what to bring to class

Question Posted Tuesday August 24 2010, 10:18 am

I know this is kind of a dumb question but what do you bring to class in college? I was thinking like my computer, the textbook, a binder with some paper, a pencil, highlighter, and some pens, and a calculator for the math like classes. Do I really have to bring that much?

Its basically like high school... but here is some stuff i bring to school because you'll need it.

**flash drive... start saving all ur work that is done online in college... you'll never know when you'll need it and also it keeps life organized...

**tape recorder... some professors talk really fast and its inpossible to copy everything there saying... this way you can get all the info and even play it back to urself instead of reading...

**highlighters! highlight everything you feel that is important to you that ull need!

**planner... keep everything organized with school work and social events.

For a lecture, bring pen and paper for note taking, and a folder to hold any handouts that you may receive. If you want to take notes with a computer, that should be fine too, but be careful not to get distracted by the other things on the computer. (I often see people playing games or watching videos during lectures. Don't do that.)

Some lecturers may also expect you to print out lecture slides. If there is a website for any of your classes, check for those.

You will probably be expected to read the relevant parts of your textbook before the lecture, but you probably don't need to bring it.

For a tutorial, again, pen and paper. If you do anything that involves maths, bring the calculator too. You may also need the textbook if your tutorial involves doing problems that are given in the book. If not, check if you need to print out any problem sets.

Talk to whoever is kind of in charge and ask if computers are allowed. if they are, bring your computer anyway.

For the first day, just a notebook, pen or pencil, and maybe the textbook, then you'll probably figure out what you need. None of my teachers have allowed computers, though.

Generally the computer only comes to class if you are going to be taking notes on it. Some schools encourage that, others are not so fond. Professors vary.

I suggest you take everything but the computer to your first classes where you'll get the lay of the land.
