My Status in School

Question Posted Wednesday November 3 2010, 11:40 pm

I am a graduating high school student. During my elementary, I graduated as a valedictorian. that is why My parents are expecting me to do good in school and get good grades. Now, I got a grade of 77 in calculus and if they'll learn about it, they would surely be mad at me. I don't know what to do. I love my parents and I did my best but I'm not really good in math. I could not let them down... Please give me advice on what to do/say and perhaps some good study habits in Math because I think it might help.

Well, you could always explain to your parents your problem and that your not doing to well in math and they could get you a private tutor.

You could ask your teacher if she/he could explain some things to do that you don't understand.

You could practise whatever you learn in math that day after school. Maybe do some excersises from the textbook. Studying sucks, but it truly helps.

For example, I have got a science test tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I will fail so I am going to study like crazy. Boring, but good in the long run.

Good Luck :)

i'm actually in calculus right now and i have a B in that class. (82%) and i come from a very large high school which is very successful in academics and athletics. So in my school, a C or even a B, is considered a bad grade compared to other schools. My entire freshman and sophomore year, i had a 3.8 GPA. this year it will go down because of my grade in calculus. I actually came home crying one day because i got a C on my test and my parents were upset but they understood it was a very advanced class and difficult. they told me to try my best and they would still be proud of me no matter what.

so try going up to your parents and telling them that you tried your best and they should be proud of you for working hard and trying to be the best.

if they still don't support you, try giving them a math problem and see if they can solve it. if they cant, say- "its not as easy as it looks" if they can- just give them a harder one until they get stumped. unless they are math geniuses, it shouldn't be too hard to prove your point.

A 77% is not a bad grade in calculus! Calc is very hard, and my mom even suggests me not taking it and taking another course instead. Its very hard, and a C+ in that class is pretty darn good.

Tell your parents you tried your best. They love you, and even if they get mad at you, they can't stay mad at you for long. Tell them you'll try and do better next semester.

A 77% mark is NOTHING to sneeze at. Absolutely nothing. It's above average and in a subject they know you aren't good in. If you worked your butt off for it than that's all that matters.

You tried your very best and can't do more than that. Even if you had a tutor it's too late in the game to make it any higher. Your parents wold be too unreasonable if they applied pressure and didn't like that mark. Don't worry about it.

You may want to be valedictorian but grades alone doesn't influence that. They look at character the most. Even then with all the graduates there will be you can't predict their choice. Your odds regardless of grades of losing out is high.

It's not the end of the world if you don't get chosen even if your parents act like it. It often goes to the student who never campaigned or showed interest in it anyways. It won't affect your future or ability to get into X, Y or Z school.

Like I said, if any parent launched a tirade against a kid over a 77% grade in any subject they need their head checked as that's a really good mark.

If they did that than they're giving you too much pressure and setting things up for you to be too wound up. This is what makes you unfocused and unable to do anything related to that or other subjects without fear.

Accept the 77% and don't worry about the rest as really all that matters is that you tried hard. After June of this year nobody will care what you got as you moved on to better things.

It really doesn't matter if you graduated elementary as a valedictorian. No one will ask you that (like an employer) and elementary isn't the hardest thing ever, at least compared to high school. Unless you went to a super advanced school? I don't know why your parents are putting so much weight on it.

You are going to have to accept that you can't please your parents all the time. It will come back to bite you, whether it's the person you're dating or the major or job you wanna pick. So you might as well start now, with this math grade you got.

However, if you really do want to bring your math grade up, google "khanacademy" and you'll find some good videos, and ask your teacher for extra credit. But do it for yourself, not your parents :)
