I feel like I am being watched

Question Posted Monday August 1 2011, 11:23 pm

I honestly feel like my step brother has hooked up a hidden camera in my room. His friends will come over and they have this name that they call me, and i'm pretty sure it involves what I do in the privacy of my room. I have looked up how to detect a hidden camera but I don't even know where to begin looking. Like the internet says they can be hidden in tvs and vcrs but how the heck are you supposed to open a vcr or tv to find a camera? I want to confront my mom about it but she'll just think im crazy, and she'll ask me why I think theres a hidden camera in my room and I really dont want to explain the meaning behind their joke.. What do I do? How do I know if theres a camera in my room? I mean, the internet also says "look for any red or green dots" well my tv has a red light on it but it came like that and so does my dvd player, and dvr. Please someone help. I am at a loss and I just want to get to the end of this and find out if there really is a camera in my room. Oh and how long does it take to even hook up a hidden camera?

I suppose you will have to sneak into your brother's room when he is not home. If he hid a wireless camera there will need to be a receiver connected to his computer, it will probably be a USB device. Even wireless cams need power, so look for cables or plugs. If he hid a small video cam, he'd have to go to your room to retrieve it to download and watch the video. You could always set up something to see if he moves your things or even enters your room. Put a small piece of paper in the door, or arrange your items in a specific way etc. If you discover anything you may wish to tell your parents and maybe they would allow you to put a lock on your door.

Technically, your brother and his friends would be guilty of creating child porn, illegal wiretapping and criminal harassment. All are serious felonies. Confront your brother about this and give him a chance to either confess in front of your parents or you will call the police and fuck up everybody's life forever. And yes, their lives will be over since your brother and his friends will become level three sex offenders and have to register as such wherever they live in the future.

After he confesses to your parents, leave it up to them to handle it.

If you're wrong, though, you're not only going to look like a colossal jackass, but you're probably going to get your ass kicked between now and the end of high school. So your choice.

well... how else would they know your ''name called'' its either what the other said your brothers.. or what you said a camera.. or somehow they have a hole they peak in...what about your computer webcam.. people can hack on and see everything without you knowing.. also, try to find wires like they said before and if your not using anything TURN IT ALL OFF! everything.. look and take it apart.. both vcr and tv and computer.. but remember maybe its hidden somewhere ese? you never know.. maybe in your closet? or somehow in your bed? remeber they called you a name.. you should think of what angle and what place they could see you with the camera if they said that...
if it happens still again go talk to your mom... tell her because she NEEDS to know

There are a lot of factors at play here. If you feel you are being spied upon then the possibility you are is high. Leaving the legal problems involved aside for the moment, your step-brother, if it is him, is invading your privacy. For this reason alone you need to tell your mother regardless of how embarrassing you may be in telling her. You are entitled to your privacy and on moral grounds alone he is wrong.

One place to look if you have not already done so and if your room is accessible from the attic or attic craw space. Is to look up there. Be careful, all you need to do is poke your head up and look to see if there are wires coming from your room to his. They will be thin wires much different in size from any other wires that you may see in the attic. They will most likely be laying loose on the floor of the attic.

Now to the legal side of the coin. Depending on your ages and if the police are needed to find the spy cam. There is the possibility of child pornography, child abuse, sexual predator and pedophile charges that can be brought against your step-brother. He could be forced to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. These are life altering real world serious charges you can bring if the police are brought in to hunt for and find a spy camera.

Please talk to your mom. The fact that you perceive being spied upon makes it real. Therefor she needs to do something. Even if that something is to ask the police for help.

Before you go hunting around for hidden cameras, you might want to consider that there's a simpler possibility; your brother and his friends might be spying on you the old-fashioned way, WITHOUT hidden cameras, just by looking in the window or something. If the only evidence you have is the name they call you, which is based on something you do in private, there are two possibilities - they've seen you doing whatever it is, or it's just a coincidence. If it's the first, then they only had to see you doing it ONCE - they may not still be watching.

Hidden cameras do exist, but they tend to be expensive. Your brother would have to be pretty obsessed with you to drop the necessary coin on a truly hidden camera (the kind that parents use to watch the babysitters, for instance). To do it cheaply, he'd have to use a webcam, and those have cables. So look for the wire, not the camera.

But I don't think you'll find it. People have been looking through windows or cracks in the door long before anyone invented the hidden camera, and that's still the way siblings tend to spy on each other. It's quicker, cheaper, easier, and leaves a lot less evidence to be found.

Oh, and don't go searching his room unless you have a lot stronger evidence, or that makes YOU the one spying on HIM - and he won't like it any more than you do.

Can you look in HIS room? Because he must have something that he is watching it on/getting the feed on. If possible, can u check his computer while he's out one day? See if you find some video of you on there. Also look places that would have a good angle to see you from, imagine you are looking down into the room. What's the best angle to see the whole room from? Look in stuffed animals, in between books, on shelves. Is anything moved in there? Anything look different. Even if you can't find it you really do need to tell your mother. I know it will be embarrassing - perhaps you can think of a lie to cover the REAL reason for the name - but if your stepbrother has a camera in there, that's kind of scary and really gross. And he's showing friends? That is such dangerous behavior. People get arrested for that kind of stuff. If you are underage it counts as child pornography, and I don't need to tell you that is really, really dangerous. You have to tell someone. Your privacy is being violated. You can't feel safe or respected in your own home. I know its hard, but tell someone, anyone, even if its not your mom first. Tell a trusted adult. Maybe they can go with you to approach your mom. She'll take you more seriously if she sees you were worried enough to talk to someone. This is a terrible situation. You don't deserve this. Oh, also, try taking the tv & vcr out of your room for a while, see what happens. If stepbrother asks too many questions, you can be sure it was in there. But if he did it once, he'll do it again, so really you do have to tell someone.
Sorry, I meant to add that hidden cameras are super cheap and easy to come by these days, so you are not crazy for wondering. I found some "spy pens" w/ cameras online for $40. Here's the link to check it out [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
don't second guess yourself. Trust your instincts.
