Hi i just turned 16 and i want a summer job.. I attend school and i should be getting out around june. I would like a job during the summer time.
should i start applying now or should i wait a little longer.
and what are some tips so i can get noticed by the people who are hiring and should i still ask for a application even if they do not have a "now hiring" sign out.. please help this is my first job. Please just give me some tips.
thank you ever so much:)
If it's a retail store, I think it helps if you apply at places you like & feel comfortable in. If the environment makes makes you feel weird or un-welcome, then obviously you shouldn't apply there. Also, apply at places that sell things you're interested in. If you like reading, work at a bookstore. If you like clothes (who doesn't?), work at a store in the mall & if you like music, work at a record store. Or you can work at a grocery store because everyone likes food & air conditioning!
If they don't have a Now Hiring sign out, don't let it discourage you. Apply anyways because it shows that you're determined & they like it. List that you're available for Seasonal & Part Time since you aren't old enough to work Full Time yet. And if they call you for an interview, dress in nice clothing. You can ask what they prefer because sometimes they prefer casual, but some places like it if you were a nice outfit or something. Also, just be really nice & friendly. If you give off a bad attitude or you seem rude, they probably won't like you.
And don't apply on weekends because they more than likely won't even consider you. Also, if you have facial piercings (lip, eyebrow, monroe) be careful where you apply because most places are really picky about stuff like that & want professional looking people. But places like Hot Topic, Journey's, Zumies & Pac Sun don't usually care because it's in the "culture" of the styles they're promoting. I'm sure if you have your nose pierced, they won't mind so don't worry too much about that. [ christina's advice column | Ask christina A Question ]

If you go in for an interview dress really nice, act like yourself, and BE ON TIME! Yes you should ask for an application because a lot of people put your application on "hold" and they hold it until they need someone else and then you may be one of the first ones they call (so you beat all the other people that didnt think of that) hope i helped and good luck! =] [ Sami143's advice column | Ask Sami143 A Question ]

If you want to work at a local grocery, or fast food place you can put it off until around exam review time.I have learned this from expirence. These places are always hiring. I know for instance I work for Couche-Tard a large convience store chain in Canada I applied 2 weeks before school ended and I started the moment I finished my last exam.
However if you want something a little better(electronics stores, good resturants, national/state/provincial parks, or any seasonal work) apply NO LATER THAN MID-APRIL!!!!!!!!
They often look for students, teachers and retirees. These jobs are hard to come by in may or june.
Also most places will just take a resume, or if they need an application it should be online in todays age(all the jobs I have applied for have been so far)
Remember if you have no previous expirence just make sure any extracirriculars are there. They will be impressed with the more you give them. I know the fact that I am bilingual and that I am involved with Junior Achievement got me my first job.

You could wait a bit longer before applying - I'd say no later than mid April... make sure you apply by Easter time because college kids finish school in May and will come home to snatch up all of the summer positions before high schoolers even get out for summer.
I'll be home from college May 6th and already have a summer job lined up for myself when I get home. A lot of my friends already have their summer jobs as well. If you want an almost guaranteed position, why don't you look for positions with summer camps. Those are the places that definitely need help, especially during the summer.

Adults will lose their job, so the smart adults will take any job they can get, like at a fast food restaurant or Wal*Mart. And those are jobs most teens get. Apply immediately and work and do whatever they ask at work. [ onebirddog2000's advice column | Ask onebirddog2000 A Question ]
