I have a local GNC near my school and i was wondering what one would recomend for a highschool football player in the sense of protien shakes. I was thinking cell-tech but after some research and seeing the price i decided to forget that idea. I don't want any creatine or drugs, i want something with protien, vitamins, and that works. any ideas?
Remember, shakes are only for when you need quick protein/can't eat a real meal so don't get too caught up on drinking them and thinking they can replace regular food.
Cell-Tech isn't a protein supplement, it's a creatine supplement. MuscleTech's main protein supplement is Nitro-Tech. However, there is a saying in bodybuilding of "Friends don't let friends use MuscleTech" All their stuff is garbage. [ MikeCFT's advice column | Ask MikeCFT A Question ]

First off you have whey shakes. These come in different degrees of purity usually denoted as a percentage. Whey concentrates range from about 60- 80%, and whey isolates are above 80%. Whey is an excellent protein source with a very high biological value and, amongst other things, the highest proportion of branched chain amino acids. It has proven effects and a rapid absorption rate.
The best kinds of whey are either ion exchange or cross flow micro filtered whey isolates.
One also can get casein and egg protein shakes. Both have slower absorption times than whey (particularly casein). These are ideal to take before bed, so the body has something to use to build muscle throughout the night.
Also for all of these a good glutamine content is very good. Glutamine is an amino acid which we require very large amounts of, particularly when one is in training.
In regards to brands check out stuff from Prolab and/ or Optimum Nutrition. There is also something called Designer Protein which comes with vitamins.
Personally I prefer a high grade of whey for after training, and then I take my vitamins separately. If you dont want to invest in different shakes, you can cut some corners and use whey in water after training, and whey in skim milk before bed (to slow down the absorption rate).

When I first started lifting this is what I purchased, and I still use it to this date more than two years later. Each serving is loaded with balanced amounts of essential amino acids, giving it 24 grams of unadulturated whey protein. It is a very top quality product, and with that being said it doesn't run cheap though. They sell two pound containers which are around $30-$40 dollars each, and five pound cases which run about $65-$70 dollars. The five-pounder has 77 servings though, and will be worth your extra money if you are serious about building muscle. The two pound cases provide 28 servings, so you are getting more for your money with the five-pounder. Although I don't really buy it for this reason, Optimum Nutrition however has some pretty good tasting shakes. They have a good consistancy and aren't chalky, and generally mix really well in water or Nonfat milk (I'm sure they mix well in 2% and Whole milk as well, but I wouldn't suggest drinking it with that because of the high saturated fat it contains. Nonfat milk still contains the protein that its counterparts of 2% and Whole milk do, without the saturated fat) GNC also carries a GNC Pro Performance brand called Mass XXX, which i'm pretty sure will still run you the same price. I'm pretty sure that I can safely say I won't use much other than Optimum Nutrition when it comes to whey protein. It has many added benifits to it also, such as HYDROWHEY, which makes the protein faster acting once you take it. My advice to you is to go to the GNC near your school, and just browse around for a bit. Try to find what will benifit you the most out of your training regime. Best of luck to your lifting man and I hope you find the right protein for yourself! [ ThEDaRkEsTSiDe's advice column | Ask ThEDaRkEsTSiDe A Question ]
