't exactly healthy! I have a vegan coworker, and I'm jealous of her lunch just about every day. She eats great salads packed with nutrients. I know you say you're not the cooking type, but you'll want to learn. It's easy to find simple vegan recipes online. For example, here's a Buzzfeed article with 30 recipes that take less than 30 minutes:

Most of all, make sure you're doing this right. Going vegan can be a very healthy choice, but it can also be very bad for you. It all depends on how you approach it.

You are going to have trouble following a special diet if you are not a "cook" person. Buying preprepared, processed foods kinda defeats the purpose. Boiling some pumpkin and mashing it is not that hard. Neither is slicing a tomato, adding salt, pepper, and fresh basil and putting it on some appropriately vegan bread substitute.

If you're determined to feed the processed food business, go have a look at tinned soup. Read the labels, and get familiar with what the numbers mean.

But seriously - learn to boil, and maybe fry w/ some olive oil. It ain't rocket science.

Hello

Here's a list

Tofu, Soy cheese, Veggies and Fruits are good, Soy milk, Rice milk, There is also Tempeh and TVP (meatless meat that can be order at bulkfoods.com) good in chili, stir fry etc. Veggie burgers and even tofu ham, deli meat in the section where you find the tofu. Tofu dogs, Tofu nuggets and chicken wings unfortunately everything but the tofu is a whopping $5.50... yikes!

So play around with tofu, fruits and veggies. ;-)
