Need money NOW!!!

Question Posted Tuesday June 28 2011, 6:45 pm

I'm a twelve year old girl and need cash...fast.
I owe:
$29 to my mom for not returning books borrowed from the library using her card
$6 more to my mom for breaking her compact powder (I'm clumsy)
$10.65 to library for books not returned
I also need a lot of extra cash because we're taking a trip in five days. My mom deprived me of $50 (birthday money I just got yesterday) because of the $35 I owe her. Add in all those expenses and that leaves me with... negative $90.35. ( I have $5) I also need to buy summer clothes (my closet is full of sweatshirts and long pants). Help!!!!!!! :(

if i waas in your position right now i would talk to my mom and say " mom you know i cant make all this money" and see what she says and try to make a deal with her! maybe for everything you do around the house she can pay you, an allowance, ( i know she wont be getting the money back because shes paying you and your giving it right back) but at least your being resposible and trying to help and do the right thing. tell your mom how sorry you are and it will never happen again ( and make sure it doesnt so she doesnt yell at you or anything haha)

or maybe help your grandparents, or any family members and they an pay you. hope i helped and good luck(:

I'm all for parents teaching their children to have respect for money and teaching them how to handle money. From what you have written here there is something not right going on. What have you left out?

First what is the -$90.35 all about? Why and how do you owe this to your mom. How does you mom expect you to pay these sums back to her as you are only 12 and cannot legally hold a job or even baby sit in most states?

As a parent I am legally responsible for my children's debts, all of that you listed except the broken compact, as well as clothing , feeding and housing my children. Just what is it your mother is providing for you? What does she expect for you to provide for yourself and how does she expect you to pay for those things?

If you can write back and answer those questions I may be able to give you some advice as to what you should do.

You are only 12 years old, Your mother should be buying clothes for you not the other way around.

If you need money here are some ideas:

You could offer to do chores around the house for an allowance money.

Dog walking

You could make something and try to sell that too

You shouldn't owe your mother anything, You are a child and as a parent your mother should be providing YOU not you providing her by paying back money you supposedly owe her.

grownups love to see kids show initiative. You could put out little flyers saying you will weed your neighbors flower beds, you can bake cookies and sell them, you can offer to wash your neigbors car, water their lawn, walk their dog. Each neighbor is going to have a different need, so think of what they might need done and offer. I bet most will say yes.

it sounds to me you only owe 10.65 which you already have 5 dollars of. your best bet at your age is to stay away from the library if you cant return the books help elderly people at the grocery store takes there stuff to their car load it for them, mow lawns or weeding gardens. your not going to get a real job your way to young.

so your mom took $50 from you, but you "owed" her $35... sounds to me like now SHE actually owes you $15.

okay, this depends entirely on your mom, whom i know nothing about, but she's your MOM, she should be able to understand if you calmly explain your situation to her. ask her if you could do some extra chores for a set price per hour to make up those $35 you owe her, and upon completion give you back your $50. if she agrees, let her set the price per hour and do the required work before you have to leave on the trip. then you'll have $55 again. if she doesn't agree, then at least reason with her that since you owed her $35, and she took $50 from you, it would be fair if you got your $15 back, that would at least allow you to pay back your library fees.

your mom can't possibly expect you to buy all your own clothes? i know sometimes it's really hard to prove to your parents that you need clothes, but i think you should be able to reason with her for at least a limited sum, such as $30. of course, bring that up after you've completed your extra chores to get your birthday money back. with that money you can try going to a thrift store - i know it sounds totally uncool, but college students LOVE thrift stores, and if you dig long enough you will find something nice that no one will be able to tell isn't new. $30 in a thrift store is enough to buy you 5-8 clothing items.
