I'm looking to make some extra money and I have noticed that there are lots of toddlers in my neighborhood. I am going to take a babysitting class where I learn the heimlich maneuver, etc.
Other information:
I am in 10th grade. (Straight A student!..but that probably doesnt help)
16 years old and a girl.
We live in a middle class neighborhood
How much should I charge? I was thinking 8 dollars per hour, + 2 dollars per hour with any amount of friends over. Is that too much?
free2sing09 answered Tuesday July 14 2009, 11:06 am: It is very smart of you to take babysitting classes prior to babysitting. After taking first aid and CPR classes next weeek, I am thinking of charging $5 for one child and $2 for any brother or sister (this is all based per hour). With the $8 plus $2, that price is a little steep. If the parents are gone for 4 hours, I think paying $40 is outragous. [ free2sing09's advice column | Ask free2sing09 A Question ]

(5 children = $10 for the first two and $6 extra for the other three) It keeps it cheap but not so cheap your not making any money. It also depends on the age of the child. If your going to be cooking and cleaning while there, charge an extra $1 or $2 an hour for the extra work involved. Children that are almost capable of taking care of themselves (around 10-13 years old) charge a little less since there is less involved. I never charged if there were friends over since the friends are usually making your job a little easier by doing the entertaining for you. As for mine, I haven't ever babysat, but I think a good price would be $10 per hour for two kids, and $8 for one kid, like the first and second person kind of said.
I've never heard of anyone having friends over when they were being babysat, but you could probably negotiate the prices for that.
The younger the age, the more you should charge. Like, if you have to change diapers and stuff, then, charge maybe $11 for one kid and $13 for two?
If you really just have to occupy their time and keep them out of trouble, then $9 or $10 sounds reasonable.
Make fliers! That's the best way to advertise. Everyone gets mail and everyone looks at their mailbox. Just don't put it IN the mailbox. Because, at least in Michigan, it's illegal.
Vivienne answered Sunday April 12 2009, 10:14 am: you should charge an 10$/hr rate for 2 kids, 8$/hr for one, if they have friends over, tell the parent that you charge extra, so the parents of the friend can pay you the added amount [ Vivienne's advice column | Ask Vivienne A Question ]
