argumentation paper.

Question Posted Tuesday April 15 2008, 11:07 pm

ok, im doing an argumentative [pro vs. con] paper for my AP class, and my topic is plastic surgery and basically the effects/should it be used to cosmetic reasons or just for medical disability? i'm pretty unclear on where i myself stand on the issue and i'd just like some more opinions.. do you think it should be an option for those who just want to "look better", or no, and why ?

For the most part, I'm all for plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons. If there's something about your appearance that really bothers you, and you can change it, why not do it?

Some people are extremely self-conscious about certain "flaws" in their appearance (say, a large crooked nose). And a severe lack of confidence in your appearance can affect your social life and even your ability to succeed at school or work. If a simple procedure can correct the "problem" and make you feel good about yourself, it almost seems silly NOT to do it.

As long as it's done safely by a professional, what's wrong with it? And how is it any different from the other things we do to improve our appearance... such as wearing braces, whitening our teeth, coloring our hair, or even wearing makeup? These are all things that alter the way we naturally look... but nobody says "You shouldn't get braces; you should learn to be happy with the teeth you were born with." Or "Don't wear mascara, accept your eyelashes the way they are." I suppose nobody objects to those things because they're "safe." But as I said, if plastic surgery is done by a qualifed professional, there are very few risks... so there really isn't much difference!

In my opinion, I think it should be used for both cosmetic AND reconstructive surgery. It's a person's own choice and free right what they choose to do with themselves, and it only affects that person. Like for example, if I got a boob job, it wouldn't directly affect you, right?

Anyways, think of how many jobs would be lost if they removed cosmetic surgery. That's removing an entire profession. I still think it's a respectable profession because they are still doctors and study the same thing as other doctors. They're still surgeons in the end, but the only difference is that they don't deal with life-or-death situations. Like they don't have to save someone's life, just enhance it.

well think of it this way maybe... having somethign you really hate on you... you start to hate yourself.. you jsut cant be happy. your depressed (medical issue), stressed, and jsut generally unhappy... they should get a surgery for that. they shouldnt jsut have to take tons of medication for depression just because of soemthing they dont find as "normal" or "acceptable" on their body. but... as for my opinion. i dont like the whole i want bigger boobs bigger lips get roid of my wrinkles get rid of this hair line re do my ears re do my nose. iv seen people be practically addicted to it. so i would never ever do it. but its their own lives i guess and although id try help them question wheither they really want to do it... i would not be surpised if they would. (because im stubbron as heck and if someone told me no i might do it just because i want to prove them wrong)... so theres my opinion hope that helps a bit

People can do what they want. Doctors shouldn't be forced to perform plastic surgery, insurance companies shouldn't be forced to pay for it, and patients shouldn't be forced to do it or not do it.

I'm not a huge fan of plastic surgery myself.

I think the only reasons it should be used, are for people who don't look, erm, right (for lack of better wording) for reasons beyond control.
Example: Say somebody was in a car accident and broke their nose or something. I think that should be the only use of plastic surgery.

Other than that, people are just too insecure with what was given to them, and feel the need to "fix" it.

But that's just my opinion.

I believe it's all on how the person wants to be viewed. I go with the notion that if they are trying to look better, they must be lacking when it comes to personality and need to attract people with their appearance because they have nothing else to offer.
