I want a small indoor dog who can get along with my cat, is preferably easy to groom, doesn’t bark like crazy without good reason, and is affectionate. There are no children in my home which is in a rural area, I’d love taking him/her on a walk with a leash, but the dog also needs to be able to entertain itself for about 9 hours while I’m gone at work on weekdays. If anyone can give me breed suggestions, tips, or any other info, that would be great! I’m considering an Australian Terrier.

Before you get a dog, see if you could get someone to dog-sit during the day, or at least drop by and walk it. If you insist on getting a dog, get an adult--house breaking will be a nightmare with you gone for nine hours a day. Visit with a rescue that fosters. My area has a rescue specifically for small dogs. Since fosters live in homes, the foster parents can recommend a dog that will be a good fit. Many foster parents become very attached to their charges, so you will probably have to show that you are willing to work to keep the dog happy. I would not look for a specific breed. All of the other breeds mentioned have associated health concerns, and not every dog of the same breed is the same. Instead, look for someone fostering a dog that feels confident the dog will be successful in your home. Good luck! [ TanDancer's advice column | Ask TanDancer A Question ]
walkingthewalk593 answered Tuesday December 9 2008, 11:24 pm: I have a yorkshire terrier who gets along great with my cat and if you get them cut short they are easy to groom. He doesn't bark unless someone is at the door, and occasionally when I vacuum. You might also try a pomeranian, I have had two but they have been drastically different. My first is very affectionate, sweet, doesn't chase the cat, and hardly ever needs to be groomed cause he is so naturally fluffy and doesn't get matted. He has a really shrill bark as most poms do but only when someone new is there. Good on walks. The second one is a little nuttier...and no matter what breed, leaving a new puppy alone for 9 hours is never good. You might try getting a small dog from a shelter that is full grown =) [ walkingthewalk593's advice column | Ask walkingthewalk593 A Question ]

Also I noticed you said easy to groom but i think Shitzu are great dogs but you have to kinda brush them and get them groomed every now and then
AskSydney answered Tuesday November 18 2008, 3:08 pm: Like the person below mentioned, having a dog in the house alone for 9 hours a day during the week isn't the best situation for the dog. It will be starved for affection. However, if you really want to get a dog, you should get two so they can keep each other company during your long absences. As for a specific breed, you should use a dog breed selector ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) and answer the questions to make sure you're getting the right dog for your circumstances. My aunts leaves her dogs for hours and we feed them and care for them then drive home. Aside from that little bit of exercise and chow they're starved for affection and their owner doesn't see that.
If you want a relatively calm dog that seldom barks, is affectionate, and adapts easily pick the Shitzu the person below mentioned or any mix that is crossed with it. I also recommend a Pug as they're very intelligent, fast, seldom bark and enjoy being cuddled and held like a baby.
They're big sucks and will milk this and their size for all it's worth. A pug-shitzu mix is what we have and I adore him. They imprint on a person very fast and are tremendously loyal to that individual and won't want to be separated from that person for long.
I find that they don't like traveling or at least this one does very well at all. Mine gets sick every time. But that shouldn't be a deterrent. It sounds as though you need a cat not a dog. The cat can tolerate your 9 hour absences a lot easier than a pup can. Just a thought! [ solidadvice4teens's advice column | Ask solidadvice4teens A Question ]
