Trying to decide if I should support religion and which one
Question Posted Sunday June 27 2010, 10:12 pm
I am a 23 year old female and I was raised Christian in a very religious family. As I grew up and started to form my own opinion I decided to not refer to myself as a Christian. I have not been to church since I turned 18 and moved out. I believe in God 100% but I do not believe in Christianity. I feel as if apart of me doesn't believe in religion. I'm trying to decide if maybe I just haven't been exposed to the right religion. Or maybe I shouldn't classify myself as one religion. Maybe I should just love God, live right, and treat people good and not study one religion. What should I do?

JesusFreakGirl answered Wednesday July 14 2010, 12:00 am: Religion is man's attempt at God. What God wants is us to have a Relationship with Him. You say you believe in God 100%. Jesus is God's Son, He was sent to earth to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Anyone who says that they are a sinner and ask Jesus to forgive them will be forgiven and can have a relationship with God (The ONLY way to have a true relationship with God is through His Son, Jesus). Ready for the most quoted scripture known to man? John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." God loves you and wants a relationship with you, and you can't have that relationship without Christ.
My advice to you is to study the Bible. Don't look at it as if it were some rule book that people are forcing you to abide by, but read it like it is a love letter written for you by a Loving Father.
If you are turned off by Christianity, then you need to meet a different group of Christians. Loving people who follow God.

That's what I do because I don't believe everything I hear either. Like you I believe in God 2000000% and that he gave his only begotten son, Jesus and all that good stuff....Ultimately, God will lead the way in what he wants you to believe. Just keep the faith.... I understand to some degree where you are coming from and this is a subject that is hard for most people to talk about let alone get any guidance about.
This is not something someone here can answer for you, because what is right for one may not be right for someone else.
Take some time and go and research, visit other church's or worship halls and see what they offer and what fits with what you are looking for. There is so much to learn and I have found that learning about other religions, enjoy this experience!
Joelous answered Tuesday June 29 2010, 3:58 pm: It is not about what you're named, it's not about how "good" you are.
the church has become so corrupted, not all of course, but many are being mislead. esp with this whole entertain me movement and i'll go to church.
it's about your relationship with Jesus, not with the preacher, not with other christians (not that unity is bad, unity is good) but Jesus is the key answer.
His mission was accomplished at the cross, His resurrection-- and us to believe to take our sins
putting one foot over the fence isn't going to save you, you need to be on one side or the other.
hot or cold, not lukewarm.
it is not us that saves us, but the grace of God that saves us,(He) putting it in our heart.
and He being God knows his, so to know if you're his, give your whole heart to Jesus, believe
call yourself Magarieistismboary
but make sure the word of the bible isn't changed
that your relationship with Jesus remains
Jesus is God
the church is here to have unity in those that also believe, if you want nothing to do with those that also believe, question who you are..
I myself don't partake in church activities, but that doesn't make me an unbeliever, however I do attend church Sundays.. not because I force myself, but out of desire. Most importantly Read the Word [ Joelous's advice column | Ask Joelous A Question ]
DangerNerd answered Tuesday June 29 2010, 3:24 am: You know, there is one thing that nobody mentioned yet and that is that most people who call themselves Christians are either deceived or flatly lying.
I understand right where you are coming from. I had the good fortune to stumble into this:
Once you realize that Christ said EXACTLY what he expected of his followers, and somehow almost nobody these days does any of these things... you start asking questions.
... and that was the thing that really drove the point home: People can call themselves whatever they like, but unless they meet the qualifications for the title they gave themselves, they aren't what they say.
So here I was realizing that I was deciding Christians were full of it... when I didn't even know what it really was to be a Christian.
I promise if you listen to the first link you will want to read the second, and no matter what you decide you will be smarter about this so that if anyone ever challenges your decisions you will be able to give exact reasons for your choices.
People who make decisions they can't explain reasons for come across as idiots. Been there, done that. ;-)
Please let me know what you think after you have listened to to the first link and hopefully read the second.
I would LOVE to hear your feedback on either or both. Why? Because I have been right there with you.
I found myself going God just can't be like the people I know from Churches. So Christians must be false, and church is bogus. Turns out those people that turned me off to Christ didn't know the first thing about being a Christian.
SilkStuy answered Monday June 28 2010, 4:06 pm: Too harsh, Sardine.
Religion has always been a sensitive issue for all of us. Coming from a half muslim half catholic family, things could get pretty messy.
I suggest that you do some research on your own because people are more likely to be bias, and would most likely support their own religion. And I meant real research, don't just google it.
And your sentence "maybe I should love God, live right, and treat people good and not study one religion", in my opinion, makes you a better person compared to those guided with religion but holds none of those values you spoke of.
sarline answered Monday June 28 2010, 12:17 pm: HI, I respect your decision,
But how can you say you Believe 100% and then ignore his religion, which is Christianity. His son was Christian and HE is too. You said you were raised in a very religious family right? then you should be a Christian. Not going to church is one of the way you start doubting your religion, whereas if you went, then you would be 100% sure of what you should be. Love God, live right, and treat people good is one part of being a Christian. but going to church is the other part because it's where there truly teach you on how to be closer to God and being a true Christian. Lrockz answered Monday June 28 2010, 11:00 am: hello,
i think religion is whatever you want it to be everyone is different in this world no matter what anyone says (even your family) you do what you think is best,
i believe in god, i do, but i don’t go to a church or anything and my parents don’t believe in god, but even if you do believe like i do that does not mean you have to do certain things,
god will always be with you,
and really if you think about it if you want to love god then do but don’t feel like you NEED to as you really don’t, you should really live right, and treat people nicely anyway, just a part of life, and you don’t need to study a religion if you don’t want to you should know what sort of thing you believe in even if it’s a mixture of everything, it does not matter :)
hope this helps
good luck [ Lrockz's advice column | Ask Lrockz A Question ]
