Hello.

I was a freshman three years ago- and I have to say.. it was one of the most scary things I've EVER experienced! I was thrown in the trash can on the first day and it was horrible. Some kid even had to go to the emergency room! It was the WORST first day of school of my entire life! I almost didn't go back!

Haha- so hopefully you didn't take that seriously- because it really wasn't like that at all. I always play that trick on people who ask this question. C'mon- I gotta have a little fun! High school is NOT scary. It actually is a lot more fun. You have more freedoms than middle school and you can take REALLY awesome classes. If you have to chance to take a Speech class- DO IT! You think it will be the dumbest class ever and you'll be really bored- but you get the chance to get really good at speeches- and you'll learn really awesome things! When you get to be a Junior/Senior- take AP and Honors classes- these will impress colleges and they will want you to go to their college if you do well enough on them.

People may tell you that Freshmen year doesn't count for anything- so slacking off won't matter until you're an upperclassmen. This is wrong. Colleges will look at your cumulative GPA- and that includes your freshmen year. Don't slack off; you'll regret it later.

Just to debunk the rumor- There is NOT a "Freshmen Friday". Sure, this used to exist back in the 60s and 70s, but it doesn't anymore. Any school that actually still does it will probably end up getting sued by a bunch of parents. So most don't do it. Chances are, your high school won't do it.

Here is my list of DOs and DON'Ts:

Do:
-Do all of your homework.
-Make new friends [some old ones will naturally just fade away] and do this by just starting up simple conversations with people- and it will eventually lead to a great friendship. Ask someone you may want to get to know for a pencil in class.. that's a classic. Sit with new people at lunch.
-Ask the teacher for help if you need it.

Don't:
-Don't talk to seniors.. they most likely DON'T like you. The won't give you any respect.
-Don't wear revealing clothing- seniors will automatically hate you.

All in all- if you just be yourself- you'll be fine. If you have upperclassmen in any classes- you'll get to know them over the course of the year- and you may end up meeting some really great people. I know that some of my best friends I met at school freshmen year- and most of them were 10th grade or older. Not all seniors hate you- some will be welcoming- but just assume the worst in them, at first. After awhile- you'll know who to avoid and who to warm up to. You'll be fine. Don't worry.

As for the drugs and whatnot, stay away from them. It's not worth it to mess up your life like that. Be smart. People don't normally just approach you and ask you.

The bus is fine. Hopefully you'll turn the age to get your license in your sophomore year, so you won't have to tolerate the bus for all of high school.

As for the bus, don't be afraid. It will be scary at first, for a while, but you'll get used to it. And yeah, people do drugs but you don't have to be one of them. There are WAY better things to do than drugs. Just find the right people and make smart choices; you'll be fine :)

Kids who do drugs will do their drugs. Kids who're older than you don't care for you, and that's pretty much it. You're there to learn, not for people to like you. It's high school.

my school is like that to and so is alot of other schools!the best advice I can give you is to choose your friends wisely! This is extremely important because the last thing you want is to be friends with people that use or sell drugs.I know alot of people who smoke weed and it's easy to get drawn into unless you hang with people who have nothing to do with it!they sort of act as a support system to encourage you to not fall into the drug using crowd.as for the bus ride, jus try to make friends with someone on the bus so you will have someone to sit with and won't ever have to cross paths with the 11th and 12th graders. To be honest, there are some very friendly 11th and 12th graders who won't hate you just because your a freshman.just try to be openminded when you get into highschool.you'll be suprised what friends you'll make and how much they differ in age:)! Hope I helped! Good luck!

Ahh. Don't worry!
You'll be fine. :) Don't listen to everything you hear, because it isn't all bad. The important thing to do is to be yourself of course, but also to be open to all the amazing experiences and friendships that you will make in high school. When I was a 9th grader I met a lot of older kids and last year as a 10th grader I made tons of friends with 9th graders. There's no shame in being the little one because at one point or another we have all been the little ones too. Just be nice to the people you meet and I'm sure you will make a lot of friends and be overall very happy. Also, if you joined some kind of sport, club, or something of the sort, you'll meet a lot more people. I've done drill team and drama and I know that I am happy that I joined both. I'll be in 11th grade next year :/. I hope I'm not that scary to anyone. Haha. That would be bad. Anyways, you should be super excited! High school is great, lol. :)

I'm sure 95% of the people that read this know the exact feeling. Most people feel like that when they're going into high school. It's a new experience with new people, so it's understandable to have apprehensions.

First of all, with the drugs, there may be drugs at your school, but you don't have to take them. No one is going to try to get you to take their drugs. The only way the drugs will be part of your life in any way is if you take money, find the people with the drugs, and buy drugs off of them. There were drugs at my high school, but trust me, no one's standing in the hallways snorting coke and waving joints around. If there are drugs in your school at all, it will be extremely extremely hushhush, to the point where you won't even know it's going on unless you're hanging around the people selling/buying them. The staff stays on top of things like that, having drug dogs raid the school and sniff lockers and stuff like that (at least at my school they did). I never saw any drugs at school, but I know a couple of people got busted for having them. They virtually had no effect on me or anyone I was around, because we didn't do them.

As far as the 11th and 12th graders go, trust me, they'll leave you be. Especially the seniors, who aren't really how they portray them in movies. They're minds are focused on graduating. They aren't even in the mindset to mess with freshmen (usually), because they're 17-18 years old and are typically more mature than that.

You think that being new is a bad thing, but really, it isn't. You have a totally fresh slate with everyone at the school. The only freshmen I ever knew to get picked on, got picked on because of issues with things they did while they were still in junior high. Usually it involved messing around with a high school girl's boyfriend. Then, when they get into high school, they're picked on a little bit. But, again, staff stays on top of things like this usually.

As everyone is saying, they're not going to care about you. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing to you. The only way it could be bad is if you really want to hang out with the juniors and seniors for some reason. Everyone has their own group of friends, and unless you do something you shouldn't do (like mess with someone's bf), you'll totally be in the clear.

Over the summer, try to make friends with people around your age so you'll already have a group of friends when you get into high school. It's really not as big of a deal as it seems. People just go to class, go to lunch, then go home. There's a lot of drama, but it's fairly easy to avoid. The juniors and seniors may be older than you, but they have zero authority over the school and the things that happen there.
