Dogs that don't shed and are good with children?

Question Posted Tuesday February 16 2010, 8:39 pm

Hello!

I want to get a dog for my children to grow up with but I need a dog breed that is safe for kids and hopefully one that doesn't shed.

Is there such a dog?

Thank you!

Smaller breeds are difficult to train. Most are not recommended with children at all.
If you want a good trainable, smart dog look for a larger breed.

I highly recommend the Doberman Pinscher.
They are a medium large size breed and dont shed a lot at all.
Ive had a black and tan doberman and never saw any fur on me unless he was on my lap for too long, but when there was it definitly wasnt much at all.
They are exteremly loveable dogs, and very, very smart. They have been lead to believe that they are vicious and aggressive but just like any other dog, they only get like this because of poor training by its owner. They are great with children, and are known to watch over them and protect them, hence they are good watch dogs when it comes to their family. They have wonderful personalities, playful, alert, obidient, also quite humerous. They have been known to have people-like personalities.
I gaurantee you will love this breed!

I would go for a bigger breed dog, more often than not they are better with children because they are sturdier. Newfoundlands, beagles, Golden Retrievors, etc are some good dogs for families. Also maybe an adult dog from your local shelter, mutts are often the best dogs. Also when the dog is grown you will already know its personality & how it is with children other dogs, strangers. If you decide to get a purebred dog, then I would be very careful, find a responsible breeder. This is crucial, because you will want an even temperment, some breeds due to overbreeding are having temperments that are not stable. When getting a dog you need to look at the exercise requirements that the breed of dog will get, look at its energy levels, grooming needs, personality etc. How much exercise will you be willing to give?
Dogster.com is an amazing website to get on when looking for a dog, they can give you great advice on breeds, help you find a shelter or responsible breeder, etc.

Mostly all small dog breeds do not shed. I have a West Highland Terrier, and she is really playful and cuddly. She does not shed & is great for smaller children. Also, medium sized dogs live the longest, & you don't have to worry about them getting weak or sick as much as big & tea cup dogs do.

The only time I would say my dog wasn't 'safe' is when she was a puppy and teething, but of course, that goes away.

Good luck. :))

Alright, Supposedly Poodles don't shed, and they are hypo-allergetic. I have a Golden Doodle--a Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle mix. He doesn't shed like most dogs, he has black curly fur, and we get him groomed regularly, I know that all dogs shed, but you don't find his fur on your clothes or couch, etc, but You'll find little fluff balls under the couches or tables, etc. sweeping takes care of that. and he is wonderful with kids :) :) unfortunately this kind of dog isn't too common here, labradoodles are a little more common, which would be the labrador Retriever mix with a poodle.

Dogue de Bordeaux, LABRADOR RETRIEVER, and Newfoundland are probably the three safest dogs to go with. As for the shedding part, unfortunately all dogs shed, it can't be helped. However I found that short haired dogs seem to shed easier than long haired ones. I'd still recommend getting your daughter(if you have one) to play "barbie" with the dog and brush him gently once a day outside. Ideal if you do decide to get a short-haired dog because she won't pull at their long hair and because they won't shed everywhere. Have one room the dog can stay in during the day. My dog sleeps in the children's room at night so it's their duty to vacuum once a week. Getting a dog is a great idea. It teaches children discipline and a gentle nature. If you have any questions about dogs that are BAD with kids let me know! Safety first! Hope I helped! xxx
