Truthfully, I think you have to damage it some-- this doesn't mean frying your hair. No, what you should do is blow-dry your hair (assuming you don't already)... use the curling iron even to just straighten your hair... cut your hair to a style that makes your hair seem thicker, with layers. Around shoulder length or perhaps a bit longer.
Shampoo and condition (preferably higher-quality volumizing types) every day. Towel dry, then use a bit of mousse... blow dry, and while blow drying, brush out from the roots. Flip your hair upside down and brush. Then, you can spritz some hairspray through your hair. Toss your hair.
Tell me how it works. :)

But for only the sake of having "silky, limp, volumeless" hair, simply -- no. This can totally be fixed by products. I recommend John Frieda's Frizzease, they have wonderful products. If you want specifics, send me an inbox question and I'll be happy to help. =) [ LagunaBabe's advice column | Ask LagunaBabe A Question ]

Personally, I would not wear a wig, but simply keep it shaven...a lot of people may think that's bold, and think that you're very cool for doing it. Or they could not, it really depends on which people we're talking about. But you shouldn't care what they think, it's for you, so if you want to wear a wig go ahead. Somebody else suggested using different hair products, which is also great. I got Sunsilk's Hairapy (the anti-poof kind, since that's what I need) and it worked really well, so if they have one for volume, I recommend that. A lot of other brands have different shampoos for different kinds of hair, so look at all of them. [ thefish's advice column | Ask thefish A Question ]

There's SO many volumising products on the market including shampoos/conditioner/creams etc. Go out and look at them - see which is best for your hair type. They aren't expensive.
Also, try blow dying your hair from the roots and use a barrel brush to make it look less limp. You can also back comb your hair at the roots. Not alot - just enough to give it oomph. Then fix it into place with hair spray.
It could be worth getting your hair cut specifically to give the illusion of bigger hair. Ask your stylist to do it and to add textures.
Have a little look here to see if there are other tips for you
