I work out in the afternoon/evening.
Is it better to eat my big meal before or after working out?
Like or should I have a snack before or what?
Thanks!

As you know, you should not eat too much before, and if you do have a big meal, wait enough for it to digest. Another important thing to remember is to drink enough water before, during and afterwards- enough to keep yourself hydrated and prevent dehydration.
Before you work out, try having a healthy snack- if you eat something heavy or greasy it will make you feel lethargic and crappy. Try having something that might give you more energy and keep you feeling healthy, like some fruit, granola bar, smoothie, etc. Afterwards, you will probably feel very hungry, so have a nice, healthy and hearty meal to replenish yourself. That's one thing I like about working out- you always feel very hungry afterwards, so eating is always a pleasure. All in all, eat healthy foods that are rich in fiber and protein, and make sure to drink enough water. [ ciao77's advice column | Ask ciao77 A Question ]
Anonym answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 10:14 pm: What I've always been told is that you're supposed to have 'enough food in you to go through the workout the best you can' and then eat healthily afterwords. I always ate a powerbar or two, or granola bar, before hand, something small. Then afterwords eat protein (if you're looking to build muscle that is), if that's not what you're trying for, just eat normally, if you eat more before you work out you're usually a lot less hungry afterwords so you don't over eat and it's said to burn off more calories for weight loss. christian_grg answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 5:47 pm: Both. But lightly BEFORE. Especially if you are doing cardio. You'll want to have some complex carbs, maybe a piece of whole wheat toast, before you run, swim, or bike. Then after, have a good amount of protein and carbs.
If you are strength training, you really need to have a whey protein shake (mixed with water is best) so that you have the necessary protein in your system to get you through the workout. After the workout, have another protein shake, or protein source...chicken, fish, eggs, etc. Your muscles will need the protein to rebuild the muscle tissue that breaks down during a workout. orphans answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 5:13 pm: i would think eating before excercise would be better, so you can get the energy you need. Then you can use that energy for excercise, and then the cycle goes on. Try to eat something with carb's in it, so you get slow release energy [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
erinbrbo answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 5:06 pm: If you eat before you workout, then you just burn calories from the meal you ate. if you dont eat your burn fat. so it would be better to eat the bigger meal after you workout. hope i helped (: [ erinbrbo's advice column | Ask erinbrbo A Question ]
