What is the best small pet to own?

Question Posted Wednesday October 14 2009, 12:29 am

I want to have a pet. I'm not talking about cats or dogs though. I would like a small pet that can be kept in a cage. My parents are divorced and I spend one weekend a month with my dad and would want to take the pet with me.

I'd like a fairly intelligent pet. Something that isn't too smelly would be nice. I have heard things about Chinchillas being cute but I have read plenty of times that they are very fragile. I don't want a fragile pet. Cute isn't REALLY important though.

I can do a few hours of maintenance a day with the pet so if it needs walks or playtime that is just fine with me. A friendly animal would be nice...something that could get used to being held sometimes.

My best friend suggested getting a rat but I'm not sure. What would you suggest?

I would suggest a hamster. They're fairly cheap (around $11-12 at Petco) BUT when you buy the cage, the food, the bedding, the hiding house, the chew toys, etc, it can get pretty pricy. They're awesome though.

They don't take much care. You can clean the cage everyday if you like, but you can also clean it once a week. Giving them chew toys will prevent them from biting on their cage. Get them a ball so they can roll around for a bit since being in a cage constantly is tiring. Refill their food everyday & you're set.

Hamsters are fun & cute, so I would recommend that. Just make sure you take good care of them because poor care will cause them to die. They live for around 2 years with proper care.

guinea pigs are loads of fun, not too bad on maintenance, and almost as cool as ferrets. plus, they make cool noises, and in a pinch, are edible. I used to make mazes with cardboard for them, quite intelligent little things.
stick to mammals, not only are they easier to maintain, but also won't make people get that whole "creepy person" vibe from you. Charlie sheen once said "a chick with birds or snakes is crazy" and I concur.

Rats are amazing pets. It is true that you need to clean their cage fairly often, but that's pretty much the case with most caged animals. I've had tons of rats, & they are one of the best types of pets I've had, & I've had tons of pets. I will say, though, that if you don't handle them frequently (at least a few times a week), they can get mean at times, but usually they're great. I had one once that, if I let him out to play in a blocked off area, he would just crawl up on my lap & sit there the whole time.

Degus are pretty good pets, if you can find one, but I'd still go with a rat instead.

I also have a bearded dragon & they are one of the best types of lizards to have as pets. Unfortunately, they need special lighting, a certain size tank, & crickets along with veggies and pellets. Also, their tanks need to be cleaned frequently. If you have the time & money to devote to them, they're great. Mine has never bit me, & like the rat, he loves to fall asleep on my chest.

RECOMMENDED:

Hamster: Easy to clean and don't require a ton of attention also easy to travel with.

Rats are also good traveling pets, I also had a rat myself and it wasn't that hard to keep up with but I also want to point out that Rats also can have a nasty odor and will need frequent cage cleaning

NOT RECOMMEND:

Chinchillas: are cute and not only fragile but they are extremely messy and they do not like to be held a lot of the time.

Bunnies: are a cute too but I owned 5 at one time and they are extremely messy and can be hard to keep up with and do not like loud noises which could be a problem if you plan on traveling with it.

Ferret: Ferrets are great pets but require a lot of attention, frequent baths, walks, and their cage needs a lot of cleaning. They also sleep during the day and play at a night. Unless you are fully committed to all of that this pet is not recommended.
