I REALLY NEED HELP! i have a 6 week old puppy, he is a lab/pit bull. he was crated when he was with his mom and brothers. but now that hes crated here even if hes falling over tired he still cries! he wont stop. all night long. non stop.. we have to put him in the basement where we cant hear him but i feel so bad!!! even in my room if the door is shut he starts yelping. i know the crying is just cause hes out of what hes intouch with but everything people have said to do does NOT work. even if i lay down with him and my fingers inthe crate singing or talkign to him he SCREAMSSSSS and i cant take it. i start to cry. if anybody has ANY tips pleaseee help me.
*a vet told me not to put any hot water bottles, school clocks, blankets, or toys unless they are kongs. they choke on toys and blankets, pop the water bottle, pee on the toys and blankets. it makes a mess... so i cant put anything int here!! i put his stuffed animals outside looking in thinking that would help. it didnt.
*I take his water and food up about 2 hours before being crated and i take him to go to the bathroom and run him around alittle bit untill he gets SUPER tired and is falling over. (he still wakes up when he is put in there and starts howling)
any tips, stories, anythiiinnngg!!! just please help me! thanks sooo much in advance.
Additional info, added Tuesday February 26 2008, 8:29 pm:
I have been told by various vets that i had called before getting him, about if crating him is a good idea. they said for a large dog.. like a lab who will chew your house down, that it is the ONLY way till he is old enough to not chew on anything but his toys and till he is house trained. and belive me we got the biggest crate we could find. we got the giant one. so he has lots room for when hes older. so if you want to tell me i shouldnt crate him i dont care, im asking tips on crating him so that he is okay.

And you should NEVER crate dogs unless its for sleep. You wouldnt want to be shut in a box all day would you?
Labradors are EXTREMELY sociable and not to mention energetic. You need to take him for a long walk before bed, so as to tire him out, then place into his crate to sleep, then in the morning take him out again, but dont re-crate him. Its just not fair.
You should never have an animal if you dont have the time for it.
The best thing to do, is tire him before bed with a long walk, and use it only for night time sleep.
bethloveswife answered Wednesday February 27 2008, 11:00 pm: i know you dont want to hear about the not keeping the puppy in the crate, but i've got to say it. crates are for when you're leaving the house, or bed time. crates are also a puppy/dog's safe place. i have a red doberman mixed with a blue heeler. she's 3 now but she still gets into everything. at such a young age, your puppy needs more and more interaction with you. and crates are only supposed to be big enough for the animal inside to turn around. too much room and they take advantage, not enough room and they're uncomfortable. puppies need attention. and labs are extremely social. thus needing that much more interaction. Anonym answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 10:57 pm: I'm no expert, but I'd say to put in a doggy bed, something that he couldn't chew up and choke on you know? Put some of his toys in there, and make it as warm as possible. Also, I know when we first got our puppies that to put them to sleep easier we would heat up warm milk and put it in a bowl and give it to them during or before they go outside to play, so it has time to set in and relax them. And this sounds completely ridiculous, but for my chihuahua it worked. We got a second chihuahua and crated them together and he stopped yelping all together. I did not say that you were torturing him or using it as punishment, I was just advising you not to. I'm just saying I know when I was a child I used to sit out of my dogs crate and do that, but now I've learned that it only makes it worse. I hope whatever you tries works, Good Luck!

What the columnists below me said were smart.
Large puppies like that are not meant to me crate trained, they gear that more towards smaller dogs, because lets face it bigger dogs need to sprawl out and run. They have a lot of energy and need/want to use it.
You could try facing him to the door/wall, and/or put the sheet over the crate. Don't just sit out of his crate and pet his threw there or put his toy outside the crate, they teases him! It's actually pretty cruel, because if you have the ability and time to sit out there and watch him, then why don't you take him out?!
I know this sounds weird but we bought a playpen for dogs for my little teacup yorkie, it's less restricted. It may not work for your puppy because he's bigger but it might. Try www.divapups.com -Or you could get a real baby playpen, although when they become bigger they may knock it over and it will fall.
Like the coloumnist below me said, each day put him in there for more and more time, but don't use it as torture or disipline.
But please, if you are going to keep him in there and not let him be free and run, get rid of him, to a nice loving family.
*Crate training is used only in night, when it is time for the dog to go to sleep.*
SDC answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 7:22 pm: my two puppies did the exact same thing!!!what we did was place a sheet over the crate.my dad says the only reason they do it is because they can see you and if you put a sheet over the cage he wont see you and he will probably go to sleep.we also put them in the cage for a certain amount of time everyday.like mon. we would put them in their for about 10 to 15 min. then let them out and each day keep them in their for a little longer.that way they will start to get a little more use to it.trust me the more time he spends in their the less he will wine!!!and dont forget the sheets!!!hope this helped and good luck!!! soccerchipmunk answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 4:49 pm: my grandma just bought a yorkie puppy who is 3 months old.she got a crate and put her in there everyday for 2 weeks and left her in a back bedroom and the puppy started doing the same thing yours is.
just start letting the puppy out when you are home for awhile .make sure that you dont use the crate as a punishment place.doing that will make the puppy not want to be in there.
also you could place the crate somewhere in your house were there will be people.dogs, cats, pets of any kind will feel alone if he/she is not around you and your family while he is in the crate.
cookie8888 answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 4:44 pm: Dogs don't belong in crates. Call me old-fashioned, but if you don't have the tine to spend with your puppy and train him, you need to find someone who does. It's not fair. Puppies take time and care and they need to be with people. Please don't cage him up and expect him to be happy--you already know how that doesn't work. KisaKiss19 answered Tuesday February 26 2008, 11:32 am: you have to make him feel like his crate is a good place. bring him back upstairs,
everytime he goes in his crate, give him a treat.
do this everytime, and he wont be so sad. and it'll be easier then dragging him in there.
also, (once you bring him up from the basement) only let him stay in one room (my puppy stays in the kitchen, you could get gates. but we just use big boxes, haha.) and buy one of those doggy-beds. put it in a corner of the room, where ever really, but i think corners are best. that'll be "his area". so when he's bad, he'll probably go in the corner.
(it can also be the place where his toys and treats are.)
he might need a bigger crate, even if he's small.
besides, they grow really fast! trust mee, my dog went though 3 crates already-and he's only 7 months!
i'd keep him out (in that one room) during the day. like, right when you get home from school let him out. i doubt he likes to be in the crate all the time!
so i hope i helped. and if you need anything else just drop it in the inbox
good luck!
